The Official PlayStation Vita Thread - 11/4: FW 3.00 Coming Just in Time for the PS4 Launch!

A couple of reasons as to why the not so delayed launch happened:

#1 - Uncharted dilemma. Releasing 2 Uncharted games at once is probably a bad idea.
#2 - Delayed so more titles could be at launch, namely LBP and Wipeout.
#3 - Possible PS3 price cut; this way Sony'll focus on PS3 this holiday with a new price

I'm also wondering what's going to launch with Vita in Japan now due to this delay. It doesn't seem like much could launch with it unless they got a surprise Monster Hunter Tri-X Port, but I highly doubt it. If Sony released Uncharted there first, they're REALLY stupid.

Great points - especially on Uncharted. Being very late to the PSP in the first place, I'm perfectly content with my PSone classics and PSN games for the next several months anyway. I hope Sony and the 3rd parties get aggressive with pricing the classics and current PSN PSP offerings this holiday - a $20 differential between UMD and PSN, such as with Tactics Ogre and The 3rd Birthday, shouldn't be acceptable policy.
Any games confirmed to launch with the system?Maybe Uncharted won't be a launch title?
I think I remember reading on IGN around E3 that Modnation Racers was supposed to be a launch title.

Now that I think about it, I'm not that upset with the Vita not coming out until early next year. I still have almost a dozen PSP RPG's to kill through and I'm looking to invest alot of time into BF3. Plus I was going to have to move heaven and earth to be able to buy this and one or two games. At least now I have another Christmas to gather up gift cards.

To be honest, a delay really doesn't bother me all that much. I am willing to wait for a handheld console that would have a stronger launch line-up and not risk having companies bail out or delay their games until the console starts to really sell some units. I believe that's what happened with the 3DS and that's probably why Megaman Legends 3 was canned...

Although, I'd definitely consider importing a PSV if the price seems right and not something ridiculous like it seems to be on Play-Asia. I'm just waiting for Gamescom and TGS to learn more information about the PSV among other things.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011...suggest-a-name-for-the-upcoming-ps-vita-game/

They're taking suggestions for what to name ModNation Racers for Vita.
Thats pretty cool. If it is a launch title might get that.

Just a random thought. Even though it was probably a 95%-98% chance already that the PS4 wouldn't come out in 2012. I think that the Vita being delayed clinches that. 2013 at the earliest now.
Is MK Vita real, or just a rumor?

That at or around launch would be awesome.
From what is going around the internet, one of the producers put out a "tweet" saying they were making MK for the Vita. Take it for what it is.

I hope they officially announce it sometime soon. Even if it's a direct port of the console versions it would be an instant buy for me.

Not sure if this is possible but...

Anyone think that apps like Netflix, MLB.tv, and NHL gamecenter that are on the PS3 could be on the Vita. That would definately get me thinking about buying the 3G Vita. Any word on such possibilities?

I feel if they keep on the track they are the vita will have a lot of capabilites that today's smartphones have without the phone aspect. I can see netflix, hulu, skype, etc. on it.

I'm guessing the reason they delayed the Vita is because wanted to have all the capabilities ready for launch and have a good line up of games. I just really hope they make the internet browser as good as smart phones since I heard they are using webkit for their internet browser.

This thing sounds good, but what I really want to know is what the prices for 3g per gb/unlimited are. It's at & t so I'm already thinking it'll probably be high. Unless they have it by month, and I'm wondering would unlocking it and using it on another carrier like T-Mobile or something be possible after a while. And for that matter with the touch screens, it seems like the homebrew scene could have a ball with the vita.

I guess the AT&T 3G data charges will depend on what type of functionality is available and what the bandwidth demands are:

Multiplayer gaming: probably doesn't take too much bandwidth

Social features: minimal bandwidth

Web browsing: moderate, but not a huge amount of bandwidth if you can't play video

Video/Audio Streaming: very high bandwidth (Skype, NetFlix and all other video streaming)

Game downloads: very high bandwidth (many PSP games are 400MB to 1.4GB and higher quality Vita games may be even bigger)

They may offer tiered plans allowing a certain amount of data per month, or they may offer plans that offer different levels of functionality (gaming and social only, gaming plus streaming, etc).

The reality is that since the 3G model isn't a phone, you'll still be using your phone for phone calls and the Vita's 3G data will primarily be for gaming/social features rather than web browsing. And I really think that most people buying a Vita with a 3G data option will also have a Droid or iPhone they can use for 3G web browsing and video streaming/conferencing, so they won't be looking to replace the phone with the Vita but instead want the Vita to be able to do multiplayer gaming wherever they go with minimal fuss.

