This time next week we'll all be hitting the sack after more than 24 hours straight of playing.

or bitching because they are sold out everywhere.

or bitching because they are so high on ebay.
Bring a thermos and a tent and set up shop at midnight.
Midnight? Not anymore. :\ These days people start at like 5pm the previous day. Here in NY just to get Kingdom Hearts BBS 2 days early people got on line with lawn chairs while the sun was still out the previous day.

I'd say it will be a mix but don't forget the biggest one....

"(Insert retailer) screwed up my pre-order and I'm out of luck."
7am? At Best Buy?

Maybe 7am at Target. But not at Best Buy. Those folks will start lining up around 2-3am. If you want one from Best Buy you better start around midnight.
I'm not waiting outside of a store for 12 hours for a goddamn videogame console. If there's that many people at 7AM I'm turning around and just going back to bed.

Make sure not to wake the other residents of your nursing home whilst returning home. ;)
7AM? No offense, but it's no wonder you are a step behind in this process. Gotta put some effort in this late in the game. There will be 50 people lined up by midnight, I would all but guarantee that. There is no way you will get one showing up at 7AM
Depends on the store location and allocation. (clever, isn't that??)

I jumped in line at Best Buy around 2am for the Wii and a few people came an hour before they passed out tickets and got one. I'd say about 32 were there overnight for 40 available units.

What's with people trying to preorder today? Preorders have been universally sold out for weeks now, both in store and online. GS isn't even doing a midnight release simply because they don't have any walk up units. Walmart's lawaway preorders have long ended. At this point, the only preorder you might be able to find is if a random target still has some cards. And even those, it seems, require you to wait in line for the console.

Don't worry about getting out of bed then.

According to this thread, many wal marts still have layaways available, and nintendo themselves have said that gamestop will be receiving more units than their preorder allotment:
Moffitt: No, not at all. We’ve been through these processes before. We want product to be available on day one in stores throughout the country. If you line up or get there early, you should be able to get product on day one. GameStop has not sold all of their day one allocation. They’ve sold what they were making available for pre-sales. Those are two different numbers. Now, a lot of what we gave them, they’ve sold to pre-sales, but, like every retailer will, they’ve held some back so they have product on day one for consumers that come in the door.
We have said that we’ll have more Wii U units on store shelves in week one than we did for Wii in 2006. We’ll also have replenishment much more frequently during the holiday than we did for Wii. Having said that, though, we’re guessing there could be shortages. It won’t be there every day. Shipments coming in each week could sell very quickly.

FWIW I tried layaway at a local Wal-Mart late last week and the UPC/SKU was being refused in the system, though I don't know if this is company-wide.

It gets refused when they fulfill their allotment set aside for layaway pre-orders
It gets refused when they fulfill their allotment set aside for layaway pre-orders
Interesting. The lady behind the counter said they only had three pre-orders. I thought they'd set a higher cutoff number.

My Walmart said they only had a couple pre orders but had to cut them off nov 1st because that's what corporate had set. They wouldn't tell me any numbers though. Going to try and find out if my local best buy will have any for non pre orders. I was out of the country so I had no way to preorder unfortunately. I'm guessing some military folk have the same issue.

Son had fun playing the demo at GS but not in a hurry to purchase it. Worst case I'll get the Skylanders Giants which will hold him up until his birthday.
I guess they want to have some on the shelves, makes sense
I'm going back and forth in my head between midnight at Wal-Mart or an early Best Buy stop.

I'd rather wake up around 6AM to try to get to Best Buy around 7AM than have to wander around a Wal-Mart for the same 4 or 5 hours.

I found two demo stations over the weekend... the Wal-Mart one had a functional GamePad, but the HDTV wasn't working... the ToysRUs one fully worked, but only had videos.

Thank you, universe, for mocking me. I want to play some Rayman, dammit.

Oh well, at least I got to see the GamePad up close. Silver lining.

I hear ya, I had similar luck. Best Buy was one of the few retailers locally I came across that had a Wii U with a playable demo.

Now that there's press, more people are becomming aware, and Nintendo gets exactly what they'd hoped for..people whipped into a sold out new hot christmas present frenzy. If any hit the shelves, they'll vanish immediately, either by a speculator, or by a parent afraid of not seeing another one on the shelf.

And many people will settle for the lesser deal the basic unit offers, because they cannot locate the deluxe version.

I wouldn't worry about him.. the writing is already on the wall with reported potential shortages of product. He'll be eating a nice healthy serving of crow this time next week. ;)

Call me simple, but my plan is easy. Go to 24-hour walmart, and buy the thing soon as it hits the shelves?? There have NEVER been ANY product that released to stores ONLY in preorders, even your beloved iphone ships with stock for the store, seperate from pre-orders, still, if u live in a heavily populated area, u may be in luck as those stores get more than the regular stores.

