The Official Lair Thread - Update with Analog Control + DLC on April 15

4.9. Ouch.
That's a big ouch.

The number 1 complaint they have is that the controls suck hard. HARD!

But then look at this IGN preview for it....

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/801/801928p1.html

Lair is surprisingly easy to pick up and play, and piloting your dragon in the heat of a battle - with swarms of enemies bombarding you from every angle - becomes simple with practice. They're responsive too, and moves such as the quick 180-degree turn, executed by jolting the pad up, means that dogfighting soon becomes second nature."
Hmm. Looks like I'm cancelling my order tomorrow. Now, what to put that credit on?
Reviews are way all over the place for this one.

Gonna wait until it's cheaper now.
There's plenty games to choose from anyhow.
I expect impressions within the hour!
Ok, I just played a few levels and I hate to say it, but I'm kind of in agreement with IGN. Now I think the score is a bit too low, but all his complaints are spot on.

The targeting SUCKS! I can't emphasize it enough. One of the levels I had to take out some catapults, and there were enemy dragons flying around. Problem was I could not lock onto the damn things. I kept locking onto the dragons, and everytime I did the camera would whip around disorienting me.

The dragon fighting is fairly lame. Most of the time you have to line yourself up with the sixaxis, then ram into the side of the enemy dragon. It looks really stupid. The takedowns do look cool, but they're too short. It's more fun strafing ships than it is fighting dragons. Kind of sad...

Damn shame too since everything else is so good. The non-fighting controls are great. It's easy to steer the dragon, and do all your aerial meanuvears. The game looks great, and the voice acting is excellent. Sucks because the game isn't even a good showpiece since the dragon fights look so damn lame.

I signed it out at work. I'll play it some more tomorrow, but if my opinion stays the same (and it probably will since I doubt the game mechanics will magically change overnight) I'm going to be switching my preorder money to something else... *sigh*

That IGN review is pretty bad, but I'm still getting it. They could give it a -10 and I'd still get it (well...maybe not).

I've just built up too much hype for myself that I have to get it.

It can't be THAT bad...right?

Kinda wonder why they delayed it then :/

What were they fixing?...:whistle2:k

Rei's summation sealed it. I'm going to aim for Heavenly Sword and Eye of Judgment. Between those two games and GHIII, my PS3 will be busy for a while, even without Lair.

It's like the PS3 got its own "Lost Planet" (big hype, bigger letdown) earlier in its life cycle than the 360.

Save us Uncharted!!

Uncharted will be awesome.

Now I'm second guessing on if I should grab the game tomorrow. I'll head on over to Gamefaqs. I'm sure they're saying IGN is wrong and stuff. That'll make me feel better

Was Lost Planet really that bad? I played a demo of it on the PC and thought it was awesome

Guess I'll rent this game and see what all the commotion is about myself. Even when I hear bad things about a game, I can't make an official judgement call without playing it myself

Yeah, unlike this game I actually liked Lost Planet.

What hurts the most is it's so close to being good. Tighten up that targeting, make those fights more brutal, and you'd have had a winner.

Thanks for the honest opinion, Rei. Always good to hear what a fellow CAG thinks about a game. Also glad I didn't pre-order this, as I had a wary feeling once they delayed it.

I'm glad you posted that... I don't understand how the game went from being east to pick up and play to having horrible controls?
I'm glad you posted that... I don't understand how the game went from being east to pick up and play to having horrible controls?
Two completely different people... if Greg had done the preview, I'd certainly have more questions.. but he didn't.

Ok, I was a little weary on still getting it tomorrow but I decided I will still give it a shot.

Worst thing happens is I get it, hate it and then throw it on ebay.

So the problems are with the motion-controls and lock-on system, I can manage to get through that.

The visuals are to die for though :D

whew, slammed everywhere. guess I'll pass this up.

what a relief...considering today was a huge release day.

General impressions on GAF are that it's not as bad as the press is making out ot be. Generally positive comments.

I'm still getting the game, but not until after the holidays.

I just finished the Bridge level ("Crossing at Dawn") that the IGN review complained about on my first try. Not only that, but I really enjoyed it and it kept me on the edge of my seat!

Honestly I'm not having any trouble with the lock on at all. Get the target in front of you, press lock on. The cutscenes show you what your next target is so it's just a matter of getting the target in front of you and after that it's easy!

Maybe the reviewers are missing the tutorial? After you complete the Prologue mission it opens up "Darklands Traning" and there are 10 or so training exercises. After the combat tutorial you figure out that some dragons only take one fire blast to take out, while others will need some bumping or dragon fighting. It also teaches you about "rage mode" which is how you get to the Takedowns.

I found it helped alot to read the manual before I started playing - the Carnage chain system isn't really explained within the game itself but it basically shows you how you can take out groups of Dragons all at once without having to keep circling around after taking out one.

So far the only complaint I have is the sloppy transitions into cutscenes. I've been waiting a long time to play something other than an FPS or racing game, and this is doing the job just fine.

