The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.
Does anyone else have the problem of having a hard time turning down the Steam midweek/weekend deals when they are a great deal even though you have like 60 game backlog on your Steam account already?
That would be a great question of the day.

I always look at the sales and say, "Man, I want it." But then I have to ask, "Will I actually play this?" The answer is usually no. Of course when the answer is yes, I'll buy.

I never turn down a great deal if it's a game I want. :) I expect I will die with some of these games unplayed, but I can live (??) with that.

My answer normally is, "Yeah I'll play it, in about a year when I get through the other games." That number used to be a couple months but the end of the year sale really tagged me.
Does anyone else have the problem of having a hard time turning down the Steam midweek/weekend deals when they are a great deal even though you have like 60 game backlog on your Steam account already?
Man, I have stacks of games. I use to be the type of gamer that would not move on to another game until it was ENDED. If it had MP I had to be at in the 'good' rank.

Now, I got stacks and stacks and stacks of games...most of them are free but I have a lot of retail games that I got for xmas that are not even out of the box yet.

I have 22 fighting games on my PC from japan that came out last year...I only got to play 5 of them.

So I am saying no to every STEAM deal...I even said no to the xmas stuff.
I really want to get in to this game because the concept is really cool but I feel, how would I say, an extreme amount of 'pressure' when I play. I often get this in games with multiple endings and choices. I always feel like I'm doing something wrong. The only games I don't feel this are Bethesda games for some reason.

And wait a minute, there's a tank...?
The game isn't as non-linear as you make it sound, so don't let that discourage you from finishing it. What should discourage you is the fact that while it is a brilliant premise for a game it snowballs into absurd cliche fairly quickly. I'm not sure whether it was a rush job and things were cut to fit a deadline or space constraints, or if the writer(s) simply couldn't sustain their efforts.

My definition of tank controls is any scheme that makes character movement into a chore rather than something at least semi-intuitive.

Finally, in regards to the FLAC/mp3 mini-debate, if you're listening to music with a significant amount of percussion (i.e. most rock music), then even high quality mp3 compression is inferior and noticeable.

And oh, the interaction between backlogs and current purchases; yeah, it's a bitch. I started using The Backloggery, but even that's, like, work.

No updates today.

And I too have a hard time saying no to great steam sales. I have been getting better afer the Christmas sale though. I cant justify buying anymore games unless I either REALLY want them and the game is under $5 or if its something I think wont get any lower.

Well, it really depends on what you are asking. I have no problem jumping on a great sale, regardless of backlog, if it is something I have been interested in and I do not think it will be any lower down the road (at least not by the time I can get around to playing it). At least that is how I viewed it up to and during the Steam sale.

With the new year, I have told myself to not do this, as it costs me lots of money in the long run. By the time I would get around to some of these games I purchased cheap (several of the holiday steam sales come to mind), there will be other things either on sale or that have my attention, meaning I could have just saved my money. I have about $40 worth of stuff I bought during the Steam sale that I wish I had not bought, but there is nothing I can do about that now.

Can you change your STEAM ID? Not your name that others see...The actual ID?

Edit - NVM - Your numeric SteamID and Steam Account Name can not be changed. Your Steam Community ID can be changed at any time in your Steam Community settings, under "Edit my SteamID page".

Been playing a lot of Dystopia, free source mod. I'd love to see Valve pick these guys up and make a full game (Not that it isn't good enough as is)

Yeah, you can change your community ID, I think you can't change your log in ID and your log in ID is the one you need to use when asking for passes and stuff. Which is why mine never works.

Yeah I was looking more for the actual STEAM ID. When I came on to STEAM someone already had the name Megazell so I went with another name I am known by. Now, it says that STEAM ID Megazell is gone but I can not register it or change my ID into it. My community name is Megazell but my ID is Santo Malo.

Anyway, it's not a big deal. I am actually giving my STEAM account away. Going to erase all pertinent data from it.

Xfire is good enough for me. I've been playing Indie titles and Free games 90% of the time.

I have a Day of Defeat: Source and 2 Killing Floor guest passes for anyone that's interested. PM me. They expire on 1/26 and 1/27, respectively.

Yes, I realize it's a little late to send it.
So no more L4D for you?
Yeah. I love L4D but L4D 2 was a fail for me.

I am helping some friends of mine work on a L4D like mod for Nexuiz.

I bought Titan Quest and Company of Heroes during a weekend deal an I haven't really touched any of those; a couple of quest in TQ, a few levels on CoH. Crysis Warhead got started, but hasn't been finished yet, and I haven't had time to do justice with Torchlight, Zeno Crash, or STALKER either.

With a backlog of games already (hell, I'm just getting around to playing Assassin's Creed after picking it up for $5 from the D2D 5 year anniversary sale), if it's not a bitchy deal or a game that's been in my radar for weeks/months, I'll try to stop myself from buying anymore games, deal or no.

Steam cloud is a service that backs up your game saves on steams servers so even if you uninstall a game or play it on a different PC you wont lose your data/have to transfer it between PCs.

So for instance Torchlight has it and its extreamly usefull because it means you can play primarlily on your PC but then if the game is installed on your PC and you play it through steam while online on your laptop your save games will still be there even though you switched machines.

Man, I have an old habit that pretty hard to break that I got from the early days of PC gaming.

