I'm not really disagreeing with you , my point was that , depending on the sequence , it becomes associated with the game and becomes an expected part of it. As with the previously mentioned examples , Metroid Prime stood out from some of the other metroid games because of a lack of self-destruct sequence , Halo 2 stood out some because of no warthog run , ect. I don't have a problem with formulaic/cliche sequences , assuming they don't suck (expects to hear response "well they do suck").
