those of u with gaming computers

See sig... set me back $1800 for everything but only $1050 for the necessities (case, PS, CPU, mobo, GPU, 2GB ram, 320GB HD, DVD+/-R drive, and two case fans).

I kinda wish I hadn't gotten the monitor though which was $500 alone at the time.

There is a high tendency that building a computer will cost less than buying a similar computer from a company, but that is not always true. If you're building a gaming PC, that tendency is much higher. However, for a low end computer, you might see that pre-built computers from a company (eMachine, Dell...etc) will sometime cost less than building your own.

Just making sure people are not misinformed. It tends to be true, but if you get on the right deal, you can save money from going Dell, or Compaq, etc. So don't go out and buy parts to put together your first self-built computer just yet.

My 'gaming' PC is put together from scraps I have lying around, and from taking my sister's X800XL that she doesnt use anymore. So I can only tell on a ballpark that my PC costed around $600 ish, + $500 on LCD.

Shuttle ST20G5
Athlon 64 3500+
1GB DDR PC3200
ATI X800XL PCIE
Emprex 16X DL DVD writer
Seagate 160GB SATA
PCI USB 2.0 card
Samsung 215TW

Not necessarily, if you buy a computer from BB/CC/etc and it has all those mail in rebates, it will probably be cheaper to buy it that way than building a similar one yourself.

As for building a gaming PC, you would probably get away with something for $700ish easily.

I really doubt they use gaming components though, your almost always better off building your own pc. You get to fully control all aspects of it. They don't usually give you a decent video card in those machines.

It really depends on who you're talking to. Most of the people do not know how to build a computer, and many don't even know what to look for in buying a computer. If you're talking to me, sure, I agree with you. But in many cases, people who know little about computers are better off buying a pre-built, pre-installed computer with tech support, as sad as it seems. Because if you're a beginner and build your first computer, and encounters a problem, you have nowhere to turn to but to the internet. AND chances are high that you do not have extra parts lying around to test the problem(s), let alone having the knowledge to do diagnostics. It becomes more of a headache than one would ask for just to 'possibly' save a few bucks.

It's splendid that you know for your own good that building your own computer is better than buying one. I and a few guys here would agree too, but when you look at a consumer level of computer intelligence, building a computer is just not a good idea.
