There can be only one. (Okay, so there wasn't just 1, ended up 3.) :)

So I decided to treat myself to a DS game this week and I need some suggestions on what to get. The last game I bought myself was The New Super Mario Bros. and I enjoyed that quite a bit. Having just bought a DS Lite I have had a renewed interest in playing the DS and need a new game.

There's been plenty of great games released since NSMB but I can choose only one. Here are some that I'm considering:

Castlevania: PoR - Great Bonus soundtrack btw, listening to it right now and its bringing back Castlevania memories. (usenet)

Elite Beat Agents - Always up for a good music game

Yoshi's Island 2 - Seems like more of the same (SMB), but its getting great reviews.

Final Fantasy III - RPG goodness

Clubhouse Games - Online Parlor games. Sign me up!

Mario Hoops 3v3 - Just because it has 'Mario' in the title :)

Children of Mana - Can't be all that bad, right?

Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime - Funtastical Zelda inspired game

Contact DS / Magical Starsign - More RPG funness.

Metroid Prime Hunters - Enjoyed the demo, loved Prime.

Scurge: Hive - See Above.

I'm sure there's more great games available, but this is quite a selection to choose from. Anyone who's played these games want to chime with an opinion and or review?

Thanks.

I'd go with FF3, seems like the most bang for your buck. I have Mario Hoops 3 on 3, and it's pretty meh. More novel than anything really. I also have Club House Games, which is very fun, but I'd pick FF3 over it because FF3 would be deeper. And those are the only two I own, so hope that helps a little.

I'd say either FFIII or PoR as those won't drop for a long time and will contain a LOT of gameplay.
...however, if you act quick you can probably pick up Magical Starsign from Amazon for $15+shipping...actually, Children of Mana is $15 right now too. You could get both for $30 and free shipping to boot.

Magical Starsign/Children of Mana seeing as how you could pick them both up for $30 off of Amazon right now! If you hate the internet though, ignore the fanboys with FF3. No DS game should cost $40. Elite Beat Agents is a blast. Mario Hoops 3 on 3 is purely a clearance title. Castlevania looks like pure unmitigated awesome. I love Contact, but it seems the rest of the world has cooled off on it. Clubhouse Games gives you the most bang for your buck. Scurge is on Amazon for a $20 and is a sleeper hit apparently. DQ is great, but a bit short. Prime is kind of eh. Buy it off of a CAG for cheap if you need it.

I'd say Yoshi's Island.
I would have leaned to EBA, but the music selection kind of sucks. FF3 also is probably no deeper than the NES original - while it may have been great at the time, this prettied-up version will probably still feel dated.
Starshine received mostly mediocre reviews, but Contact is supposedly good, if you're up for an RPG.

I am ready to be alone on this, but Mario Vs. DK 2: March of the Minis is amazing.

Yoshi's Island DS is -extremely- like the original, yet the few additions that are totally DS are awesome (especially the ability to scroll the Yoshi between the top and the bottom screens which lets you see a lot more of the level than previously).

StarFox and March of the Minis were my total favorites, I thought Mario Hoops was "ok." Yoshi's Island DS is what I'm playing now, and I love it for what it is, but if you just played through the NSMB, I'd recommend looking for a different type of gameplay.

Picked these up on an impulse because of the price. I'll probably never play them but at only $15 a piece I had to do it.

These don't count however, so I'm still deciding on which one from my list to get. I was at EB games yesterday and I tried Elite Beat Agents since it was on display. I didn't realize it had commercial music, the first level at least did. I had no idea what I was doing and I quickly lost after 5 seconds. However, it seemed like it could be a fun game.

After that playtest I think I've narrowed it down to two games:

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin and Elite Beat Agents.

FFIII looks like it will get boring fast, if it were VI (US 3) then I would be all over that.

Hmmm...

Well with Castlevania, you know what you're getting. It's going to be a good-great platformer. Plus, you might, might be able to snag the pre-order bonus from EB.

Elite Beat Agents on the other hand is a very different but equally good game. The DS demo of it sucks so try and get a hold of a copy from a friend. You'll know whether or not you'll like it if you play it for ten minutes. More then likely you will. It's not very long unless you play the harder difficulties.

