The Steam discussion topic! Joy and happiness, right here, folks.

So when I go to the pages for (free to play) Global Agenda or Forsaken World and click the "install" button... nothing happens. What gives? Other stuff installs like it's supposed to...

Do you or did you have those games already installed? I know for AVA I had to uninstall my original installation before STEAM install it's version. Not that they are different outside of where they are actually installed.

Anyone know how to find a list thru Steam of Source mods? I've noticed friends playing random mods (Pirates, Vikings, & Knights 2) but when I try to backtrack to a master list, I cain't find nuthin.

As far as I know there isn't an official list 'o mods anywhere. There are some (Pirates Vikings and Knights 2 being one of them) listed on Steam itself, the rest you just gotta dig up manually. Best bet would be poking around ModDB.

I'd post the links here, but the Steam website stupidly fails to update addresses when you modify search options. It took me longer just to write these instructions than it did to figure out where the list is.

 1. Go here
 2. Change "Games" to "Mods"
 3. Change "Action" to "Genre"
 4. Change "Category" to "Mods (requires HL1)" or "Mods (requires HL2)"

I'm pretty sure that's what you're talking about. You're welcome. ;)

Great job, dude!

So driving home, I hear on the news something to the effect of, "Today, video game company Electronic Arts has puchased Seattle, Washington-based company..." and I about shit a litter of kittens. It was PopCap that EA bought, and Valve is based in Bellevue. Christ!

ha! Thank God it wasn't Valve. Don't know what it means that they got PopCap, though. That might not be so good either. Or maybe it would be, I dunno. Seems like EA never does much for companies except eat their souls. I used to love Bullfrog and Maxis, and now they barely exist.

It probably just means PopCap games will be on Origin and not published on PopCaps website, and that we will be seeing PopCap games on Facebook. I doubt EA'd want to mess up the good thing PopCap has going on.

Yeah, you're probably right, I dunno. I guess I don't care that much about PopCap anyway. Though I have always hoped they'd make a cool puzzle RPG. :)

Just finished Lume. The game was short, the puzzles were at times obtuse, it wasn't always clear what the next step was, and the activation areas for some of the clicks was terrible (Ex: I knew I had to do something with the phonograph, but clicking on it did nothing -- had to click on the crank). Plus the game is only the first episode of the story, so it wasn't even a complete experience. The nicest thing I can say is that it cost me less than $2.50.

Anyone else who picked up Assassin's Creed Brotherhood from Steam, have you had any issues connecting to Uplay or the Multiplayer within the game? The launcher connects just fine to my Uplay account, but once I get to the game's main menu, it can't connect to Ubisoft's servers at all. I've followed their official guide to open up various ports within Windows/the router, but still nothing. Any ideas? I've been battling this thing for hours now.
Is STEAM currently down? I'm getting connection errors, tells me that I have no internet connection, which I do.
Working fine for me.

Hey guys, didn't want to start a new thread just for Civ so I thought I'd ask in here. I've been playing Civ Rev on the 360 and am beginning to want more depth. Long story short which Civ game would be a better buy, IV or V?

Civ IV is cheaper, has a lot of good mods, and a lot lower system requirements -- I've heard Civ V can get laggy towards the end of games because of all the calculations but have never played the game. I'd pick up Civ IV the next time it's on sale, and then if that's not enough for you go for Civ V.

My first playthrough of Civ V, I really noticed the slugglishness, even on my Dual-Core MacBook Pro (which has been more than adequate for most other games). It was also pretty buggy, crashing after 5 or 10 turns, so I had to increase my auto-save frequency to avoid losing all of my work. I know it was updated by Steam since I first played and that may have improved some of the problems, but I haven't tried it again yet so I can't say one way or the other.

I also have Civ III and Civ IV (another Steam sale) but I haven't played them yet. Might give III a shot next before trying V again.
Absolutely zero people on my list playing Brink free weekend right now. Maybe there's a bunch downloading...
The game was/is terrible. When it released, there was under like 1000 people playing after a couple days. TF2 does everything Brink does 100x better. I doubt people are going to care enough about a free weekend.

Thanks guys! I was leaning toward Civ IV. I played a buddy's copy of Civ V for about 5 mins and didn't have any impressions of IV, I just know there's no stacking troops on V. And its going to take me a while to get used to the full version of Civ as opposed to the little bit dumbed down version of Rev.

The Original rocket launcher for TF2 is almost worth the $40 the QuakeCon pack cost on its own. Bonus: Tons of awesome Bethesda/iD games.

It's such bullshit. How does Steam prevent you from reaching customers with patches and DLC? Last I checked there are thousands of games on Steam that do that just fine.
Just a tactic to drive business to Origin, but so transparent and flimsy an excuse, yeah.
I don't even mind the Origin client. I just with they'd be honest and say "We want to increase sales on Origin" instead of using that lame excuse.

Steam is integrating a trading feature into the client. I forget if this is one of the End Times signs... It's in beta, so to install it, Settings > Account > Beta_Participation.

From what I have gathered, and don't take this as me saying it is definitely how it is. With the addition of free to play mmo's, Steam doesn't want to allow games to have in game DLC shops anymore because they want to make sure they get their cut of DLC sales. EA games for a while have had in game shops, and that is what EA and Steam are butting heads over, Steam wants money from DLC sales (and to have the DLC hosted on steam, like most DLC is). EA wants to continue on with their in game shop so that they get to keep 100% of the cash. Though I am sure wanting to get people off of Steam and onto Origin is a big part of it too. Origin seems nice to me, and I caved and pre-ordered Battlefield 3 because it looks really good. But I hate the DRM EA uses for their games not on steam. If they put Securom on Battlefield 3 (which they will) I am going to be mad. (don't know why this is coming as one big paragraph, I edited it twice for formatting and it keeps reverting the instant I hit save)

Ok I'm a total steam newbie and i just got my new and first gaming rig last night. I've already purchased Left 4 dead 2 on another computer and am downloading it currently to my new one. Why is it taking so long? I downloaded the humble indie bundles just fine. I have a dsl connection (don't know how fast) and I want to know if this is typical of games downloaded off steam? It's making me worry about my new laptop :/
What's a normal download time for a game like l4d?
Depends entirely on your internet connection, before I moved I downloaded at around 200-400kbps would take ages to download L4D2. Now, my new internet connection I generally get around 3 mbps, and it is nice.

Speaking of downloads, I've got slow DSL too and wasn't able to download Brink in time for the free weekend.

Download has been "suspended" but I can't seem to stop it entirely. Any advice?

So are we going to make a separate thread for this trading beta? I'd like to trade some of the games I don't like for other games and here seems like a good spot to set those up.

You do realize you can only trade games that you have gift copies of, right? You cant just trade any game in your library.
