CAGiversary!
Okay all of you Cheap Ass Gamers should get a kick out of this.

Everyone knows gamefly is to videogames as neftlix is to movies.

So in one of those entertainment books full of coupons, I found a free 14 day trial to Gamefly. But after reading the terms and conditions of the trial, I found out that it is a FREE 7 WEEK TRIAL!!!

So guess what I did. I just got Bioshock and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for free. Here is how it worked.

On Sunday the 9th of Sept I signed up for the trial. I went to www.gamefly.com/promo and entered the code and it started. I filled my game Q up with Metroid and Bioshock.

The free trial ends September 23rd. But I dont have to send the games back then. So long as GF receives them 7 days after i cancel there is no charge. So this makes it basically a 3 week trial. GF must receive em by the 29th.

Here is the kicker. Even if they dont have em by 7 days after I cancel. All they do is charge my credit card (required for the free trial) for their purchase price, but if they recieve them within 30 days of the day they charge me, I get a full refund!!!

To SUM up: For no charges they must recieve by end of 3 weeks, for refunded credit they must recieve by the end of 7 weeks.

Thoughts, comments, questions, insults?

how's their customer service? If it's bad, you'll probably spend lots of time on the phone explaining what happened, etc.

Seems like a lot of hassle (and risk of more hassle) just to be able to play two games you can't even keep.

teh worst, they dont even answer email questions till 2-3 days later!

Not a bad idea, but GF's customer service is notoroius for being shitty (main reason why I cancelled years ago.) You might have problems getting through to talk to someone if any problems arise, like they didn't issue your refund. Quick question: do you have the games yet? Shipping's also a problem, since Metroid P3 & Bioshock are new/ popular games. You may have to wait. Plus GF also has problems reciveing games. Keep this in mind while you do your this little project.

But if it works then good for you.

Actually its been no hassle at all. Cancelling and (possibly) getting the credit card charge and refund is easy and only requires a little time spent on the internet, which I obviously have plenty of.

These games have very little replay value for me personally because (1) They have no multiplayer and (2) I rarely replay video games. Metroid is the only one I may want to replay, although, now that I think of it I also may want to replay Bioshock. Either way, 7 weeks should be plenty to play through each once at the very least and probably twice each since the second playthrough is much quicker.

My boy said that he only likes to own videogames and these are two great ones, but they are both fairly new and how much does it cost to own them? $100 bucks at the least. I'll play through em now for free and possibly buy em a good bit later when they're cheap. Either way I will try to play through each at least once and get them back to Netflix so I never get charged for anything.

EDIT: I got the games on Tuesday (I ordered Sunday night). One of their shipping centers
is in my city, Pittsburgh. I have no intention of signing up for good and hope to be able to avoid the charge/refund.

UPDATE!!!

It does not appear that I will be able to finish both Bioshock and Metroid Corruption in order to make sure GF receives them by the 29th. I've played Metroid 10 hours and am only 50% done according to the load screen (although 70% of the rooms have been visited) and I have NO idea how far i have left to go in BIOSHOCK.

Retrospectively, it would have been better and quicker for me to just play through one game at a time instead of playing both at once. I could probably remember where to go better and just have spent my gaming time more efficiently.

So it looks like I will go ahead and continue to take my time and just cancel on the 23rd, take the charge when they dont get the game on the 29th, and get a refund when they recieve it within a month. Either way if they give me shit about the refund, i can challenge it w/ my cred card company. The best thing is that ALL of this can be done online.
Why not sign up to the trial with a one time use credit card number? When they try to charge for the game they shouldn't be able to.
Because I have never heard of these credit cards and I doubt Gamefly would allow them to be used for the free trial.

On a seperate note, i had to pick free gift for the trial and picked sports illustrated and started receiving that even though I never will end up paying anything at all.

I just beat MP3: Corruption last night with 73% scans in 15:37 and will ship that back to GF tomorrow so as to avoid the charge on that game. I cancelled Sunday the 23rd so they have to receive it by the 29th for me to avoid the charge/refund. I will ship corruption back but probably get the charge/refund for Bioshock because I am still very early into that game.

ANOTHER UPDATE!!

Got an e-mail from Gamefly saying that they charged me on Oct 5th for bioshock. So now I have another 30 days to ship it back to them for a full refund.

In retrospect I LOVED both Metroid and Bioshock, but Bioshock is the one that I kept around and I am going to start my 2nd playthrough on difficulty to try to get EVERY achievment because that is how much I loved that game. THANK YOU GAMEFLY for saving me 120 bucks and allowing me to play both of the games to my hearts content. I have unitl Nov. 2nd before I have to ship back bioshock.

