With all the questions about what will and what won't work with the new slim PStwo, I figured I'd start a thread where we can all contribute our individual findings. I have a few questions of my own, too. Hopefully this list can be informative to all. Right now we know the following:

WILL NOT WORK
-PS2 Multitap
-HDD and associated games (FFXI, etc.)
-Madcats PS1 Memory card
-misc. third-party controllers, depending on shape of plug
-Logitech wireless receiver works, but will awkwardly prop up the corner (unless PStwo is vertical)

WORKS FINE
-first-party controllers
-First-party memory cards
-Gameshark

Right now I'm wondering if anyone knows the status of the X-Port/Sharkport, and other non-Sony-endorsed peripherals such as the GameShark. Any info that can be contributed will be much appreciated.

**I'll be editing this now and then; please bring any other additions or corrections, confirmations or denials or whatever and I'll try to add them.

Wait . . . will ALL multitaps not work, or just the offical one? That's just plain stupid for it not to be compatible with a multi-tap - it ruins gaming sessions with friends!

From what I hear, the problem is that the plug physically won't fit in the new model. You know how it has that double plug, that goes into the controller AND memory card ports? Well the spacing between the ports is different on the new model PStwo, so the double plug no longer fits right.

Supposedly a new multitap will be released. So that's the solution I guess, although it really is a slap in the face. PS3 better have four ports dammit. Every console released since 1996 has had four ports, except for PS2!!
Silly Silly Sony...Why don't you just put the 4 ports on the system to begin with ?!?!
Silly Silly Sony, why do you charge me $25 instead of giving me 4 ports for free?!?!... oh.. wait, yea, they're in business to make money.

just a curious suggestion...

lets kill two birds with one stone here... and also make this the checklist for software.....

including PS2 games, psone games... and thirdparty or unlicensec software...

seems like a good idea?

right?
Right?

So Microsoft and Nintendo (both with 4 ports) aren't in the business of making money? Is that what you're saying?

I'll use my own experience as a guide. I will not spend an extra $25 to get 4 player support for my PS2. Anytime a multiplayer game comes out multiplatform I will pick up either the XBox or Gamecube version over the PS2 version. A perfect example is Burnout 3, I didn't even consider getting it on PS2 because I couldn't play 4 player right out of the box. The end result for Sony, they make less money off people like me because they aren't getting the profit from the license fee from me purchasing a certain title.

I'd probably only list the software you find that doesn't work...Because chances are most stuff works except for Final Fantasy XI.

No, He's saying that Sony is smarter because they're making money off of a peripheral that the other companies don't offer.

They all are, it's just that Sony isn't trying to hide that they're trying to screw consumers. Now we gotta buy another MultiTap? fucking ridiculous.
chances are most stuff works except for Final Fantasy XI.
things will fizzle through... trust me...

Remember all the PSone games that wont work on PS2?

gotta see about those...

plus i know.. i just KNOW one or two PS2 titles AT LEAST are for some strange ass reason... are just gonna play wrong for some weird reason... whether it be lock-ups.... of overheating or something...

i just know theres gonna be an issue down the line...
(not that it will stop me or any of you from buying a PStwo... but it will be nice to know when... "hey... uhh... cookie and cream wont play music after level 9....." you know it'll be somethign weird like that)

Sony was the obvious leader at the onset of the latest console wars, they knew from experience (with the PSX), that they would be able to sell the hell out of a console and a multitap by only including two controller ports on the console. Nintendo was playing catch-up, Microsoft was just getting started, they both needed whatever incentive they could, just to sell enough consoles.

If they could have gotten away with getting an extra $25 per console, they'd have jumped on it.. as it was, only Sony was really in a position to stick it to the customer.

All three companies are in business to make money... (as well as every for-profit organization for that matter).. sometimes gamers tend to forget that as we bitch about things like the multitap, or overpriced games, or overpriced consoles, or lack of price drops on currently huge selling games, etc etc.

And trust me, the money Sony made on sales of multitaps severly outweighs the amount of money they lose from people purchasing multiplayer for the other consoles.
And trust me, the money Sony made on sales of multitaps severly outweighs the amount of money they lose from people purchasing multiplayer for the other consoles.
That may be, I'm just curious as to why, knowing that the old multitaps didn't work, they didn't just put 4 ports on the new system. I haven't seen the new system though so I don't even know if its possible though.

