Okay as some of you may know I currently own an Xbox 360 which i bought less than a year ago. So my older brother is thinking about buying a PS3 so that we can own both of the current Gen systems. Okay so i have a few question:

* How many GB do you guys recommend? The console will be used for gaming only, No Movie/Music.

* Can you copy the game onto the console like with the xbox 360?

* Do you recommend to go for a brand new or used console?

* What games do you really recommend to get for the PS3? I'm not to familiar with the ps3 exclusives besides Uncharted and Twisted metal. But what games do you recommend? whether they're PS3 exclusives or not.

Thanks

1) I'd say a 250gb. You can always (easily) upgrade it later if you need more space.

2) No - some games install (some mandatory, some optional) but it's all dependent on the game & done through the game itself.

3) ALWAYS get game hardware new. All of the systems this gen have had issues, so don't run the risk of buying someone else's problem.

4) There are a lot of older games you can get cheap that are really good - both Uncharteds, both Ratchet & Clank games, both Killzones. If you like JRPGs, definitely look into Valkyria Chronicles. Oh, Yakuza 3 & 4 are great too. I'm just trying to hit the exclusives - I'm sure there are many I'm forgetting, these are just off the top of my head.

I have a 500gb in mine now and even that has been dwindled down to about 100 and I only do games. Granted I have almost 100 PS3 games, and another 100 downloadable games but still all the space is nice. For the average person though, the 250gb is probably just fine.

Some games have required installs and others nothing. Only select games allow a manual install and most of those are fighters.

New or used probably doesn't matter but I can definitely say go with the slim model.

As for games, God of War is a must if you like action games. You have 5 of those total counting the two collections. If you are a fan of stories, Heavy Rain literally blew me away. If you are one of the older school variety and still enjoy platformers then the Ratchet and Clank games are awesome. Metal Gear Solid 4 is pretty much a no brainer but definitely need to have played the others. Mass Effect 2 is awesome and so much easier to jump into on the PS3 as it has the interactive comic to get you caught up. Killzone 2 and 3 are great shooters. Resistance is too far behind however the first one is quite dated and the 2nd is so much different from the other two. If you don't use a fightstick but enjoy fighters they all will play better on PS3 as the dualshock controller actually has a nice d-pad. I could keep going but that should get you started. Just pull up my collection and you will see my enormous PS3 collection. I enjoy almost any type of game but I still only keep what I think is good.

I have an 80GB ps3 and after 3 or so years of use it is not enough. recommend to get something greater than 80.

No you can't copy any game disk onto the console. Some games have a required installation.

I tend to look for new hardware rather than used. doesn't matter really just my personal preference.

My favorite exclusives would be Uncharted series, God of War series, Demon's Souls, LittleBigPlanet 2. Also I liked 3D Dot Game Heroes because I'm also zelda fan.

I replaced my 80GB HDD about a year and a half ago with a 640 gig drive. I now have about 200 gigs left, so I've used up over 400. I don't do movies/music, but I do have a lot of downloadable games and all of the games I have that use installs are on there. However, if you're only looking for exclusives and don't want to download much from PSN, you'd be fine with a 160GB drive. As mentioned above, you can always upgrade later.

I agree with buying new, just what I've always done.

Uncharted 1-3 are must haves and I also recommend picking up Infamous, Heavenly Sword, Resistance 1-3, Killzone 2-3, Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4 & LBP2.

i'd buy the 160GB slim, really no need to purchase the 250 GB or 320GB since you can upgrade the hard drives rather easily, all you gotta do is own a screwdriver and watch a 2 minute youtube video, but if you can find a good deal one the other two than go for it
buying used or new is pretty much up to you but it ultimately depends on where ur planning on getting it; amazon has been pretty reliable in terms of used quality and price, whereas gamestop u have a higher chance at getting a crappy hardware and ur paying like $20 less than new.
The exclusives are up to you, fortunately the PS3 has a pretty good exclusive library so find out wat u usually like and see if some PS3 games fit that

You can always delete the game installs on the hard drive, and delete (and later re-download) games you don't play regularly.

thanks for the all the great info and all the game suggestions. I think i rather buy a brand new console and not take the chance with a used one.

Buzz!, SingStar, Resistance, Uncharted, & God of War series, Sly Collection, inFamous games, Dead Space games, Ico/Shadow collection, Jak & Dexter collection, Ratchet & Clank games, Yakuza games, LittleBigPlanet games.

In the PS Store there's an area specifically for PS exclusive digital download games. I recommend fl0wer, the PixelJunk series games, and Fat Princess.