Did you shop for a Wii when it was launched?

I did. I sat in a line in the garden center for about 4 hours, 3rd in line. By the time midnight arrived, the line was about 60-70 deep.. and this is in a rural town with a population of less than 9,000.

One by one, an associate walked us from the garden center to the back of the store layaway, where we purchased our systems. They then also had that assocoate escort us to our cars for added security, and they had either cops (or rent a cops) outside to make sure there were no issues.

They got in a grand total of 12 systems that night, and anyone who got in the line after about 8:30pm waited back there for nothing, and left empty handed.

They didn't do preorders back then, so that might resolve some of that issue, but I highly doubt there will be stacks of the deluxe units sitting around waiting to be picked up. Otherwise walmart wouldn't even be concerned about preorders at all, and managing the midnight launch.

Walmart will have white ones available on launch day; that's pretty much a given, since they didn't take any preorders on white ones. It's just a matter of how long you want/have to stay in line. For the PS3, in my area, I went out 29-37 hours before the stores opened (stores have different opening times), and the line at every single store (walmart, toys'r'us, target, wherever) was already full.

I'm gonna throw in my total newb opinion on it, but I agree, I don't think these will be quite as hard to find as the Wii was at launch. The first shipment will go quickly, there is no doubt of that, but I'm not sure there are as many people 'dying' to get their hands on a Wii U. Given that the Wii was released not so long ago in a galaxy not too far from here I think that people will look at the Wii U as an 'upgraded' Wii and not want to part with the $300-350 to grab one right out of the gate. The Wii U will have a lot to prove in terms of the support it gets before a lot of people start grabbing them up. That being said I'd say until at least early January they'll be sold out in most B&M stores, maybe some of the white units here and there.

Hell, I could be wrong, and I may be, I'm still getting one because I like the controller if nothing else.

If my Best Buy trip is fruitless I'll probably swing by Wal-Mart on the way home.

Who knows, I may get lucky.

If you don't have a preorder, you're going to have to camp out. I know you don't seem particularly thrilled with that idea, but its pretty much your only option. People are going to be lined up at Wal Mart, Target, etc. I'd suggest trying to talk with someone at your specific store about how they're going to handle it and plan accordingly. I was like 8th or 9th in line for the Wii when it launcheed, and got up at 3am. The Wal Mart was kind of out of the way, told us how many they had, and handed out numbers. If you wait till 7 am I can almost guarantee you you will not get a console.

If you're just flat-out unwilling to do this, you could try a big box retailer like Costco, BJ's, or Sam's Club. I worked at a BJ's for some time, and we got relatively unpredictable shipments of electronics. You could go at 7 am on launch day (and/or the first couple days after launch) and have a pretty good shot at getting a console if they have one. Like I said though, this is going to be unpredictable at best.

I have no idea if the wiiU will be hard to find next week. I just am sick of that guy trolling every single nintendo thread.

That's cool. As much as I'd like the thing on launch day, if I can't get a hold of one I won't be devastated or anything.

Does anyone know if the gamestop.com preorders are actually going to be able to be fulfilled or were they way over sold?

I preordered from gamestop.com with ups shipping and from bestbuy.com with instore pickup several months ago. I'm hoping that I'll get both and can give one to a friend but am fully expecting to be let down by both companies.

That's cool, best of luck to you if you try anyway. Just thought I'd give you a heads up. People do crazy things to get their shit.

I got charged for mine from GS.com. If you see a charge on you CC, it's a good sign.

Yeah, and to be honest it's the crazies that's making apprehensive to the camping out thing.

Can I call you maybe?

Someone asked about TRU. Just called and was told pre order ticket guarantees system so no need to arrive at store opening. When I asked what time they open he was not sure b/ thought it was 8 AM. TRU has had extended hours since Nov 1. Will call or stop by Walmart to see if early arrival is necessary.

Is there enough difference that I'm going to be hurt in the long run if I end up with a white model vs the black? I'm pretty patient but if it comes to a white one or waiting is it worth grabbing?
I got charged for mine from GS.com. If you see a charge on you CC, it's a good sign.
Well crab battle. I just checked my statements and was never charged. Solid. Oh well.

DAMN, I knew I shouldn't have but I played one of these at GS today. Rayman was beautiful and a fun game. Although I don't care for motion controls, HATE, I don't mind the touch screen integration that's neat although it completely sucks you out of the game when your guy just quits responding and you are like oh yea touch pad..

Waiting on ZombiiU but i'm definitely interested now. :)
Cost Captain has the deluxe for pre-order at $399.99. They are charging $50 more than normal, yet trying to make it look like a good deal by advertising an "MSRP" or $427.99.

Also seems like they can be a pain in the ass: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/CostCaptain

If anyone is still interested...

The included game alone makes the Black Wii U a better deal.
