CAGiversary!
Let me get this out there. I tip. Consistently twenty percent or more if the service is good. Being a waiter or waitress is a pretty hard job.
HOWEVER, I'm getting really tired of this ongoing "guilt-tip" (witty, huh?) that I keep getting subjected to at various self-serve style eateries. Now everyone, I assume, is familiar with this little game that goes on where the person at the register is really friendly, then they give you your change, and when you put it in your pocket instead of the tip jar they burn you with their aura. Usually when I say "Thank you" after this, they don't even say anything back.
Example # 1: I pick up a juice out of the fridge at the coffe cart and ask for a danish. She hands it to me. I put my change (
ing) naturally into my pocket. She aura burns me for 100hp of damage. I'm not kidding, she put this
ing frown on her dopey, "I'm 35 and work at a coffe cart" face. I wanted to tell her... you know... you make seven dollars an hour BECAUSE THIS IS A SKILLESS JOB. Not trying to bash low-level workers (I've had probably five jobs that fall in this category) but I never expected tips working at (a) a movie theatre or (b) the sandwich shop I worked at?? WTF?
Example # 2: Our local cafeteria style restaurant. You stand in line and place your order. Then you get buzzed by a pager and you go pick your food up. Then you walk over the counter and put your own accrouments on your sandwich. So why is there this little line on the receipt that says "tip".. because then I have to look like an asshole everytime I cross it out and put zero in there.
Tipping is supposed to earned when someone is serving you at a table, er no? And if you're going to argue this, then surely you should tip the guy at AVIS rentals or the guy that checks you out at the Supermarket?
It's just this attitude, like "I work at a shitty job, so you should have to subsidize me," that just drives me crazy. Those jobs are supposed to be stop-gap and if you elect to live the rest of your life in one of them, that's your decision. Better get used to shit wages, though.
