Toys-R-Us might get out of the Toy Business

wow that would suck for kids, i used to love going to toys r us when i was younger, even if i wasnt getting anything.
 
At the risk of sounding obvious, no more TRU deals.

Or no more jobs for those CAGs who work at TRU.


/sighs at the continuing consolidation of the retail world. How long before everything is a Wal-Mart?
 
Use pyschological marketing. Wal-Mart toys are not much cheaper, and they have a poorer selection. Just change it from "Toys R Us" to "Toy Discount Orgas-mirama" or something of the sort. When most people see the word "Discount", they believe it.

I can't say I care, the only Toys R Us that I could easily get to had a roof cave in during the winter when too much snow and rain stayed on the roof. They cleared it out and now it is just a parking lot, as such if they went the only thing I could say about it would be oh well.

I guess none of you have gone to a Toy's R Us lately? It's been baby shit for years now and they have been adding more and more as the days pass.

They want to seperate the stores than why the fuck did they make Toy's R Us take on the Kids R Us / Babies R Us in the first place? About 3 years Toy's R Us went to the shiter and Kids, Babies, and Bikes took over.
 
My only concern is whether the new owners of the toy retailing operation would continue to give me store credit for using my beloved TRU Visa. If not it would be time to find a new kickback deal.

This sounds like there may be some good sales coming up. Shame they're going out of business. They would often have good deals and, for a while, were the only place you could pick up things for older systems. Will definitely miss those buy 2 get 1 free deals, even if they only happened once or twice a year.
 
Toys R Us's main problem is that it suffers from idiotic management. My local Toys R Us used to be a very popular and busy place. It was attached to the mall (no inside entrance, though) and made tons of business all year round. Then, all of a sudden, for no particular reason that I could see, they moved to a small, shitty, run-down plaza in the middle of god-forsaken nowhere. The only reason that I can think of was lower rent...

Anyway, the new building was probably half the size of the old, PLUS they incoporated Kids R Us into it, so their toy selection is probably about 25% of what it was. The store looks like a flea-market, with crap stacked every which way, and dust bunnies floating around because they can't clean behind all the stuff piled in the isles. Because its in the middle of god-forsaken nowhere, they've lost all drop-in traffic.

Not surprisingly, sales aren't quite as good as they used to be... They made money hand-over-fist in the old location. I don't even know how they stay in business in the new one.
 
Was anyone really all that surprised to hear this? I mean, let's face it... I can't really recall the last time I've said 'hey, let's all go down to Toys R Us and buy us some games...' With specialty stores like Best Buy, CC, EB, and Gamestop literally handing TRU their own ass in terms of prices, you've got to see the writing on the wall... '$50 for Sphinx at TRU when BB has it for $10? Hells yeah, I'm so there...'

This harkens back to my childhood when they had a Lionel Playworld (how's THAT for old school...) in this virtually dead zone of a plaza... but they would always have the best freaking deals... then they finally shut down and I shed a tear... I salute you, fair Lionel...
 
That would be crazy, they do have a lot better selection than Walmart for better prices, but as you always have to remember the reason Walmart is king is convenience and one stop shopping.

I may not go to TRU for games, I will occasionally pick up a decent deal on some of their old stock(N64 games) and just this week I picked up a penny strategy guide(unlike EB who would throw out a guide instead of selling it to me). The main reason I went was to check out the toys and see what they had in the way of action figures, as they're cheaper than Media Play but don't have the anime/game titles as far as selection.
 
My TRU has jacked up their prices on stuff, or at least on action figures so they now rival Kaybee for the most expensive store in town. Add to that the fact that they get new figure lines a solid 4 to 6 weeks after walmart, Target, and even other TRUs in nearby cities, so they don't get much of my business.