I also think there is a pretty hard limit of no more than $30/month on the Vita 3G data plans since that's about what it would cost to add a hotspot tethering plan to your iPhone/Droid with most carriers, which would probably offer everything you'd get with a Vita 3G plan and more (since you could use the hotspot tethering with your iPad, laptop, etc).

I don't have ATT but those that do, hopefully it is included in the price but most likely it will not be.

I feel 30 might be a little high, even though the Vita will have many social functions, i feel most people will still utilize their smartphone/phone for these functions. I know for me, i waited until this year to buy a smartphone and i got one that could do everything so i would only need one device. Now as far as portable gaming that is where my GBA or Vita will come into play, but i really won't need it much more than gaming. Will these features be cool, yea they will but i feel beyond maybe video playback/netflix/hulu apps and maybe social apps most people will stick to their phone or home for internet browsing, music, etc.

A tier system would work best, maybe $30 for unlimited data, $20 for 10gb and $15 for 5gb. I know for me, when i am home i put my phone on wifi if i need to download anything big and mostly because it is faster.

I may get the 3G Vita just to keep my options open, but I doubt I'll play more than $5/month for 3G service...even then I'm not sure, and only if it is month-to-month w/o any term agreement...unless it's something attractive like $50/year for unlimited everything...or 3G multiplayer/social features for free with the 3G model. Not getting my hopes up though.

I feel you there, hoping for a descent price point of the 3G service but not expecting one. I have the wifi model pre-ordered right now but might switch to 3G once the pricing is laid out. I really hope its a once a year deal or something long term. A contract is out of the question for sure and monthly would have to be a good price point.

For those of you who are unable to attend gamescom, we are excited to bring you the latest PS Vita news updates directly from the SCE Europe press conference in Cologne, Germany. In addition to the social features previously announced, PS Vita users will also be able to download dedicated applications for Facebook, foursquare, Skype, and Twitter free of charge directly from the PlayStation Store.

Resistance fans will be happy to hear that the signature PlayStation franchise will join the PS Vita software lineup with Resistance: Burning Skies, a new Resistance experience developed specifically for PS Vita that takes full advantage of the system’s dual analog sticks and features an all-new hero and story written by William C. Dietz, author of Resistance: The Gathering Storm and Resistance: A Hole in the Sky.

SCEE also announced a brand-new title: Escape Plan, a ‘touching adventure’ where you use touch controls to guide our newest characters “Lil” and “Laarg” through a dark labyrinth of puzzles and traps.

Our publishing partners also unveiled some big news at gamescom: Ubisoft will launch a brand-new Assassin’s Creed for PS Vita, and EA Sports is bringing FIFA, the world’s most popular sports title, to the platform. As we mentioned at E3, the biggest and best games are coming to PS Vita, and today’s announcements further confirm that promise.

Please stay tuned as we bring you more updates from gamescom in Germany, and let us know what new titles and applications for PS Vita you’re most excited about in the comments below.
I like that they're expanding the non-gaming apps, though I'd love it if they allowed for more general purpose Android apps to be released for Vita.

I don't know if this was posted before, but I found this list while browsing some stuff.

I can't wait until Tokyo Game Show! I really need a release date for the PS Vita! Kind of sucks it won't be released around Christmas, but hopefully not too far after Christmas. With that being said, I'm loving the visuals on the Playstation Vita and I believe it has an excellent chance to compete against the 3DS this time around!

Just hope no one finds a way to make piracy on the Playstation Vita easy to accomplish, I believe that's what killed the Playstation Portable.

Just watched the ruin interview and they had a resident evil operation raccoon city video playing on the large screen with a vita painted around it. I hoped for a second it was an actual vita video and not just a ps3 game that sony was showing on all screens, regardless of whether they were made to look like a vita.

A new trailer for Uncharted: Golden Abyss introduces a new character:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zqyRuLHPCo

Hi everyone! I’m the the writer and director of UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss. We’ve just released a trailer that introduces a new and important character from our story. You met Jason Dante in our E3 demo and learned a little bit about him: that he and Drake have known each other a long time, that they each know Sully, that Drake taught Dante a lot about treasure hunting, that Dante can be a little, well, greedy.

