if some of these games were truly "rare", wouldnt the prices be a little closer to the price it was brand new if not more?

its not a rare game just because you dont see it at your local game store too often.

Digital Press has a good scale for rarity.

This is copied from Digital Press' online guide.
________________________________________________
There is a scarcity value commonly appears next to the dollar value, and it represents a scale of 1 through 10 with 1 being the most common and 10 being the most rare. The following is the legend to use when viewing these rarity ratings.

* R0: Titles listed with a rarity of zero are simply games that were never released or require more research on our side. You’ll see this listed on ALL “Rumor Mill” entries.
* R1: These are the items you can find or BUY anywhere. When you find a bunch of games, these WILL be in the pile.
* R2: You can find these titles just about anywhere, too, but they’re slightly less common, perhaps in certain areas.
* R3: You’ll find these items through the proper channels (other collectors!), not as common “on the street”, but fairly common on the internet.
* R4: Things get a little harder here, as a title rated as such could have a lower production run, or other factors that pull it out of the common bin, but nowhere near rare. You can start calling titles from herein UNCOMMON.
* R5: The hunt begins. Five are the kinds of item you have to look for, but definitely always in reach.
* R6: If you see a six or greater, at least one of us had a problem finding the title. You call this VERY UNCOMMON if you so desire, or BORDERLINE RARE.
* R7: RARE. A true collectible! Sevens and up represent the “hardest” 25% of the games listed in this Guide.
* R8: We consider these the items you’ll never find by chance (except in those legendary lucky finds!). There are a few eights in this Guide that we haven’t gotten our grubby little hands on... yet.
* R9: The centerpiece of a collection make up the nines. If you ever hope to BUY one of these, prepare to write out a big check.
* R10: Not only is this the centerpiece of a collection, but a ten also means you could be holding a one-of-a-kind (certainly one of no more than a dozen or so) there - kind of like owning a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, or Issue #1 of DC’s Action Comics.

We include the scarcity ratings to address the need for a rating system across platforms. What we found out through many letters, e-mails and other excellent feedback was that prices provide a good baseline but were not addressing how difficult a cartridge might be to “find”. So we’ve done both for you. The scarcity rating provides a very simple one to ten system (a longtime DP tradition). “1” is the common doorstop. “10” is the item your friends want to steal.

Note that a "2" for the Atari 2600 should be just as easy or hard to find as a "2" on the Neo-Geo system. It's all relative across systems, not within them.

I checked Valkyrie Profile and that came up as a 3 in their database. Intelligent Qube is a 5 and Panzer Dragoon Saga is a 6. They really don't have a lot of data on the current gen, but a lot of the games j-fever posted would likely come up as R2-R4. They're still somewhat common on the internet. Take a look at some of the items rated R8 through R10. Some of that stuff is very limited, or for the R10s, prototypes.

There is a very sharp difference between rare and expensive. Any given time I can find a complete Valkyrie Profile or Suikoden 2 on ebay, on the other hand can't say the same thing about bomberman 64 second attack complete all. However, bomberman 64 second attack complete is only between $30-40 on ebay.

This is a cool list. Maybe Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (PS2) as uncommon? It goes for about $20-25 and not the easiest thing to find.

I updated the list with J-fever's post...I agree with people that digitalpress.com is a great place for non-current gen games.

Other than that, we have most of the current gen rare games on the list.

If there any current gen games not on the list, keep em coming and I'll check on them. (Promise!)

I have added the following titles to the list:

PS2
Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 ~ Rare is some places $10 and up on ebay
Metal Gar Solid 2 Substance ~ Rare is some places $15 and up on ebay
Jurassic Park Operation Genesis ~ Rare is some places $30 and up on ebay
Aliens Vs Predator Extncton ~ Rare is some places $17 and up on ebay
Tail of the Sun is one of the rarest PSX games in the US (got a 7 at Digitpress).
Really? Huh and I had that one too . . .
Caslevania Chronicles for PSX is 50 on ebay and there is still almost 2 days left.
I've never heard of Chronicles. Is it just a collection of previous 8 & 16-bit games?
I've never heard of Chronicles. Is it just a collection of previous 8 & 16-bit games?
It was a remake of the old XS68000 game (I probably butchered the system name) that came before the NES version, if I recall correctly. It includes the old version, and then a version done with remade sprites, so two games for the price of one really.

It retailed for 19.99 when it came out, and there were only 10,000 copies printed. There were rumors that if this did well, there were going to be more in the series done and remade, hence the Chronicles on the back of it.

Apparently this flopped and Konami never proceded onward - I felt they should have just picked a better first game that was more sought after, like the Turbo Duo Castlevania, Dracula X.

Yet another waste of time ... who knows how many of these topics have been made and faded away, which is most likely going to be the fate of this one as well.
Ah, cool. Thanks for the info.
No problem... it's really quite decent.

If you're a Castlevania fan, you'd really enjoy it. The price hasn't gone up much beyond 20 dollars new... I think on Ebay you can get them from anywhere from 25-30 brand new (or that used to be the case, not sure if it changed).

Even with the low print run alot of copies weren't sold... it was sad too, because the people behind the project wanted to do either Dracula X or Castlevania III depending on sales.

Castlevania Chronicles is more or less a remix of the first one and the X6800 version. Its main imporvement is a CD/remixed audio score. While rare it's not really worth collecting IMHO and I'm one of those 300 something games game collectors. However you can pick it up for $20 and if you're a Castlevania fan it's worth it.

I know this is going to be shocking to you but one of the rarest and most expensive games not yet mentioned is the Disney Mix Dance Dance Revolution for PSone. Sealed ones are going for $120+ and it's next to impossible to find used locally. Of course, since it's rare, I have one :D.

I just got the Street Fighter Collection 2 last week, it was $25 at Gamestop and might as well have been new. While really great to have the 3D0 SF2 Turbo I liked so much again, the original hasn't held up well and Alpha 2? YECH! The PS2/Xbox Anniversary set is better since it has Third Strike, better on Dreamcast though.

Other notables in the rare and good category, PSone stuff, Einhander, Bust a Groove/Move, Devil Dice and though it wasn't much of a game Motor Toon GP really was a neat tech demo for the PSone.

Im back, finally woohoo!!! my comp crashed 3 or 4 months ago and Ive missed you all so much, and I'm just glad to be back! blah blah!

I heard the original res evil games are rare, is that true?
