The Rough Guide to What's Rare

This is for anyone who is trying to complete their collection, looking for a game in particular or is wondering about games they already own! Feel free to ask questions here and ideally you won't get flamed....but we know how that goes :p

Prices are an estimated base price on sites like Ebay. Games are almost always cheaper if you score them at places like gamestop and EB. There are lots of ways to score a game you're looking for at a decent price, but it mostly comes down to luck and searching every last place in town that looks like it's carrying a game.

"Rare" is defined as how readily available the game is in general. It has nothing to do with how much the game is going for, or the demand, though those obviously affect a game's rarity.

OOP = out of print, I'll only be using this with current gen games
~ = means "approximately"

Rare, Very Rare, Somewhat Rare-- these are estimates too. Some game games are definitely hard to find, some games are regionally hard to find, some games are just a little evasive.

here's the deal:

Post some rare or valuable or scarce etc. games...ANYTHING. Even it sucks ass.

They can be for any system and I'll make a new column if I don't have the system listed yet.

MAKE YOUR REPLIES CLEAR. I don't want to read a whole epic about how you got a copy of Suikoden 2 after "doing favors" behind your local gas station. :p

If you have comments about the games you listed, put them after your listing.

Production numbers would also be a big plus-- but don't just guess, only put this down if you know for sure-- i.e. you have a source.

-----------
Good example:
PS-- Suikoden 2 ($120 new)
--Rare as hell, high demand, good rpg, only 100,000 made according to blah blah
-----------

You don't have to underline the system, but it would help. Also, the price isnt necessary, but it could help too.

Feel free to discuss, argue, and flame people as much as you want BUT PLEASE KEEP ENTRIES FOR THE LIST CLEAR ;)

I think most of us know what's 'rare', and this post is going to cause nothing but bitching and flaming.. this will not end well.

At least it's off to the usual Scorch's good start.

And the usual negative comment about my negative comment from Mr. Unoriginal.. at least his username decribes his posting habits.

Anyways, so it's not a total threadcrap..

Rare on the XBox:

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (obviously)
-- Rare to find sealed, rare to find below $30, but not rare to find..

MotoGP2 ($35 or so)
-- Rare as hell (around here, anyways) to find, definately pick it up if you see it.

I'll go ahead and get this thread started right by disagreeing with both of those games being rare. They are sought after games, but are extremely easy to find. As of right now, there are no rare games for Xbox. The closest thing to being a rare game would be F1 2001 (sells for $30-$50 on eBay), but even that can be found with fairly minimum effort.

Yeah, rare game threads!
Will this thread become rare/valuable?
Yes, there is already a listing on eBay for this thread and it very cleary states *RARE* in the description.

I have general ideas of what's rare but would still be interested in seeing a list made. (Particularly with the 3 for $15 deal going on right now). What I would be even more interested in, however, is some sort of ACTUAL data listing what kind of production certain games had. It seems like so much of it is of the "my uncle worked at such and such company and he said . . ." variety of information.

Dang. I was hoping it would become as rare as the other 8000 topics that exist on rare games before it got put up on eBay.

For the classic games, just check out the online rarity guide at www.digitpress.com. It's a fairly accurate list of the rarity of games.

Really? I've never been able to find MotoGP2 around here, but i've run across stuff like Suikoden 2, Intelligent Qube, etc. My GameCrazy had five F1 2001's, which was odd. I did pick one up. What about Fatal Frame? Chaos Theory LE?

I see Fatal Frame a lot now. It can be picked up used at GameRush for less than $10 I believe. Chaos Theory LE is very difficult to find in-store, so that one may become rare once all the online stores are sold out.
People say ikagura (gc) is rare.
I second that it's almost impossible to find it new. You can get one of ebay for around $35 shipped (used).

It's interesting to see people say Ikaruga is rare. It was thanks to CAG that I got my copy of Ikaruga for $9.99 back in the day.
Mr. Unoriginal.. at least his username decribes his posting habits.
Hahahahaha! Unoriginal, I GET it.

Here's a question for everyone. Is Tomba 2 rare at all? I know the first one got a lot of commercial time when the PSX came out but I never heard ANYTHING about part 2. I saw it today used for $15.00 but passed.

Tomba 2 is kind of rare, but not too pricey... it's a decent game.