This time we’re introducing Marisa Chase. But as she tells Drake at one point, call her “Chase,” only her grandfather calls her “Marisa.” I don’t want to give too much away at this point, but I can say this: once again Nathan Drake finds himself on a quest to solve a historical mystery which he hopes will lead to a fantastic treasure. The trick is staying alive long enough to get there. No easy task. And when Drake gets between Dante and Chase, events quickly spiral out of control.

We were lucky to get some really great talent to play our key characters. Nolan North, of course, reprises his role of Nathan Drake. Nolan brings more than just acting to the story, he helps make the dialogue his own, creates funny ad libs on the spot, and helps rework scenes that might be having problems. Chase is played by the talented Christine Laken, who you might remember as Al from the television show “Step by Step.” Dante is played by the amazing Jason Spisak, who’s played almost as many characters as Mr. North. Working with these guys and watching them bring our UNCHARTED world to life was amazing. I think Amy Hennig, the writer over at Naughty Dog, once told me that good actors can make even my bad dialogue sound good. Not that I have any… :)
Mad Blocker is coming to the Vita, which I believe was a Mini:

Since those gametrailers movies won't play embedded, they are serving as nothing more than huge links to the videos. Do you mind just converting them to links so the page isn't huge?

I'm vowing to finally get into Little Big Planet when it comes out on the Vita. I've bought LBP 1, 2, and PSP but could never stuck with them. From what everyone is saying, LBP Vita will be the best versioin yet so maybe I'll finally do something cool with it.

I think it's probably because I never played the Uncharted games, but I'm just not interested in Uncharted: Golden Abyss. I think I just need to play an Uncharted game and spark the fire in my heart.

I like how there is some news on the PS Vita at Gamescom, we all know the biggest news will be coming out of Tokyo Game Show. Hopefully Sony decides to offer the PSV in an alternate color (please?), so those who are sick of owning black can finally own their next most owned console color, white.

You can keep the ModNations, LittleBigPlanets, and Wipeouts (maybe even Uncharted too). Gravity Rush is what looks interesting to me - need more Sony Japan Studio games revealed next month!!

Uncharted 2 is the best action game I've ever played without question. That means Golden Abyss is a system seller for me.

Details on Resistance: Burning Skies along with a video in the link:
Ever since the PS Vita was unveiled in January, the handheld’s dual analog sticks have promised a proper first-person shooter experience on the go. The reveal of Resistance: Burning Skies at PlayStation’s gamescom press conference showed that the future of portable shooters will be bright from the outset.

Immediately after the conference ended, I met up with Rob Heubner from developer Nihilistic, who detailed some of what we can expect from the Vita’s first FPS foray. The next morning, Huebner and producer Frank Simon presented an extended play-by-play for international media.

Huebner said the studio’s core mission was to create a ”no-compromises experience with all the elements you’d expect from a Resistance game.” The Burning Skies demo fit neatly into the Resistance universe, but brought significant new features that evolved the game’s interactivity. As mentioned in the press conference, you’ll battle new Chimeran enemies with new weapons, all through the eyes of protagonist Tom Riley — a New York City fire fighter.

Burning Skies takes place right before Resistance 2, filling in the lost years and giving players a ground-eye view of the day the Chimera came to NYC. Huebner and Simon guided us through Ellis Island, which in the game’s alternate universe isn’t a tourist trap but a SRPA research facility. The base is under attack by the Chimera, who are dead-set on recovering something of interest. A weapon, perhaps?

A playthrough of the demo revealed a few surprises in that realm. I quickly got my hands on a Chimeran weapon referred to as the CFG (cluster fire gun). This weapon discharged short bursts of brittle ordnance that shatter on impact, a great tool for attacking soft targets such as tender Chimeran flesh. The CFG has an alt-fire mode, a Resistance staple. The manner in which it’s deployed, however, is PS Vita-only. A quick tap of the screen sets crosshairs on multiple enemies. Press fire, and they all fall in rapid succession.

This touch alt-fire method extended to the more familiar Carbine rifle. To fire off the underbarrel grenade launcher, merely touch in the direction you want to lob one, and off it goes in a fragmentational ‘splosion. Tossing a grenade works in similar fashion: When you touch the screen, an icon appears above your finger so you can see how long you’re cooking the grenade, then a “throwing” motion arcs them on their way.

