The Sims 3

I put some time into over the weekend. It's certainly addicting, but not entirely satisfying. I feel like it takes forever to get anything done. My main complaint is with the speed settings. It's really annoying when you're trying to speed past a day at work or a night's sleep and it constantly changes on it's own.

Biggest gripe from the wife

no pets

no weather

Each of these are screaming expansion.... I told her to wait 2 months, I'm sure there will be.

pretty sad really.

i'm feeling the addiction. the story progression finally makes it worth living through, since it was always a pain in sims 2 to have a teenage lover, then when you hit adult you can't go out anymore because they didn't age with you.

Neither pets nor weather were present in Sims 2 at launch either. It usually took ~ 6 months per Sims 2 expansion pack, so depending on which they find to be the priority, it'll take at least a year.

As for Sims 3, I'm kinda mixed about it.

I love the new traits system, as well as the town growing up with you (toggleable). It can make it hard to find sims if they die/fall in love and move out (if they're not your active household), and it's nice you can set the length of time for Sim lives in options.

However, I have some gripes with the job system. You no longer acquire work clothes as clothes you can wear everyday, as long as someone in that house as had that job at one point. You can only wear work clothes if you're currently in that job. Job rewards are a lot more subtle now, too. There's no real gifts in many of the career tracks, it's mostly just new interactions/new effects that are of questionable use.

Well I guess that settles it then, I'm holding out 'till the "Get stranded on an island and never need another game ever" pack where they include all the expansions.

I agree, if you're not a die hard fan and can wait.... I'd wait till they released the Deluxe edition.

Another MAJOR gripe of Sims 3.....

ONLY 2 towns, and they are predetermined lots. No new lots, no HUGE lots, no custom towns.

I really thought they would have wised up and decided to merge the two freaking games already ... Sims City and Sims....

With as much as the expansions can get, I thought at least it may be possible out of the box.

And there are a few bugs that need to work out.

And you can't build round or curved pools, not even a slant... wtf.

So far, the wife stated that they improved on things that needed, but when steps back on everything else.

she's hopeful that expansion packs come out soon to complete this game.

definately the buggiest of all the base games. To get used to everything I created a fat, ugly sim named Evil Bastard who has all mthe bad traits. (sloppy, insane, mean, loser, and I forget the other) His neighbor was a single military women so of course evil instinct was to befriend her and ipregnate her as much as possible leaving her a single mom of many ugly children (that will teach her to work for the military plotting against me!)

Unfortunately after the second pregnancy she kind of just dissapeared. It still shows her as owning the next door home, but she never enters or leaves and if I try to visit I just end up standing their waiting for her forever. I did get a good laugh before she vanished though, as after the first child was born she would leave him on the floor to sleep instead of buying a crib. Especially funny while he was lying on the floor crying while Evil Bastard knocked her up again.

I do like the story progression option for the rest of the town. New roomies move in, families age, etc.
Whats annoying is that my young adult sim's hottie adult lover (also his boss) reached elder lol, and she still wants the sweet loving. :)

comparing the character models/animations to the second game... any "real" improvements that make them stand out from the Sims 2?

This game should have been backwards compatible with the expansions, so we can have out beloved Pets...but this is EA we are talking about so it ain't happening without spending $$$$

I'm playing with max setting at resulution of 1920 x 1200 and the graphics are quite an improvements. Itt shows a bit more on the environments than the sims themselves as I think they are trying to avoid making them look too real. There is a lot more you can customize on the sims themselves. My Evil Bastard is really fat, not just a pot belly like in sims 2

Maxis has really seemed to fix whatever resource issues they had with Sims 2 + Sim City 4. Both of those games don't run very well on my new PC, and The Sims 3 runs beautifully, everything is just very smooth and looks good visually. I have one small complaint visually with the shadows, it looks a bit odd, but it's because the sun actually moves from one side to the other during the day.

Amazingly, this runs very well on my new $400 Toshiba laptop (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114611) when all the settings are turned down low. I checked systemlabs/CanYouRunIt?, and it doesn't meet minimum requirements, due to my CPU speed, but I haven't had any problems. I still think the game looks great, and I hope to be able to check it out on my dad's nice computer, if I can get it to start. Whenever I launch it, it looks like it starts and then goes to a black screen and boots me back to the desktop. Oh well, everything's fine on my cheap laptop, and my sister is able to play it on her HP laptop with the settings about where mine are. Funny, since her computer cost a hell of a lot more than $400 when she got it a year or two ago.

Love the game so far. I haven't found any shortcomings with the thing. It's infinitely better than The Sims 2, and I've played and loved The Sims franchise for almost a decade now.

The game is good, but I seem to have the opposite problem then everyone else. The time goes to fast... and before I put cheats on and I had to work - it was a pain in the ass. I'd get up and it would say, "Car picking you up in an hour" and it would take "me" 40 minutes to get out of bed and I couldn't eat breakfast...

Come to think of it... sounds exactly like my real life. Hmm...

LOL...haven't played it too much since my install today, but it seems ok so far....already had to use cheats for money, can't have my sims living in a dumpy house..hehe

I've never played a SIms game before, is this the best to start with? I can get it off amazon for $35 shipped, so I'm pretty tempted

Money cheats? Are you guys serious? Money is so easy to get in this game, I'm legit swimming in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It's easy as pie as Moxio said. In like 10 hours played, my main character is making $525/hr. Bringing home 2k+ day means you don't really ever have to worry about being poor.

Best way to get money: paint and write. Seriously. Get your paint skills to 10 and your writing skills to 10, and you will be raking in money like crazy. You get tons through book royalties every week (my dude is getting dozens of thousands), and if you "mass produce" large masterpiece paintings, they easily sell for $4K. If you really want, you can paint like 4 or 5 every day and THEN tell me if you still need money cheats.

I finally find the Sims 3 thread and it's dead. I have not been able to stop playing pretty much since it came out. Probably because I got into legacies which is a decision I may or may not regret in the future, but for now I'm having too much fun.

Loving Late Night except gaining celebrity status is way too easy. Plus I got obsessed with Beau :p
