One thing i noticed today as I was buying some dvds is that the UK gets extended versions and better special editions of movies that are kind of bare bones versions here in the US. Here are a couple of movies that I found that prove my point

The Rundown US version

The Rundown (Welcome to the Jungle as its called in the UK) UK version

Alien Vs. Predator US version
AVP US

Dodgeball US version

I Robot UK version

The Day After Tomorrow UK version

Ocean's Eleven UK version

Garfield UK version

League of extraordinary gentlemen

Man On Fire

There are a couple of other dvds that are different but feeling to lazy to search for them right now. Even though some of these movies are bad we still deserve to get these editions of dvds here in the US

::EDIT:: Fixed the link to The Rundown US version

There are maybe one or two extra special features in the UK version of Dodgeball nothing really major i guess

Extreme Edition at the top of the UK version..

the US releases are generally the worst

terrible cover art with floating heads
no dts
crappy extras

if you buy dvds, imports are the way to go

You had to pay actual money for it? That would be screwing someone over.

i'm glad i rented that movie. I was sooooooooo disappointed. the part after the credits was extremly funny though.

UK releases are usually better (with much better cover art!) but we get them a lot sooner then they do.

Another thing I noticed is on Starsky & Hutch they have added a couple of special features like a commentary track and some featurettes

By actually having it released here.

Those countries generally get those movies awhile after us so they are bound to add a feature or two. And some of the time the special editions from places like the UK, which are first runs there, are often the SE double dips brought out in the US.

The movie i think we have gotten screwed over on here in the US the worst is Kill Bill. Everywhere else, no B/W, full blood and gore, here, it gets toned down, with very few special features.

I think the reason we get screwed is that many of the features are saved for future editions (usualy released a few months after the regular versio comes out) - Dawn of the Dead, Hellboy, etc

I'm guessing the Kill Bill movies will get at least one more version before it's all said and done. I can't imagine Tarantino excepting the ones released here as the final DVD editions of Kill Bill. Because of this, I have held off on buying them until we get the "real" versions.

JAPAN gets this:

Yeah it sucks, but i mean come on... BoooHooo. We miss out on one more commentary by someone who i don't really need to hear from or we don't get a snapshot of some douchebag's napkin drawing concept art design.

Ok so not everything is so trivial. There are a few making of documentaries that i would like to see. They're probably just waiting to release this stuff to the US in "special super deluxe mega size editions." It's just another way to get us to spend more money to buy the same product multiple times!\

Don't give in to the pressure! Sell all your electronics and go live on a hippie commune! That'll show those execs who's in charge!

Yeah, but I want the creepy robot head ;)

Also, I guess they are coming out with 2-disc edition of I, Robot, Day After Tomorrow & Man on Fire

As was already said, the problem is that Americans have shown that they're stupid enough to buy the same movie 3 or more times. As long as people keep buying the special-edition, the super-special-edition, the mega-ultra-special-edition, the platinum-mega-special-super-edition and more, the studios are just going to keep churning out releases that are deliberately kept incomplete so they have something more to put in the next version.

Oh, and for the sweet love of God, DON'T BUY iROBOT! Those fuckers desecrated the good name of Asimov and don't deserve a penny.