Ok...played the first hour.....I'm at like the 5th stage or something..you're basically defending a bridge.

First things first...take that 4.9 IGN gave it and throw it out the window........secondly.....take the 9 it got from Play was it?....and throw that out the window.

After reading BSV mini review......I can honestly say...I agree a lot with him...but couldn't disagree more with others.

First things first...the graphics......most of it...damn right AWESOME!. When flying over the city everything looks amazing and truly feels like something out of LOTR. However other aspects just look ugly...ie shadows...they have a flicker to them that looks ridiculous...and some things look like they weren't AA at all.....but the biggest flaw is like BSV said....the framerate. it's not even 30fps...infact I swear at times it drops to the low teens.....but this seemed to only happen when fighting on the ground....while it the air.....I'd say it's around 20-25....game is definitly not smooth.....but overall..the graphics will please.

Storyline....yeah.....I'm with BSV.....they may aswell have not had one..well IMO so far...it jumps right in and you have no idea whats happening....and it seems it jumps from one thing to another.

Which brings me to gameplay.......it does the same thing....jumps from one thing to another.

Now I don't mind levels where you go from objective to objective......but not after like 10 seconds. you'll hear you general say..."Ok now take out those dragons"......and after you take out like 5...and seem to get in a rythmn......he then says "ok now take out those catapults"......and it also seems like every couple minutes there is an in game cutscene that interupts everything......so it always feels like you play for 2 min..watch 10 second cutscene...play for 3 min..repeat....I'm hoping this changes later.....not to mention that it's hard to tell exactly what to do....ie...on the level I stopped playing at.....you need to take some girl to a ledge)a in game cutscene shows this ledge) however.....this ledge is located on the bridge which is being atacked......so I fly down to the bridge(as i thought that was my objective)....but I can't land for some reason......and I start spraying fire everywhere...burning up red dudes......and then I get to to a certain point on the bridge and all of a sudden....in game cutscene...I drop this girl off onto the ledge......the dragon was holding this girl but you can't see her because of the camera angle.....oh and get this.....not only was I not doing the correct objective......those quards i was frying?..yup..good guys!!.....lol....but that could just as much be my error.

Ok...now controls...i REALLY like the flying controls..I don't know what BSV is talking about.....the only delay is when you're doing the quick evasive maneuvers like the 180..or the dash...actually just flying the dragon feels awesome....BUT...targeting is a bitch.....it autoaims for the most part..but locking on and trying to get in close for the kill can be a pain as you' can end up targeting a totally different target than you wanted..resulting in some crazy disorientation...not to mention the general guy will be like.."ok attack the ise dragon"...I take a coupple out..."ok now the guardian dragons".....ok the back to the rhinos on the bridge......and all of these things have different weaknesses that you need to remember from a BRIEF tutorial in which it tells you once how to do things(yes..I'l be busting out the manual)

And another complaint a lot of mags and sites had was the ground combat.....they complain about the camera....I've had ZERO camera issues so far...as you control it manually....the only complaint about the ground combat is that the frame rate drops a shitton when you start attacking a bunch of dudes.

I know most of this sounds bad..but really my number one complaint is pacing..as the game always seems to pull you out of the rythmn right wehn you're getting into it...with a dumb in game scene....and that the general is constantly changing objectives every 3 min or so...I mean..fuck dude....let me do whatever....which would add so much more since the battles are HUGE and there is so much going on......not being able to choose when you take out what, kind of takes you out of the moment(well you can do whatever you want...and ignore the general..but you'll likely fail the mission.

So again..a lot of this seems negative...but I'll say this...not one moment out of that hour was I bored. All i could think was....this shit is awesome....I'm flying a fucking dragon!!!! I'm setting things on fire....swating away dozens of soldiers at a time....eating them when i need health......raping other dragon riders on their own dragon(which i stil have no clue how I did that) I'm just going to say it.....so far the game is down right fun! Now this could change if the missions repeat themselves over and over again......and like BSV it'd be nice to be able to fly to different locations and be able to take in the whole city..instwad of jumping on your dragon and having some douche tell me what to do...lol.

So...final verdict on the first hour(I'll write a full review when I'm done the game) It made me realize how much better this game could have been if Factor 5 left out the Rogue Squadren mold and made the game more open world.
The story line isn't going to be anything special..and it's told terribly.........the gameplay jumps all over the place.......the graphics are both freakinf gorgeous and ugly at the same time......but holy shit has this game been fun so far....and I didn't want to stop..but I need to sleep.

Last words for the post(fuck this is long).....DEFINITLY not a 4.9(I can tell IGN focused too much on the technical flaws and concentrted too much on fussy control quirks and bad targeting system and let that get in the way of having fun) but it's not a 8 or 9 either. In the end......you still get that "Holy shit I'm flying a dragon and tearing shit up feeling....and that should be al that matters. Give it a rent if you'e not big on dragons.....but if you like dragons and that medievil flare.....i'd even go as far as say, buy this game....and don't let the technical shit bother you.