120 bucks? that's full retail-talk. i thought this was Cheap Ass Gamer. and really, a long-term loan isn't much to brag about. you only saved money if you get to keep the two games. i mean heck, you wouldn't really consider borrowing games from friends as beating the system, would you? that's the logic you're using here.

120 bucks is about what those games would cost USED right now, and its been quite a while since the OP. So no, its not really full retail talk, and even if it is that is as cheap as anybody can get them anywhere.

As to me only saving money if I get to keep the games, you're wrong about that too becasue it costs money just to rent games. Getting to play and beat both of these games within weeks of when they came out FOR FREE is worth bragging about.

Regarding borrowing games from a friend: If you play and beat games and get as much use out of them as you would ever want (like I did with bioshock and metroid) FOR FREE, then yeah, it is beating "the system." "The system" tries to make money through videogames (it is, after all, an industry), and if you get to play and beat them without giving "the system" a dime, then yes you're beating it IMO.

Maybe characterizing my savings as $120 is misleading because I do not get to keep them, but as I've said before, getting to play and beat both of these games within weeks of when they came out FOR FREE is worth bragging about. I've never replayed through a game more than twice so the only difference here is that I dont get to have cases sitting on my shelf and i dont get to resell them, which i dont care about because I never paid a cent for them.

gay reasoning... could also be used with blockbuster keeping anyhting a week after due date. I dont see anyone "bragging" about that deal.

Ignoring the fact that you think reasoning can have a sexual orientation (or be happy if thats the term you meant) you're wrong because blcokbuster costs money to use. If someone used a free trial to blockbuster to play and beat (twice) new games like bio and metroid then I would give em props for getting such a great value for free.

yeah, but by that token, if we all bragged every time we each "scored a deal" such as yours, we'd crash the site. you're not going to post a thread every time you watch a movie on TV (or borrowed) that might've otherwise cost you $14.99 at the store, right? and if not, why not? after all, it might be a movie you've really been wanting to see, and you totally "saved" that $14.99...

i say i got a better deal than you ...
15 days to play bioshock and stranglehold.... AND 10$ for a pizza, a pizza that i got to keep not borrow.
well i kept it for a day or two until i shitted it out, but thats beside the point.

so yea ... don't see whats so much to brag about.
7 weeks is a pretty long time even for a casual gamer that wants to take his time on 2 games, a very lonnnng time.
but give most other people 15 days and they can beat or at least get all the satisfaction they can get out of it with no problems.
you see it as a deal to brag about, but i disagree.
and that pizza was f-ing good.

Hey, I've bragged numerous times when I got a supposedly hard to find game for cheap, like my uhhh Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance II for Xbox for less than $20, my complete copy of Rez for $10(used though), my copy of Ico for $10, etc, etc, etc.

If someone feels they got a deal, what is the real harm in bragging about it?

Thanks cheapest gamer, I agree.

If any of you who say I have nothing to brag about actually played and beat metroid and Bioshock (beat bioshock twice actually) for free then you would agree that its worth a mention. These games are two of the greatest I have ever played. Plus, having them for such a long time is actually better than owning them because Im getting all that I would ever want out of them and they aren't taking up space on my shelves. (Just kidding about the saving space stuff.)

The comparison to bragging about watching a borrowed movie or one on TV is idiotic. Of course nobody would brag about that because they're free. YOu know anybody who played/beat bioshock and metroid for free (and not borrowed from a friend)?

So yeah, they're sick games. They're long games. They're new games (very new at the beggining of this post). I played both til my hearts content and never spent a cent.

As to the post about the 15 days of video games and pizza, mine is better because I got my fill of pizza (maybe you can tell by my name but I used to be a delivery guy for 4 years). I ate more free pizza than you can shake a stick at and never bragged about it...wait...actually I did brag about it alot and am bragging about it now. Free pizza rules. I would not have been able to beat both of these games in 15 days.

the comparison was completely apt. you're just lashing out because it hit home and you're annoyed.

get over yourself.

No, the comparison is not "apt" as you so eloquently put it. I am not going to lower myself to your level and respond to your ad hominem insults that have nothing to do with this thread.

Here is why your comparison is idiotic: All of the things you mentioned were free; Metroid and Bioshock are not free.

pwned.

I'll take your silence as acknowledgement of ownage.

Anyway, I am still playing bioshock and close to having every ahcievment. i cant overstate how good this game is. The best thing about this deal is that I could easily have held on to Metroid for another playthrough if I felt like it as I dont have to have either one back to gamefly until Nov. 5th.
