The Second Annual Post Your Desktop Thread

Took a while to get everything where I wanted. Thanks Tiphireth for the help.

Those flyout menus in ObjectDock are great.

For those who've tooled around with Vista, is there a specific directory where the icons are stored? I was just doing a search on my Vista drive and I couldn't come up with it.

Certainly, glad you got it workin'. :D

My desktop got a makeover thanks to Tiphireth ..

p.s. Question - I downloaded the Vista Inspirat theme from crystalxp.net and now stuff within my Firefox browser looks all weird (i.e. new font, smaller text, etc) and I'm not talking about themes. Anyone know how to get it back to normal?

Damn, I just spent the past hour and a half messing with icons. Tried out Icon Packager, but I couldn't get any packages to work, so I individually changed every icon within the program. I'm spending so much damn time just trying to get my XP to look like Vista.

Those last two wallpapers you put up are quite nice, thespillcanvas. Are there original images without any text, just the raw picture file?
I downloaded the Vista mprint Theme...but how do I make it actually work? There is no setup file...
Are those the ones in the '.msstyles format'? For those I put the file and its accompanying folder in this directory: 'C:\Windows\Resources\Themes'

You can then click on the 'msstyles' file and it should change it over to that Windows style.

I think I spent a better part of the day just messing with Windows. I'm pretty happy with it now, but it's still not quite Vista. Going on pure aesthetics alone, Vista (and it's derivative theme copy-cats) has become my favorite OS.

And thanks for the wallpaper link. I love landscape stuff, but despite the alterations, his gallery has some interesting stuff in it.

I did that...nothing has changed. It still only lists 'Windows Classics' and 'Windos XP'

Oh, and looking around for a Firefox Vista theme, I stumbled upon this: Vista Transformation Pack.

Screen grab here.
Download here.

Anyone tried it? Apparently it takes care of everything with the installer. Or do you need another program package (WindowsBlind) for it to work?

I'd give it a try, but I don't want all my changes to get messed up.

I used Icon Packager to change all the icons in Windows automatically, do I need to go and save my settings separately, or is that something handled by Windows? Say if I delete Icon Packager or install that program above, are those settings tied to the program or Windows?
I did that...nothing has changed. It does for me, wish I knew the technicalities behind it, but I'm just learning myself.

Just looking at mine, I've still only got those two themes you listed, plus two Aero ones, that I don't use. The one I'm currently using is in the 'Themes' folder, but doesn't show up in the 'Display Properties>Appearance' window. Yet, it's still up. I'd bet Tiphireth has the answers.

When you run UX Multi-theme patcher for the first time, it patches your registry so that Windows recognizes .msstyles as default skins. It lets them run as the normal XP skin would with no memory/cpu usage, instead of having to run apps such as windows blinds that hog resources. Just save them where ever you want, and double click them. It'll open the display properties popup where you can apply it.

I usually change wallpapers about every half hour or so, but I haven't seen a reason to change lately.

Not sure if I've ever ran that, but I'm having no problems with my styles yet, so perhaps I have.

If you downloaded crystalxp, than you ran the patcher. CrystalXP is just a ton of things packed together, all can be had seperatly.
If you want more visual styles by the way check out deviantart. Link.

Oh, I never downloaded crystalxp. Might wanna try doing that. My resources are probably being used up with the theme changes I did.

Okay, I did change it to now you actually see my desktop. Not wallpaper.

I'm Michelle hopping. It's usually a bit more cluttered than that, but I'm in the process of moving, haven't yet, but am... so, less stuff. Boring, ain't it? Ha, everything's just hidden away in folders.;)

CrystalXP is very meh, in my opinion. It's nothing but a bundle/starter pack really, everything can be downloaded seperately. You did run the patcher though, as you have that Vista skin, which is a visual style.

If your resources are being eaten up, it's because of Konfabulator (Yahoo Widgets), and Objectdock. VS's do not use any resources.

Vista RC1 and Office 2007 Beta TR FTW!
Now if I can only find a utility that does that cool Vista Window Switching thingie.

I did and then I took it off. While I like the visual styles of Vista and I'm sure it has some great performance leaps and utilities, I've become so used to XP now and I'm not willing to change over just yet (along with it still being a Beta and costing so damn much once it releases among other things). Still love my OS X though.

It's nice to have a different look to XP though even if it's stolen from another OS.

CD Art Display.

If you don't have the cover art for the albums, the app will search for it and save it.

Enjoy. :)

What a sweet program! But for fucks sake, I can't figure out how to change the skin. Can you help me out? I already downloaded and opened the one I want.

EDIT: Nevermind, I took a little ride to the pharcyde on the wrong side of the SHORT BUSSSS.

Thanks for the link, though. This is such a neat program.
Does anyone know a good, free Windows skinning program, like Litestep or WindowsBlinds?
uxtheme.dll
I tried that, but it doesn't like 64 bit edition at all. Neither does Litestep.
Hmm... have you tried StyleXP? It's similar to WB.

StyleXP requires you to pay after 20 days. :(

Modified wallpaper stolen from /wg. Was originally pink from the ''love" thread, but I didn't like it so I made it blue-ish.

If you ever feel the need to search for wallpapers, try here- http://orz.4chan.org/wg/imgboard.html Keep in mind it can be NSFW.

I had to go through my pics to find something that would work now that I've rotated my screen 90 degrees. This one, taken last year in Mexico of a nativity scene, seemed just about perfect for the holiday season.

Used a photo my Dad took of some property he bought in Tennessee.

Anybody have any idea on how to make WMP11 silver? I hate the fact it doesn't match my toolbar.

my current desktop:

Visual Style is XPMC Induztry Compact
Wallpaper is "Cosmic Dawn" from Digital Blasphemy
Trillian Skin is T3 Night Rider
Other apps running in the background: Juice, ZBoard (for my MERC keyboard I bought), Winamp, NOD32, and Rainlendar
To JMCC and mikeohara .. where are those calendars from? Are they widgets from the konfabulator engine?
mine is Rainlendar.
