Alright. Well it all started when I decided it was time to buy an LCD. I had an HDTV for about 4 years before that time, but it was a huge ass CRT and I got sick of moving it around when I would move every year or so, so I decided to go thinner. I knew there were a lot of crap TVs out there, like almost every one they sell at walmart, and while I wasn't aiming for the top of the food chain, I wanted to get a decent TV. I waiting a while, keeping an eye out for deals. Finally, newegg.com had a sale on their 32 inch Sharp Aquos TV, the 32D40U. While I was slightly nervous because the TVs weren't made in Japan like other Sharps, it had gotten pretty good reviews everywhere I looked, so I figured, at the price that I was paying for it, it would be worth it.
So, I buy the TV, get superfast shipping, and I finally get the TV. I inspect the box because of Neweggs ZERO return policy on items that big. The box looked fine, so I accepted the package. I get it out and hook a DVD player up to it. It looks great. The picture is solid. Something seems a bit off though...whatever, lets try the 360. I hook up the 360, and I then notice that Sharp forgot to include something on my TVs spec sheet. The ability to pour feces straight out of the screen.
The TV had a horrible ghosting problem. Now, I know about TVs. I know all LCDs are prone to a slight ghost, but that most people can't even see it. Well on this set, I saw it. If I had to guess, I would have said it had a 45 ms respone time, instead of the 6 that it claimed to have. Playing games for more than half an hour gave me a headache. So, I figured, ok, something must be wrong with my cables. I tried other cables, still, I got the ghosting. I tried a different Xbox; ghosting. So, I finally called up Sharp and told them my problem. Don't get me wrong, they were nice, and I agreed to send their techs pictures and videos of the problem I was having.
I got a call back the next couple of days, and I had high hopes, because how often does a CS keep the promise of a returned call? I spoke to the head tech guy and he said that yes, there was a serious problem with me TV, without a doubt. They set me up with a guy to come to my apartment and take a look at it, and said they would call to set something up, but they never did. I kept calling back asking if they had set it up, but they kept saying "not yet." So, a little annoyed, I asked for his number so I could set something up. I was moving a week later and wanted to get the show on the road before I left. I called the TV fixer guy and he said there was no way he could get the job done before I left.
So, I waited a week until I moved. I have to live back at my parents for a couple of weeks until I could move into my new apartment, and since my parents lived out in the boonies, I had to drive over an hour to the repair shop. Fine I said. I got a good deal on the TV, it's worth it. I took it to the guy and dropped it off, and said I would get a call in a week. A week goes by, nothing.
At about a week and a half, I got tired of waiting and called them and asked them what was up. They then went on to tell me about how my TV was not broken, and that it was a result of normal ghosting on an LCD. I told him that that was impossible. I drove down with my 360 to show him exactly the problem I was having. He then went on to tell me that it was because "Xbox 360s don't do a high def. signal, and that's why there's ghosting." I looked at him like he was the biggest idiot in the world, and slowly explained to him that yes, they do. He then went on to tell me that not all TVs are compatible with 360s. I then asked him how in the hell could my 5 month old (at the time) 360 not be compatible with a brand new Sharp LCD TV? So, he told me to take the TV home and that he would call Sharp and discuss it with them, and that they would give me a call.
Anyway, to cut this short, after about 5 broken call back promises, I called them, spoke with the head tech guy that had told me my TV was borked, and he told me that the other guy was right, there was nothing wrong with my TV, going only on his word. I sold the TV as a broken set and took a huge loss in the money I spent on it.
At the time, I was in college and working part time at an ice cream/smoothie/juice bar/ baked goods shop and didn't make much money, and it had taken a very long time to save for that TV, and it had all been flushed down the drain. I saved up again, bought a 32 inch westinghouse and it's been good to me thus far.
It's too bad really. When I was 16 I had gotten my first job ever, I saved to buy, you guessed it, a 32 inch Sharp TV, the first TV I had ever bought, and I loved it, but now after this, I can honestly say i'll never buy a Sharp product again.
