Just listened to a few of the tracks- it was, as I said, a nice change in pace from the typical club-pop beats and synth voices. Sounds better than the mainstream stuff. That being said, "the best"? Best ever, hell no. Best alive, not a chance. Best currently in the business? Not with the likes of Mos Def, Q-Tip, Del, and Black Thought (The Roots) around. Best in mainstream? He's up there- probably competing with Drake and all those other wannabes for the number 2 or 3 spot (Jigga's got numero uno on lock).
 
Everyone posting in this thread needs to watch the documentary "The Carter"... it will change your opinion of him... good or bad. It's amazing. I bought it after Netflix'ing it.

Every single one of those things is featured prominently in the film, especially his battle with drugs... it's odd, because while he seems addicted to the syrup, and smokes tons of weed, he considers any other hard drug, and surprisingly alcohol, as total off-limits to him. "I might have a glass of champagne now and then if we celebrating, but otherwise, I don't fuck with that shit"... it's a shocking statement after seeing what you see.

Seriously, I can't recommend it enough.

Apparently Wayne didn't even want some of the more revealing parts of that documentary released.

Yup. Basically what ended up happening was, Wayne and his entourage started to slowly realize a lot of the stuff they were doing and saying on camera, you really shouldn't be doing or saying on camera. They got wise to the fact it would show them in a certain light... I really think it was Baby who realized it. He comes off in the movie as almost Suge Knight-ish... you really hate the guy and he barely reveals any of himself.

There's even a part very early on where Wayne's manager/DJ/childhood friend starts a story, then says he doesn't want to talk about the story because it's something that shouldn't be out in the open, and the camera people tell him he's already told them the whole story at a prior date.

At some point they basically barred access all together. Wayne also sued to block the release.

I'm tellin' you guys, a must watch.

It's an amazing doc, checked it out a couple months ago.

The direction was something else, especially where they quote Duffle Bag Boy.

This year has been pretty bad for hip hop in general. Whatever though as it's just been a month and a half. Some good instrumental hip hop out there though like Oddisee's "Traveling Man" and Sourface's "The Anxiety LP". I have heard good things about No Sunlight For The Media's "Raising Hell In Plaid". Either way Lupe Fiasco better drop his album fast cause that is a man who can claim to be the best rapper alive even though he isn 't by a long shot but damn it would sound much better coming from him than this Weezy ass hat.