And Rhapsody can break 100 easily. Gamestop sells it for 25 bucks I think, so check your local ones... I know got it around that price when I got lucky and found it there a year or so ago.

Didn't know Brigandine was rare... saw it at Gamestop the other day for 20 bucks but I passed because reviews were not that favorable, and I don't like buying a rare game just for rarity sake.

I'd add Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre (both for playstation) to the list as well.

Anyone seen the ultra-rare N64 Ultimate Entertainment Skylander7 package?? A bundle of vodka, Superman 64, and a Mad Catz controller?

So far I've only created three, but nobody ever wanted em but me...
I think most of us know what's 'rare', and this post is going to cause nothing but bitching and flaming.. this will not end well.
agree. Like I said before this could get nowehere fast.

Take Sonic Pinball Party for example. This game is very hard to find new because only one store (target) ever carry it. You wont be seeing a new or even complete on ebay but you will always see 4 or 5 auction for suikoden 2 or panzer dragoon.

Another game is bomerman 64 second attack. This game got a very limited print and you rarely see it new or even complete on ebay.

So would you said Sonic Pinball Party and bomberman 64 second attack are rare? yes. Would they go for a lot like suikoden 2 new or complete? hard to say because because very people have them.

 I'll need a full handle to enjoy that trash. By enjoy, I mean pass out before I can get the game in the N64.

I'll add that to the OP. Seems like it would be difficult to find the raw numbers and most of it is hearsay.

Spikeout Battle Street, after the reprint is still in low production but can be found. Chaos Theory Collectors Edition for XBox is alittle rare. Kakuto Chojin was in low production but the game got trashed, so It's not high in value.

Cube I always thought was just Cubivore and both RE's. But now it only seems to be Cubivore and possibly Ikaruga.

N64 I would go with Starcraft, Harvest Moon 64 and Ogre Battle 64.

Edit: GBA: Doom 1 and Doom 2 NES: Little Samson, DW4 (theres always a rarity list for NES somewhere out there though that is pretty legit)

You can add this to the list.

Sega Saturn:
Panzer Dragon Saga
House of the Dead
Burning Rangers

NES:
Stadium Events

PS1:
Klonoa
Some "rare" PS1 games:

Rhapsody ($70-90)
Brigandine ($40-50)
Persona 2 ($40-60)
How about rhapsody disc only (with music cd)
is Otogi 2 now rare? I want to play it but I can never fiiind it anymore :(
They just had it on sale at Outpost.com for $20-- it's around. Fun game too, especially if you're a fan of destructable environments :)

Edit: oh yeah, it was at Walmart.com, not outpost.

When did Spikeout: Battle Street recieve a reprint. I haven't heard of any. I only know of the original print that was sent to EB and no where else. I haven't seen, nor found this game anywhere else. Where have you seen it other than EB?

I'd like to second a suggestion that's already been mentioned in this thread, stick to listing rare games for the current generation of systems and leave the old ones out. Digitpress already has a comprehensive list compiled for all systems and games prior to this generation. Making a list of valuable games for the PSone or SNES based off of what somebody on the internet payed for a game only leads to erroneous listings and misinformation.

Honestly, who cares if its rare....its an AMAZING GAME!

I bought it the day it came out for $50, so its a steal for $15!!

Sounds good!

As for listing things by ebay prices, I think it's the best way to go. Like that's what you would pay if you wanted it right now...I do mention that prices vary a lot depending on where you buy it, so there's no misinformation here.

Here's some rare or HTF GBA titles (I the idea of sticking with this gen)
Car Battler Joe-about $30 on eBay
Lufia-about $25-$30 on eBay

I really couldn't think of any others, besides the obvious Doom 1 & 2.
I guess Fire Emblem, Mech Platoon, & Rock N Roll Racing could be a challenge to find, but I wouldn't classify them as rare (I don't think).

Jedi Outcast for the Cube is rare? Say it ain't so...

*whistles and walks past thread, trying to not to make eye contact*

I had a bitch of a time getting Top Angler and Jedi Outcast for the Cube, but I finally got both within the last month. I would consider them to be two of the rarest GameCube games.

And you care that a game is rare because why?

Ego?
Show off?
Fulfillment?
Satisfaction?

Most of those games listed are bad to decent. None of them are AAA titles. I could care less about any of them.

yes, all of them.

(The ghey rhetorical questions on this site need to stop.)
