Despite the high prices, it's still sad to see them go.
Tower Records once had three stores in the Portland area (TMK), and now they're down to one - the Gateway location on NE 102nd. I've been there a few times. I've only bought something twice; the first time, I had a coupon and got the first 3 Doors Down CD for around six bucks shortly after it was released. The second time was when they were first clearing out games. I got a non-Player's Choice copy of True Crime: Streets Of LA for the Gamecube for ten bucks. This was shortly after it became a Player's Choice title, so it was a decent deal back then. Oddly enough, it was the last game they had in the store.
The other two were at Eastport Plaza and Beaverton Mall. The Eastport Plaza store closed sometime in the early 90's when Eastport Plaza was still an enclosed mall. The store was right near the main mall entrance. The mall was starting to get pretty dead by then, but that didn't keep Wherehouse from moving into the space. When the mall was finally torn down in the late 90's, Wherehouse moved into a space in the new strip center that took the mall's place.
The Beaverton Mall location closed shortly before Beaverton Mall was fixed up and had its name changed to Cedar Hills Crossing. I was in the area one day right after their going out of business sale started and decided to look around. I didn't get anything. It wasn't a huge loss for the area, as there was an Everyday Music across the street that has a great selection, and a Borders up the street, both of which are still open to this day. Along with that, Best Buy later opened a store in Cedar Hills Crossing.
I'll probably stop by the Gateway store at least one more time, to see if there's any hard to find CD's I'm looking for there and/or anything else worth buying.
So long, Tower Records. You'll live on in our memories - especially when one of us plays a round of Crazy Taxi.
