One of my friends says (way its played in Casinos..or something) that you only go by the highest card (Ace, which both have) and none of the other cards matter, only the high one. Thus they would split the pot both sharing the Ace.

And then there is the way we have always played, is whomever has the 5 highest cards wins the pot. Thus having Player two win because of the Queen.

Things got a little hostile considering there was a hefty amount of chips involved.

Any help on this would be appreciated (links would help too ;))

I agree with the above on casino's it always splits on the highest card if it isn't in either hand, but when I have played "horse-around" games we always went with who had the highest card, high stakes poker means you gotta follow the bottom line rules layed out by casinos though.

Hmmm... Funny. I (or my friends) always played by the highest 5 cards out of a hand. I thought that was the casion way. I probably should look into that...

I've never heard of casino rules that don't consider any other cards since the A's were on the board. Player 2 should have won the hand since the Q beat player 1's J.

Flush: Five cards of the same suit.
In the event of a tie: The player holding the highest ranked card wins. If necessary, the second-highest, third-highest, fourth-highest, and fifth-highest cards can be used to break the tie.

Flush:
Five cards of the same suit. If there is more than one flush, the hand with the highest card(s) wins

I suppose that technically what wins a flush is the highest card in the flush. In this case, the Ace being in the flop is the highest card, creating a draw between the two hands. But most home playes, I would assume, play with highest card in-hand on a flush wins. Both are, technically, valid ways to play, but you should probably agree on a rule set before playing.
It's definitely the next highest card. 100% sure.
yup, it's the best 5 card hand.

come on think about it, you think the casino is gonna give a split pot between KQ suited VS 23 suited. People would go insane!

At home you can play either way its just that everyone needs to agree to one and stick to it. I usually play split it but if everyone wants to include kickers I just go with it. Its all about consistency to make the game fair