Agreed. Years ago my husband had a part time job at Toysrus. He didn't work there because the pay was high, no he worked there because he was a toy collector and got employee discounts, double on Xmas. Using his employee discount, we got cheap video games, action figures, collectables, whatever we wanted. Then a couple years ago TRU decided to "restructure" their stores and alter their merchandise selection and started carrying overpriced baby items instead of actual toys, and eliminated half the toyshelves in their store. Overpriced baby toys and furniture and clothing that can be bought elsewhere for much cheaper. My husband quit after that, because there was no new stock coming in that he actually wanted to buy. Plus the newer items they did carry at TRU were identical to the ones being sold at Target and Walmart, only at a higher price.

Anyone who shopped at TRU ten years ago can tell you now that there is a big difference in the stores. Before TRU used to basically be a toy warehouse, and there are now half as many shelves as their used to be.
When TRU stopped being all about the toys, and decided to started carrying baby merchandise, they shot themselves in the foot and ruined thier own business. Good riddance, I say.
 
Sad and all, but just think of the clearance prices on games they'll have if they do go under. I'm imagining a nice 50% off all games, then 75%, then at the very end 90%.

Toys R Us has kinda sucked ever since they changed the floorplan to those goofy "zones" instead of row after row of pegboards and shelving.
It seems like store carry a TON less stock than they used to, and the variety just isn't the same.
 
Honestly, I buy mostly toys from TRU and it's no surprise they're losing money. There prices are unbelievably high, even on older product. For instance, the other day I tried to ring up a 3 year old Chun-Li toy and it rang up at $2.99 and the thing only costed a couple bucks more at release.

Yeah, I think the plan to make it more "friendly" has completely backfired. Anyone could have told them that if they had simply testmarketed it in a few stores instead of the whole company.
 
They talk about Toys R Us and Babies R Us, but what the hell is the Geoffrey store? They just starting building one here and it was originally going to be a TRU. Now it says "Coming Soon: Geoffrey" or something similar.
Does anyone know what is inside a Geoffrey store?
 
I remember getting lost in Toys-R-Us all the time as a kid. I was at one a few weeks ago and I still manged to get seperated from the group and spend 15 minutes trying to find everybody.
 
I went to TRU today on the way home and let me tell you, I am a bit sad that they are going away if they do... after all, I got my very first PS1 from them... no deals though...

Lionel is where i got my NES. and Mega Man 3 issue of Nintendo power. And a basketball net for a dollar.

I remeber when I was little we were going to get me a bike and I was so excited I threw up inside TRU.
 
TRU was awesome as a little kid, I always loved going to TRU with my younger brother. We always bought legos and loved it.

Man you were a quick child. It took me a half hour sometimes to find my mommie. But over the years the Jacksonville Toys R US have become Ghetto R Us.

I purchased Archon for my Commodore 64 at TRU... during simpler, happier times. It would be sad if it went under.
 
yeah there is only one TRU that I've been to that still has the old school lay out. With the good toys at C4. There are so damn few toys at TRU now. I take one spin and boom, I know what they have in stock. There is like over 3/4 of the store I never have to visit.
 
:( I work at toys r us and only planed on staying till the end of the 2004 holiday season, but still sucks since one guy been working their since they opened the building, for 22 years. sure he makes 10.50 a hour but damn its gotta suck basically dedicated his life to it and now it will be non existant on the ride by.
 
that sucks,i was hoping to take my future kids (once i get married and all) to TRU, cause i used to love going there as a kid. oh well,looks like i am going to have to find somewhere else now.
 
The guy has been there 22 years and hasn't moved up to management? Is he visibly impaired or do you have to talk to him before it becomes apparent?

Talk about a corporation taking advantage of an employee. My husband only worked at TRU for a few years part-time and made $9 an hour, and he had nothing to do with management. Sounds like that guy wasted 20 years of his working life for what...AN EXTRA DOLLAR AN HOUR??? What a waste....
 
well since my town has never had a Toys R Us, and i've only been to one maybe twice, it doesnt bother me..

it just brings everyone else one step closer to my Toys R Us'less world.