The touch-sensitive screen also takes on the melee duties. An icon of a fireman’s axe (naturally) resides on-screen, just next to the Square button. Slide your thumb over when a Chimera closes in too close, and it’ll quickly be reduced to a pile of extraterrestrial giblets. Demo driver Frank Simon landed a one-hit stealth kill on an unsuspecting grunt as well.

The developers also demonstrated the weapon wheel, a feature near and dear to any Resistance fan’s heart. You can swap guns as you’re used to on the console games, or just tap the rifle you’re looking for directly on-screen.

It might sound like there’s a lot of touchscreen interaction in the game, but Nihilistic is being selective with its implementation. Heubner says they’ll only take advantage of “as many features of the PS Vita that make sense” for Burning Skies. Touch is used to keep you in the action and out of the menus.

The final new-to-Resistance feature is a first-person cover system, not unlike that found in the Killzone series. If you’re crouching behind certain structures, you’ll automatically go into cover. You’ve got the optional of tilting the Vita to see over or around cover, or you can just aim down the sights the old-fashioned way with L1. If you stand up or back away, you’re out of cover – no getting stuck.

It should be said that Resistance: Burning Skies is an attractive shooter. “We don’t have to compromise on the visual side just because it’s a mobile platform,” said Heubner. “It’s got all the special effects you’d expect on a PS3 game. And the game demo was presented seamlessly from beginning to end – not a loading screen to be found.

Back to the demo. Now equipped with a minigun, Riley ventured deep into the Ellis Island underground facility where human scientists labor to reverse engineer the Chimeran weapons. Fortunately, they left an an ammo upgrade for the minigun, which made it even more deadly.

And you’ll need all the firepower you can muster, because Resistance: Burning Skies throws a lot at you. The devs showed off the horsepower of Vita by filling a huge room with hordes of Chimeran attackers of multiple varieties. After raining liquid hot death on the enemies (and their reinforcements), the real threat reveals itself: a huge Chimera that loomed three times larger than most you’ve seen… and apparently, it’s just a mini-boss.

The demo ended there, but it not before making it clear that Resistance: Burning Skies is well on its way to delivering on the promise of becoming the first proper portable first-person shooter.

Details on Escape Plan:
Hi everyone and guten tag from Cologne, Germany! Some of you may know me as one of the collaborative partners with SCEA Santa Monica Studios for the award-winning PlayStation Network exclusives, Fat Princess and Fat Princess: Fat Roles. I’m not only here to introduce Fun Bits Interactive to you, but to also introduce Escape Plan, as one of the upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. Escape Plan made its debut on Tuesday at the Sony Computer Entertainment Europe press conference and I have to express how thrilled I have been to see how well it has been received by colleagues and media alike throughout the week.

Placing bite-sized entertainment in the palm of your hands, Escape Plan features two hapless characters, Lil and Laarg, who have been captured and need your influence, skill and brainpower to escape from a dark labyrinth of irreverent puzzles and traps. Escape Plan takes advantage of the PlayStation Vita’s multi-touch display, rear touch panel and swipe interfaces. Players can swipe, squeeze, poke and slap these guys to interact and manipulate the environment and help Lil and Laarg survive each deadly room before their captor and nemesis recycles them and turns them into his minions … or sheep.

For those of you who haven’t seen anything on Escape Plan yet, watch the video above for a peek of what is in store for you next spring on PS Vita.

I hope you are excited for Escape Plan as much as we are! Lil and Laarg will be as fun to watch in victory as they will in the hilarious agony of defeat. We look forward to reaching out to our fans and will continue to keep you posted on anything related to Escape Plan, so please continue to check back here on the PlayStation.Blog for more information!

I haven't played any Resistance games either, but those screenshots look really gorgeous! I might just pick that up, even though I have no idea what the story is like, haha. Escape Plan looks really nice as well, it has a nice Tim Burton look to it and I hope it has a similar style soundtrack as well. Actually, now that I think of it, it reminds me of the early Oddworld games.

PS Vita seems to be pretty solid so far, just a bit curious about the 3G plan and what Tokyo Game Show provides us! Thankfully the Playstation Vita isn't region-locked. I do hope they decide to try and give Taiko a chance over here, at least make it downloadable on PSN stores.

For me the Resistance games are ok. The storyline is kind of middle of the road Sci Fi fodder and the game environments are rather bland. I'm still happy to see it come to the vita. I'd rather have infamous or ratchet and clank honestly, but it will be a great addition to Uncharted (which I think is Sony's best IP hands down).