Getting the hard drive factory installed tends to be much pricier than adding your own. And hard drive prices in general are inflated right now due to flood damage. My suggestion is to start off cheap on the hard drive and upgrade later as the need presents itself and the best price also makes itself known.

The one exception to this is if you find any good bundle clearances, which often include the larger drive sizes. So, whatever the best going deal is when you're ready to buy but plan for the future if possible.

If i was buying a ps3 right now new since i dont know of and gift card deals, id buy the uncharted 3 320 gb bundle for 299.99. Reason being , for an extra 50 $ your geting uncharted 3 and double the hard drive

1 - I agree with the other comment's; it's easy to upgrade, you pay more for factory installed drives and at first you won't need a lot. 250gb is sufficient at the beginning although if you find a great deal on a 350gb system you shouldn't pass it up. I've got a 160gb system and am starting to run out of space after 2 1/2 years.

2 - No, but several PS3 games require a hard drive install of large files to speed up loading times.

3 - New, I always recommend new if you can afford it.

4 - This one is a little harder since you didn't mention what type of games you or your brother enjoy playing. One of the above posters gave a link to a PS3 only game list, nice place to start.

Some highlights that I've played are;

  • Uncharted series (you can get 1 & 2 in a dual pack for a good price)
  • Infamous 1 & 2
  • God of War series (1 & 2 have been remade into HD in one collection and 3 is pretty cheap now)
  • Gran Turismo 5 (decent price now and the XL version is out soon if not already)
  • Little Big Planet 1 & 2
I'd also like to mention that if you like MMO's, DC Universe is free-to-play and an 18gb download.

Another point is this week Sony is trying a new experiment which I think is a great idea. Killzone 3's multiplayer option is coming out as a free download but with a level cap. This allows people to try out the multiplayer and if they like it and want to go past the cap they can buy it for $15.

I would also mention you might want to look into Playstation Plus. For $5/month you get a crap load of free games every couple of weeks, I've gotten more out of it than I've put in.

The only drawback to PS+ though is that the "free" games you download aren't yours to keep after you subscription lapses. That HAS to be mentioned, so the OP and anyone else reading this thread who may not know how PS+ works don't get the wrong idea about the "free" games.

As for the hard drive thing, how on Earth are so many people running out of space on theirs? Unless you keep the install files for EVERY game you own on it or load a ton of movies/music onto it, you shouldn't even be using half of what you have. I know that if I'm not going to play a game for a while I'll delete the game install files so I free up that space for other things.

I just leave all the files on there just in case. I don't get rid of any of my games unless I really hate them. Also, there's nothing worse than deciding you want to go through an old favorite again, only to wait 5-10 minutes for an install and upwards of 30 minutes for 5-6 patches. After that, you're just done with even wanting to play and walk away.

If I wanna play a game bad enough again, then I'll go through all of that. But there have been very few games this gen that I've wanted to replay, not to mention very few games I've actually kept once I finished them.

I hope this helps you out somewhat. I do NOT own a PS3 yet and am in a similar situation as you (own a 360, looking for a PS3).

1. The other users have said it best - I would start with 160GB and if you need more it is very easy and much cheaper to upgrade. I would say unless you are getting a good price for a 250GB or higher then I would skip those models.

2. You are forced to install some games. I have a 20GB hard drive for my 360 because I didn't want to pay $50-$60 more for a 120GB one and while for some games the loading does stink, it was $50-$60 better spent on something else.

3. New, please buy new. The only exception would be if you REALLY want to play a PS2 game like Odin Sphere which has terrible loading and slowdown times but runs like a champion in an older and backwards compatible PS3.

4. Something else to consider is that some multiplatform games, such as Eternal Sonata (JRPG) and Metal Gear Solid Collection, are usually better for the PS3 because they are superior versions or the controls are more similar to the way the older games play. Some games, however, are NOT better on the PS3 compared to the 360 like Oblivion GOTY.

Also be on the lookout for upcoming games like Tales of Graces F and DLC games that are console exclusive.

My final thoughts and suggestions are this:

  • You probably won't need to worry about running out of hard drive space. I'm not trying to be rude or anything; I'm only trying to save you some money that I truly feel you may not need to spend.
  • Used 360 games are a little bit cheaper on average than their PS3 counterparts.
  • I would make sure that you have at least a good number of games on your "PS3 list" before even considering buying this console UNLESS you need a Blu-Ray player. I did not find a good enough number to buy one when the Black Friday deals were easy to find but I wasn't looking hard enough at action-based games.

I'll admit, I've been pretty much the same way... It's not been too often that I've actually HAD to do that, but it's more of just a matter of convenience to me - again - just in case.