When I was playing a game that had a save file and settings (I don't use a mouse so I need my KB settings a certain way and my gamepad)...After playing a game and closing it out...I would retrieve the save file and email them to me.

To this day I have my email folders for games broken down by genre and game title...I have save files going back to 1989...LOL

So STEAM is awesome but I always have my backups!

I wish ALL games had Steam Cloud support. If it were up to me, I'd prioritize games with low system requirements. I have a desktop for gaming and an old, underpowered laptop I use when traveling. I bought a number of old school adventure games in the latest sale, and I'd be playing those a lot more NOW if I knew I could just pick up where I left off the next time I'm trapped in an airport with a 4 hour layover.

Aside from ALL the games (Which would be impossible for some like Far Cry 2 which my save folder was 500mb or the Bethesda games which get bloaty) I'd like to see it in Borderlands. There's only 1 save file per character after all.

This. Start with smaller games and work your way up to the big ones. I totally understand stuff like Far Cry 2, Crisis and other games released in the last few years that both have large saves or wont run on most lap tops not having steam cloud support. But stuff like Chains, Popcap games, Trials, majesty, civilization etc etc steam cloud support would be such a nice feature since many of us do play these games on multiple set ups.

I'm surprised ID hasn't added some support. They seem to be keen on showing the flexibility of their engines to run on everything.

I wish the Half Life games and Portal had it. I was kind of shocked when I read the store page for them and saw that they did not have any support.

I am currently not concerned with gaming cloud services because I have a single desktop pc, I game at home and that's it. Might change, but not in the foreseeable future.

See untill just today I was in the same camp. However iv been thinking of getting a new PC which if I did I wouldnt have to worry about transfering saves over for steam cloud supported games. It also means when I go to family members houses during the holidays and its horribly boring I can sneak on someones PC, install a small fast game like Chains and blow some time.

Speaking of Steam Cloud support...

Two highly anticipated titles from SEGA, Aliens vs. Predator and Napoleon: Total War will ship with Steamworks support at retail and online, including among other features, Achievements, Matchmaking, Leaderboards, Stats, and Cloud. Aliens vs. Predator will ship on Steam and at retail in mid-February. Napoleon: Total War will ship on Steam and at retail in late February.

This is fantastic news as now I can wait for some retail deal (target clearance for example. I know a lot of people got FEAR 2 there for under $10) and still be able to have it on steam.

Honestly I'm surprised not to see some kind of save game manager of sorts, that would scour and collect your saves and back them up.

Cloud is nice, but unless you have multiple pcs to visit, it's only a nice niche and that's it.

I love cloud since I have two laptops I like to game between, although the 2nd only plays casual or older games. Torchlight addition was the best thing, so happy to see that was added. But really any games I would appreciate it.

Remember it's not only useful if you have multiple computers, but if you reformat your computer etc, you'll have your saves if you forget to back them up! I totally forgot to backup my Portal game save after a reformat and so I don't bother playing it anymore lol My torchlight, MW2 are all in tact even though I did a copy of those.

I like it just in case I have to wipe my hard drive or delete a game or games to make some room, I know that my saves will be redownloaded when I install the game again. Some kind of saved game utility would be sweet too, so I didn't have to look through my game folders hoping I got all of my saves backed up and not missing any parts that might be needed.

I back up my hard drive regularly, so that's another reason I'm mostly apathetic. It is a nifty feature though, I'll admit.
Midweek madness Deal is Psychonauts for $2

http://store.steampowered.com/app/3830/
fuck yeah! I was waiting and waiting for this during the Holiday sale and it just never went on sale! I was hoping for a $5 sale in the next month or 2! At $2 that just freaking made my day. I think ill buy my little brother a copy too. Anyone know if the game has sub title options. His speakers are borked which really does make Psychonauts much less fun.

Whoa, nice! I'm all over this one. I wouldn't have even noticed this if not for this thread.

By the by, this is the third copy of Psychonauts I've purchased, perhaps to appease my guilt for not buying it at full price when it first released.

I bought a cheap PS2 copy, got ripped off on an Xbox Live downloaded copy, and now have this Steam copy. Looking forward to playing it on Steam with an Xbox 360 controller. :)

I want to pre-order BC2, but since there is some time until it comes out I'm sure they will do some sort of pre-order discount or possibly a 4-pack like they did with Bioshock 2.

2k Games has done 4 packs before Bioshock 2, but with EA...

What you should first see is whether or not EA has a history of putting up a 4-pack deal. I don't think they have, so it might be unlikely that they will do a 4-pack. With the new 4x4 squad death match, it could be totally possible, I just don't know if it would be worth waiting for (especially with the beta coming out soon).

See the majority of betas I have participated in for games like BC2 are just full of jackasses so I rarely log into the beta at that point. I'll wait longer just to see if a deal does materialize.

Whoa! A sealed copy of the PS2 Psychonauts goes for over 20 bucks on ebay! Looks like my PS2 copy will be sold, thus giving me reason to buy it on Steam. Activating the Steam Purchasinator...Purchasing commencicon!

I'll gift a copy of Psychonauts (provided that it is still 2 bucks when you PM me) to the first person who can tell me where 'commencicon' comes from.

Nothing new in today's update but Mass Effect 2's availability. While I could care less about that game something tells me its availability is worth more to you then a dozen steam sales!

If you could care less, than that means you care about it a bit!

What I've played of ME2 so far has been awesome.
