There are no rules for tipping, and you are never obliged to tip.

Shit's so annoying. Waiters don't get tips from me for taking my order and bringing me my food/drinks; they get one for going beyond what they're expected to do.
Not sure that would work with me. When I go into a place, I expect the best service they can provide, so short from blowing me, it wouldn't be possible to impress me and i'd never tip. So, as long as they do what they should, they get a basic tip. The better they do, the more they get, but I wouldn't say it's ever going beyond what they're expected to do.

They get paid by their boss to do what they should. It's the extra that you tip for, and they have to earn it.

For example, I was at Amy's Ice Cream in downtown one night, and the guy who prepared my food was crackin' (funny) jokes, flipping my ice cream in the air and catching it behind his back in the cone, etc. He got a $5 tip for kicking ass, which was almost as much as the cone was.

Yeah, but they get paid a lot less than minimum wage, and i'm sure a lot of wait-people don't know that their bosses are required to pay them more if they don't make enough in tips to meet minimum wage.
Well, not all of us can be as inhuman as you. ;)
Inhuman? What a fucking joke.

Waiters aren't entitled to tips, period. This shitty idea that has pervaded our culture disgusts me.
In Japan, waiters consider it insulting if you try to tip them. I wish it were more like that here.

I agree, but it's where we are, and it doesn't look like it'll be changing any time soon. I guess I could get away with it if I only ate at places once or twice, but I frequent a lot of the same places, so if it means less urine in my food, i'm tipping.
The leaderboard seems to be rather slow to update, as it still says I have what I had before I opened PGR4.
It's pretty quick to update my nosedive into obscurity.

We're supposed to be cheapasses, not cheap-assholes.

How am I being an asshole for not giving a waiter extra money to do their job?

This is the fucked up mindset that our culture has that I was just talking about. Thanks for demonstrating the idiocy so flawlessly for me.

My favorite waitress at IHOP gets paid 2.50 an hour, on a slow day she may only have a few tables an hour, so it barely pays for the gas she burns driving to work. She doesn't even get a free meal when she works, they take out 50 cents an hour to pay for their one allowed meal. I gave her a $10 tip on a $30 meal tonight and she earned every fucking cent.

If you want to be pissed, be pissed at the corporations that own most restaurants. If they had to pay minimum wage plus tips we wouldn't have to pick up the slack. Waiters/waitress are some of the lowest paid people in the country, especially at cheaper restaurants. Then there are always the people who spend $100 at a more expensive place and tip 5 bucks. Meanwhile the waiter can't afford to eat at the place where they work.

If you're got a problem with tipping, then you should start advocating that all people make minimum wage period.

The expectation that people will tip is why they're paid so low, and thus, it's the source of the problem, but you seem to have missed that entirely.

And why should a waiter be able to afford to eat where they work? You don't expect a maid to be able to afford to live in the rich person's house that she cleans, do you?

Oh, and I

QFT.

I never understood how waiters, etc. actually made a living off their hourly wage.

Because they can't.

They live and die by their tips.

If I tipped based on my expectation of what their service should be, and how far they exceeded that, they'd be paying me to eat at their establishment. ;)

This is news to me. But hey, it makes me feel better if I'm a little light on the tip, providing it's true.

Nice.

I was referring you to where I said the expectation that people will tip is the source of the problem, by the way, but it's good that you saw that since you didn't know it.

Liq, you'd be paying it anyway. If employers had to pay their workers minimum wage, they'd have to offset their costs and would raise prices in food. At least this way, we have some control over it.
This is news to me. But hey, it makes me feel better if I'm a little light on the tip, providing it's true.
It's true, it's the only reason they're allowed to get away with not paying minimum wage.

But like I said, not many people know about it, and i'm sure people in the service industry are getting screwed over it.
I'm with Mr. Pink on the tipping thing
Oh come on, with all that cash you be flauntin? You bwallin' enough to leave a nice tip. ;)

or at least I'm with Mr. Pink as far as my feelings towards tipping, But I generally leave a $5 tip regardless of what the price of the meal was.

Listening to the lil'uns prattle on about how proud they are they don't tip, while they enjoy their spittle soup and manseed mayo.

Manseed mayo? What is that?

So in hindsight we're really tipping these people extra to not fuck with our food

That's true, if I get bad service and leave a poor tip, I'll avoid the restaurant for about 3 months. Even longer for delivery places.