Having not played PoR yet, I'll say get that if you can get the pre-order bonus. Otherwise grab EBA with the Gamer's Gift Card. My guess is that you'll see PoR on sale for about $24 through Target or CC within a month. I really think you'll enjoy both games, but my gut says EBA, especially since you've picked up two RPGs that will be time eaters. EBA is almost certainly a better pick up and play game then Castlevania. Again, it's like asking if you want a free $50 GC to Circuit City or Target. Depending on what you're looking for, you'll choose one or the other, but you'll be happy either way.

Yes.

Yes.

Yes.

Please buy this. I want it so bad. So very very bad.

Go with EBA. It's a blast, the song selection may seem kinda weak at first but the songs fit the game great. And it's isanely fun to play.

First pick: Castlevania, then Final Fantasy III. Those two should be the best on the list. Two of the best on the system. (Oh, and get Advance Wars if you like strategy games.)

Rocket Slime looks awesome and got great reviews, but I haven't unwrapped it yet so I can't vouch for it.

I HATE Metroid Prime Hunters. It's a bad FPS with a bad control scheme. It's not a real metroid game. At least rent it first IMO.

Haven't played Yoshi's Island 2, but I'll probably like it as it's by Artoon, and I love Blinx and Yoshi's Topsy Turvy.

I just started playing FF3 and I'm really enjoying it, but then again I'm not too far into it and the only other FF game I've played is 7. Castlevania is going to be a solid title, but if you don't have Dawn of Sorrows you could probably pick that up cheap.

MPH is a mainly multiplayer focused game with some balance flaws. The control scheme is one of the best I've seen on a console, and this is coming from someone who's been playing Quake since '97 on a mouse/kb. The touch screen allows real time aiming vs. analog sticks. The double tap to jump is sort of wonky, but really the control scheme is a step in the right direciton and can be a lot of fun online as long as you don't play against people who just go for health orbs that respawn faster than ammo. If you're looking for a Metroid Prime game along the GC version, then this isn't it, it's mainly a FPS to the likes of Quake.

I picked up FF3 with the Toys R Us coupon the other day and I'm enjoying it so far. I started enjoying alot more when i discovered the unlimited items trick which is given me plenty of potions, phoenix downs and money to buy armor and weapons. I'm really into this game, so much that I put down Phantasy Star IV indefinately to play it.

The Magical Starsign and Children of Mana I picked up from Amazon for $15 a piece I took back to Wal-Mart and picked up Elite Beat Agents and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.

So for a total invenstment of $50 dollars I picked up 3 of the best games on the system and my list. I should be content with my new DS Lite for the next few weeks at least.

Yay. :)

Just so you know, flipping games at Wal Mart is illegal and bragging about doing it is a faux pas on CAG.

Edit: I don't French :)

Normally I'd say yes to this, but with the news of DQ9 being exclusive to the DS, I'd have to disagree. Also, FF3 has never been released here and that alone would make it a great game to pick up, even at $40. If it was released back in the day, it would be $50, and with older graphics. This should be a simple purchase.

Once DQ9 comes out only for the DS, I'd be willing to pick it up at $40.

If the DS starts pulling in big name games like this in the future, you'll be seeing higher prices. Myself, I'd rather have a portable system with great big name exclusive games than sitting at home on a console. So I'm a bit biased.

EBA. And don't get FFIII just because it's on DS. I find FFV to be much more enjoyable, the gameplay is similar (job system and what not) but much more in depth.

Castlevania and here is why. Altough FF III is a awesome game, 6 months down the line FF III will still be avaiable anywhere you go. As for Castlevania DOS, it is a lot harder to come by (and isn't even on EB games's site) today. So get POR just because while there are other great games, you can gurantee your copy of POR today instead of trying to find one 6 months from now (because they might become DOS rarity).

Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime
Jump Ultimate Stars

Both games are insanely fun and easy to get into and with Jump Ultimate Stars having wi-fi, you can kick ass everywhere you go. My DS collection consists of over 20 games and if I can suggest the top two from those, it would definitely be Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime and Jump Ultimate Stars.

You'll probably get 12 hours of playtime out of Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime and 25 hours out of Jump Ultimate Stars without wi-fi. With wi-fi, I'd have to say somewhere between forever and infinite hours of gameplay. ^_^