So now everyone that buys a PSTwo is going to have to drop another $25 or so on a new multitap... and you don't see why they didn't put 4 ports on the system??

Just because you decide to buy the game for a different console due to the lack of 4 controller ports doesn't mean that anyone else does. If you look at the sales of games that are multiplatform, the PS2 sales are always damn close to the Xbox sales if not way higher.

most likely couldnt fit those 4 extra slots (2 controller, 2 memory cards) along with the ones that are already on it....plus, for 8 player games you would still need another multitap

Nope. I got one, and there's no way that 2 more controller and 2 more memory card ports would fit. Next to the memory card ports there is the open/eject button and the power/reset button. Also, next to the controller ports are 2 USB ports.

All good points. Personally, it makes little difference to me if the system has 2 or 4 ports because, like I said I just pick it up for another system. If I had bought my Xbox before my PS2, would I have still bought a PS2? Probably not, but that's just my preference.

Since you brought up Nintendo and Microsoft playing catchup to the PS2 with the current generation, I wonder what the next generation will be like considering that, right now, it looks like XBox next will be out befor PS3. Will sony have to play catch up and have to put in the little extras like 4 ports in the next gen? Who knows.

I will give them credit in this generation for improving the DVD player in later versions of the PS2 to the point where its better than the XBox player (which requires the extra $25...). I guess no system will ever have everyone 100% happy and we will always find something to complain about.

Edit-Sorry to the OP for kind of overtaking his thread with our discussion.

Yeah, you can never make everybody happy. Someone will always want something new or something different or something better.

My PStwo wont read my Madcats PS1 Memory card....add that to the list of doesnt work....still works on my older PS2 though...freakin odd.

As per joystickz suggestion, I have edited the title of the thread. Any games that don't work will be added to the list as well.

Multitap Issue... Sony's practices regarding controller ports comes down to this
-Good for SONY
-Bad for gamers.
Works for them, sucks for us. For those who are on top in the business world, the "works for them" option inevitably wins in the end. Bah, humbug and all, but thats how it is. So I agree with Cornfed that their practice is working out, but it does indeed suck, I am indeed having it stuck to me, and I will probably end up buying the damn thing anyway. At least we don't have to deal with that wretched PSX, with 2 controller ports in the BACK of the machine. Damn.

Anyway, on with the list!

I haven't really been following the new PS2, but is it true that it's going to have a flip top? Of all the stuff I'd heard about it, I hadn't heard this. So is this true?

I saw it http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/245719.asp on an EB customer rating thing.
yup, it flips open
Man, I'd had no desire to get it before, but this makes me kinda want to get it now. Cause I always feel like my disks are getting scuffed when I put them in the disk tray.

EDIT - Does anyone know if EB is still doing the trade-in for the current PS2 and 5 games?

Cool...I read in the other PStwo thread that it's a specific list of games that they are taking. Is it online anywhere?

Just look at the PSTwo topics. There's plenty of them and you'll get all the answers you need there.
I dont give a shaq-fu about 4 ports, I barely use the SECOND one.
Lol, yeah me neither.

Well, Nintendo wasn't play catchup with controller ports. They already did that with the N64 (one of the few things done right) So it would be rather backwards to suddenly go back to two ports.

Hey, here's an idea. How about we stay on the topic of PStwo compatibility CHECKLIST? The discussion about the multitap is way out of proportion as to how many people actually have one. I just want to find out if there's going to be problem with multiple items. Can anybody else confirm anymore games? Thanks.

Well a quick note. The controller ports are recessed on the PSTwo and I had controllers that wouldn't fit in due to this. I had to purchase a $4.99 extension cable that would fit and plug my controllers into that. So it cost me an extra $10 to use my exist controllers.
I dont give a shaq-fu about 4 ports, I barely use the SECOND one.
True. I haven't used my PS2 second controller port in over 6 months. With my Xbox and GC, I never used more than two of my controller ports. So having two controller ports is really all I need.

All my stuff should work on the PSTwo except my dance pad, because it has a big receiver. If it doesn't, it's fine because it's kind of broke anyway, and I need to get a new one.
