I feel this is 100% accurate. People have gotten hit during a connection test with no profile signed in, no hard drive, attempting to get the Z: code to see if they'd been flagged.

If you decided you wanted an offline box for backups, you'd do well to change the FW and never take it online again.

Updating a BenQ is the easiest thing in the world. There are video tutorials on youtube by a guy that you can follow. It takes about 6 minutes.