Yeah I've heard that the Resistance games were just alright. Although, I do like the solid Playstation Vita line-up so far, we just don't know which games are release day games. Tokyo Game Show couldn't come any faster!

Man, I'm getting myself hyped up a bit too much for the PS Vita, the more news that comes out, the more excited I get! The device looks beautiful, seems beautiful and IS beautiful. My only concern is how well it will be received in the West and if pirates will be able to crack it. Pirates ruined the last PSP, at least in the West and it hurt them big time.

The social aspect seems pretty cool, but might only be useful in urban environments (which is unfortunately where I don't live). Unless, they are just random events that occur as you go about your day, leaving your Playstation Vita on?

Jailbreaking a device is not necessarily a bad thing. Some people are just looking to run custom software. For instance, I can tell you that the vita will be very popular with the emulator crowd if it is hacked. Full speed n64 and pretty good DC and saturn emulation.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/19/virtua-tennis-4-serves-ps-vita-exclusive-features-vt-apps/

Some details for the Vita version of Virtua Tennis 4, which includes an optional touch-based control scheme and the additional modes that are called VT Apps:
Virtua Tennis 4 for PlayStation Vita first stepped onto the court at E3. Even at that early stage in its development, the game showed signs of ambition. It seems that Sega is taking great care to adapt the tried-and-true gameplay for PS Vita by extensively leveraging the handheld’s hardware strengths, all without dumbing down the series’s winning formula.

Now, at gamescom, I finally got to see some of these game modes in action.

Virtua Tennis 4’s core experience is nearly identical to its recently-released PS3 counterpart; you can create a character, start a career, and participate in tournaments while enhancing your skills through all kinds of bizarre tennis-related skill tests. Likewise, you can jump into the shoes of Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, or other real-world tennis stars.

What PS Vita brings to the court is a new, yet optional way to control the main serve-and-volley action, plus a series of “VT Apps.”

The core gameplay opens up considerably thanks to the PS Vita touch screen. Tap on the screen and your player will run to that spot. Once in place, you swipe in the direction you want to hit the ball, utilizing different gestures for topspin shots, lobs, backhands and more. Multitouch is employed to launch a lethal power shot – just swipe using two fingers to add an exclamation mark to a long volley.

Of course, you can still use the traditional stick-and-button controls, but here’s where it gets interesting: since both types of controls are always enabled, you can use a combination of the two. After a couple of games, I was navigating around the court with the left analog stick, and directing my shots with my right index finger on the screen. You can leverage any mix of touch and traditional controls, even in the middle of a point.

You might not always have enough time to power through a five-set marathon match, and so Virtua Tennis 4 for PS Vita includes a number of “VT apps” which are exclusive to the platform. My fave is called Touch Vs – a top-down mode for two players to compete on a single PS Vita. By turning the PS Vita on its side — air-hockey style — each player gets an analog stick and some screen real estate to shoot. It should prove to be a fun way squeeze in some two-player competition (and start a few conversations, too).

Additionally, Virtua Tennis 4 takes advantage of the Vita’s gyroscopes with the first person VR match (see the video above), and skill-building Rock the Boat, where you’re controlling your player as well as a ship you can lean back and forth. Virtua Tennis 4 also plans to take advantage of the system’s cameras through use of augmented reality, though Sega wasn’t yet ready to show that off.

Virtua Tennis 4 will be ready for launch when the PS Vita goes on sale. Tennis game aficionados should probably plan on taking it home with them the day they pick up a PlayStation Vita.
If Sony doesn't have a huge lineup at launch for both retail and downloadable games for the NA/EU launches, they will have failed with their claims of how easy it is to develop for and port to.

Sony is actually endorsing homebrewing this time around, but we most likely won't be seeing emulators or anything like that on the PSV. I'm all for homebrew and I'm not particularly against emulators, but to pirate the console to death is pretty terrible.

I will admit, I too have pirated on the PSP and I regret it.

I just pre-ordered the PSV today. $91.xx down, about $160+ more to go :p This will be the first console/handheld I get to support at launch, feels pretty cool :D Launch line-up should be good, actually hoping the publishers hold some of the games back so as to not overwhelm the users. And more importantly, to give all of the games a fair shot at selling.
what the hell is a battleship doing in a tennis game??
Yeah... I actually didn't even notice that until you pointed it out, then I was thinking "Wth is that doing there?" After looking at it for about 30 seconds, I realized there were targets on it. No idea why they had to choose a battleship though, but I guess it's just because it's SEGAAAAA!
