Thinking about getting a PSP

I have a little extra money, and the PSP looks very appealing now (especially with the Disgaea remake). However, there are many things I want to consider:

Price. Should I buy a used one for $130 (or less) and save money, or get a slim bundle for $200? Is the bundle a good deal? Does the old PSP pale in comparison to the slim?

Is the slim PSP as good as the original as far as ROMS and homebrew goes?

I just modded my PSP Slim last night to run SNES and other emulators. Easy. And it's noticably lighter than the original.

I'd say the Daxter bundle is a pretty good deal assuming you like Family Guy and platforming games. It also has a memory stick.

The Star Wars bundle... meh... the game isn't very good. I suppose it's impressive considering the hardware it's running on but it's a far, far cry from the first 2 Battlefront games on PS2/Xbox.

The slim is a pretty noticable improvment over the original PSP. You also have to take into consideration the ability to play the slim on a TV (it requires a separate cable and ideally, a TV that supports progressive scan).

As far as homebrew stuff, the slim has the potential to run them better than the originals due to the increased RAM.

I have no experience with the PSP slim...got my fatty at launch and don't feel terribly compelled to upgrade, so I can't offer pros/cons in that respect.

I will say that Daxter is an amazing game...if you have any inclination to play it, I would suggest considering the bundle.

The Daxter bundle is good value for the money. I'd say that if you wanted Daxter anyway, to go for that.

The Star Wars bundle is cool, but it's not the best value.

If you find a good deal on an older PSP, though -- be sure and check the screen both on the surface and once turned on for dead pixels -- that would still be a good way to go. Going into the holiday season, you should be able to find bargains on memory sticks, and (my opinion) an older PSP with a bigger memory stick would win out against a newer, slimmer model that's less well endowed.

I should probably reword that.
Disgaea is more like a port w/ some new stuff than a remake
But a damn good port. And the Etna mod sounds like reason enough to play through the game again. Also, there's ad hoc multiplayer ;)

I had a regular psp a long time ago and sold it to help pay for my 360. And while I love my 360, I'm thinking about getting a psp slim now as well.

As someone who was in your same situation about two months ago, I would say get the Daxter bundle. It's the best value, IMO, and the silver is very slick. Except for the screen it shows virtually no fingerprints, and it looks great.

I don't have one yet, but I plan on getting a slim soon. Check it out, get some hands on time with the thing and you'll see if you want one. For me, the slim's higher refresh rate and brighter screen are enough to make me want to upgrade.

The d-pad has also been raised, making diagonals alot easier. This is great especially for fighting games. This and the new white color made the upgrade to Slim worth it for me. The TV out feature seems pretty neat and I'll be trying that out as soon as I pick up some cables.

Well, just traded in some stuff and got about $110 in credit, which brings me up to $370, including cash. I'll probably buy the Daxter PSP dundle and Disgaea+guide. However, I'll probably wait and see if there will be any black friday deals.

My desire for the white color dictated my choice of which slim to buy, I would probably recommend the same for you (not to get the white one persay but to get whichever pack that has the color of PSP you want)

i just caved and bought one when i found a $40 off $200 coupon at circuit city and got the daxter pack. i'm waiting on decalgirl skin (to change the silver into something different and more interesting) and some random dealextreme accessories.

i went with the silver because i didn't think the star wars game warranted a bundle - the free memory stick, awesome daxter game, and free family guy episodes on the go sold it to me. also, i wasn't a fan of my cousin's black one (that seemed to get prints just by me looking at it).

i gotta say, final fantasy tactics and disgaea on the go - those were my big sellers. now i'm looking for mega man powered up and maverick hunter to make use of the buy 3 gamestop coupon that's been floating around...

Jeanna D' Arc, Disgaea and Final fantasy Tactics, and Soul Normad. I'll pickup FFT & Disgaea whenever drop down $30 or less. I hated $40 Price tag. Still busy with Jeanna D' Arc and Dracula X Chronicles :)

After having to return 5 of them to CC due to screen issues, I finally got a good one. Let me say that the Star Wars Slim PSP is the cat's meow. The screen is brighter and has a faster refresh rate than its predecessor. The speaker placement and the improved buttons round out this little beauty, making it a worth the cash.

Soul Normand is only on PS2

DAMN! I didn't even think about that.. I think I might get a slim and maybe give my phat PSP to my brother.. who knows.. but I'm think if I can get on with that 40 off 200 deal when it comes back around, and perhaps use the 15 dollars off psp I got w/ the God of War demo.. then I could be in business.
$40 off $200 coupon states not valid on consoles.. so you're lucky it worked
yeah, i guess i got lucky that maybe it's listed as a bundle or something... the csr didn't say anything, so my wallet breathed a heavy sigh of relief. the coupon most def is YMMV (it was risky enough that i printed it out when it does say "no copies").

Definately is nice than the original, everybody raves about the Ipod Touch's Screen but I encode movies with Xvid2PSP at 480x272 and I placed the Slim next to my Buddies Itouch and the PSP blows away the screen on the Ipod, and the PSP is half the price.

Not to mention the PSP plays [good] games as well as music and video :)