I went in to pick up the game at Gamestop with my preorder but decided not to and instead just switch my preorder over to SKATE, all these reviews are making me wary of the game. I'll wait for a price drop or demo first before I even try this game.
So the problems are with the motion-controls and lock-on system, I can manage to get through that.
I think I can too, and that seems to be the big problem with this game.

Cancelled my preorder (put the money towards NHL 08 for 360) and am going to pick this one up when it drops in price.

Chalk this up as my major gaming disappointment of the year. Still have 0 PS3 games for my PS3 :(
It's like the PS3 got its own "Lost Planet" (big hype, bigger letdown) earlier in its life cycle than the 360.
Uh, no you weirdo. The thing is that Lair was absent at Gamer's Day in May, and Sony made ZERO mention of the game at E3. When Sony seemed to be keeping the game very quiet (other than the Official PS Blog mentioning a few things), that can already tell you they barely cared about the game anymore. It was only hyped through the roof by the media, not Sony themselves (If Sony was hyping it, they would have showed it at E3 along with their other games, but they made zero mention of it).

As for Lair, it will be a like it or hate it game. I never had plans on buying it for a long time, regardless of reviews. Factor 5 is 0/3 with me (Hated one of their N64 Star Wars games, hated Rogue Leader, and hated their last GC Star Wars game). I do want to play a demo because I like the idea of the concept.

Motion controls just aren't for everyone. I expect Folklore will get slammed by a few reviewers because of the controls. However, I played the demo and think it's one of the best next gen demos, so I'll be buying it.

Every now and then IGN gives a bad game and 8+, but it's pretty rare for them to pan a good game. Some people are citing God Hand, but that's one game ever as opposed to hundreds of games they've rated too high: Prey (9), Jade Empire (9.9), MX vs ATV Unleashed (9.3), ...
It's like the PS3 got its own "Lost Planet" (big hype, bigger letdown) earlier in its life cycle than the 360.
Lost Planet is sweet, 99 Nights is a better comparison.

I'll be grabbing the game in a few hours after class.

And Heavenly Sword has been getting pretty good reviews. Lowest I've seen so far is the 7 from IGN.

even if it gets good or decent reviews the IGN review said it was only like 6 hours long. I don't know if I can spend $60 for that. I really want more PS3 games, but Sony has been slacking. All the multi-console games are usually better on 360 which has been hurting my PS3 gaming collection. Hopefully Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank will help out the PS3 this fall. Sorry if this is off topic, but I don't feel like making another topic, but isn't Socom 4 coming out this year also?
IGN gave in like a 4.5 something out of 10

But both gameinformer and gamespot gave its 8/10

Someone buy it and atell me what they think
Cool about the GI review. Most of the time I agree with them since they actual write reviews that are more than 3 sentences long and explain what is good/bad with the game.

Then again, I also trusted IGN sometimes and they gave it a 4.9. I'll decide for myself what it deserves when I play it later.

Alright, so according to someone on the Playstation Forums, if you use a controller that doesn't support sixaxis (the guy used the logitech one) the game will automatically switch to analog sticks for control.

Then "no" what? You're saying two things here: (1) It wasn't overhyped by Sony, and (2) it was overhyped by the gaming press. Yet, you phrase your post as if you're arguing with me, but my point was about the game being overhyped, and made no mention as to *whom* was doing the overhyping.

If you're going to argue with me, for fuck's sake, make a relevant point, willya?

I mentioned the tidbit from above about using a non SIXAXIS control and GAF went nuts.
They like it much better with the analog sticks. Some guy is playing it with a Saturn pad.

I'll probably grab a non sixaxis controller maybe.

So far I'm not having any trouble with the motion controls. Fun game so far. The music and graphics are top notch.

wha...you can play with just a D-pad?
wha...you can play with just a D-pad?
So far I think Analog sticks, if you have a non sixaxis controller. I might pick up one if it's easier to control without them. So far though from what I have heard it isn't that hard to control the dragon and take out turrents.
Sixaxis control works pretty good so far IMO.

I haven't had any problems yet
Awesome, I might stop off at Walmart and get this and use my credit for some thing else. Since I don't feel like driving all the way out to my Game crazy to get it. This is out everywhere right, or is it only out for pre orders?

I don't think its only for preorders. Someone said they saw it at TRU.

After playing more, I think I'm going to really like this game. Graphics are crazy and all the stuff going on during a level is awesome. Fire flying, other dragon battles going on.

Awesome.

My GC store got only preorders. Odd. We had two people cancel though. I have no idea why they would just send enough for preorders. Maybe they caught wind of the bad reviews and didn't think it would sell.

Probably renting The Darkness and this tonight for labor day weekend. Along with my new Warhawk :D

OT: what else is out there that I could rent...if anythings better then Darkness and Lair?

I was told at my GC that they only got enough copies of Bioshock for preorders as well. That seemed weird to me. Anyway, it might not have anything to do with how well they expect it to sell.
