gamers who grew up in the 80's/early 90's have at least played 1 or 2 shoot em up games both in the arcades and home consoles. i have been re-living my childhood days of wasting all my lunch money playing 1942, Chopper, etc.. etc.. on the original Xbox (mame :whistle2:#!).

anyways, its very clear that our favorite shmups might end up on Xbox Live Arcade. evidence of this is the recently announced 1942 HD!

Ikaruga is also on its way sometime for XBLA (though this is a recent game, the developers were known for one of the best games for the saturn, Radiant Silvergun). there were rumors that Raiden IV could hit the Dreamcast last year.. seems pretty crazy, but the last few dreamcast releases had been indie SHMUPs.

im still trying to remember the shmups i played back in the day. alot of them im sure was also released in the U.S. but i couldnt figure out what the titles were since the one i played was in japanese.

which arcade or console shmups did you play? post screen shots if you can!

I remember playing Blazing Lazers in the little thrift store down the street from my friend's house. About a year ago I finally tracked down a complete copy of the game for my TG-16. Needless to say, I was quite thrilled!

My all time favorite, one that I would hope would turn up on the VC is Bangaio. It was released on the N64 and Dreamcast. There's a DS version, but it's more of a puzzler than an action title.

So what do you guys prefer, horizontal or vertical scrollers?

MUSHA
THUNDERFORCE V
INSECTORX - currently readdicted to this game and I will beat it on hard
SUPER RTYPE
Legendary Wings - underated IMO

Zero Gunner 2 for Dreamcast is one of my all-time favorites.

Besides that, basically anything made by treasure....

Yeah, Bangai-O on the DC was very fun! A Wii VC release of the import Japanese N64 version is not out of the question (especially with the DS version confirmed for US release).

I don't really have a preference for vertical or horizontal shooters. As long as the game is good and there's lots of stuff to blow up, I'm happy :D

Thinking back, the Genesis had some really good shooters. Some of the ones I really enjoyed were:

Phelios
Gaires
Thunder Force III
Insector - X

I never played MUSHA and now regret it as it has become very expensive to acquire.

MUSHA is the BEST 2d shooter on the 3rd generation of consoles. The music is amazing. it's better than alexay better than thunder force. I regret having sold it for 20 bucks though and Now I find out that it's the most rare genesis game ever and the prices are 100-150 on ebay. I saw a whole bunch of them at gamestop 5 years ago for ten bucks :(

Look no further than the TG16/PCE system:

Blazing Lazers, Air Zonk, Soldier Blade, Gradius, Parodius, R-type on HuCards.
Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Super Air Zonk on CDs

Plus many more...

I really want to play the Raiden games. I played one Raiden game at an arcade in Vegas and thought it was a lot of fun. I picked up Raiden 3 at Hastings for $5 a couple weeks ago. Now I am trying to find a cheap complete copy of Raiden Project for PS1 however the high ebay prices are scaring me away. Oh well, maybe someday at a pawn shop I will find a copy.
