Trade advice?

Ichabod

CAGiversary!
Hello all. I figured with the recent events in trading here there might be more than a few people who would be happy to offer up some advice about a scenario I'm currently encountering.

I set up a trade on a game trading website recently where I would trade out my FFXI for the other person's game. The trade was accepted and pended. I wrote out a summary of how to set up the game and sent it and the game out priority. Upon receiving the game the other person asks if the game includes the free trial as indicated on the front of the box. Keep in mind here that this is a trade for a USED copy of the game and was labeled as such in my original offer. He then says that he'll keep it if I'm willing to pay for his first month, thus essentially giving him his "trial month."

So my question here is, should I send him the extra money or is it wrong of him to ask for something extra once the trade has already been accepted and pended? Feel free to leave feedback in addition to answering the poll. Also, if you have any questions or need any clarifications feel free to ask. I'd just like to get a general feeling about this from people outisde the trade (and trading site) itself. Thanks for your help.

No.
It looks like he's trying to take advantage of you. As long as you didn't state anywhere in the agreement that there was a free trial, I don't see an obligation to provide him with said service. If he didn't understand that it was a used copy and that the trial period has ended then he was making an uninformed decision.

No. When something is "used", you shouldnt expect to get any of the extras that come with it unless stated otherwise.

no. all questions should have been asked and answered before the trade. all the terms were put before him and he (or she) agreed to them. therefore, you shouldn't have to pay for their "added" stipulations.

Siamese, one month is $13.

As for the original deal it was my used game for his used game straight up. There were no free trials expressed or implied in my end of the bargain.

I did eventually offer to split the cost of one month (when it seemed like I wasn't going to get my end of the deal), but he made no response to that offer. It's actually kind-of funny because I don't think he knew it even originally came with a free month because he didn't ask me about it until he received the game from me and his question at that time was, "So do I get the free month like it says on the box?" Go figure.

Thanks for the input. Keep it coming.

Then it sounds to me that he's "testing out the water" to see how much he can get out of you. Since he wasn't aware or expressed no concerns about the free trial during the negotiations shows that he is trying his luck to get something for nothing.

Again - no sale, if the free trial is not brought up at all in the negotiations, he has no right to expect it.

agreed. HE knew the game was used when it was bought and it is an MMO with a monthly fee and if you stated used, then he should have implied the free trial was used up

He obviously would not have received a free month's subscription had he purchased a used copy from EBgames, Gamestop, etc. So, why would he expect it from you? Makes no sense at all, really.

Okay, here's some more fodder for the discussion. I found these posts by him on another board. Keep in mind there are other posts in the thread, but I've left in everything relevant.

Post 1:
I got a used one in a trade here, but I have a few questions:
1.) Can I create my own account, or do I have to use his?
2.) Will I still get the first 30 days free?

Any help would be appreciated

Another poster's answer to his questions:
1. Use his.
2. No, you have to pay.

Post 2:
I think I may just send it back, I wasn't aware of this

Another poster's response to his second post:
That's a bit of BS, there. I mean, it's not the other trader's fault you didnt do your research or ask enough questions.

Post 3:
I know it's not his fault, but it says on the bottom "Not for Resale by a Prior Owner". I think I should've been atleast notified that I would have to use his name, and that I wouldn't get the free trial...
(I guess I should've checked the legality of trading the game. However, the "having to use his name" thing is not true. You can change account names, as he learned later.)

...several other posts talking about whether or not the game will be allowed to be listed on the site...

Post 4:
Yeah, I may just keep it after all, we'll see. I was really hoping for that free month, because I don't want to end up paying for something I might not like...

Post 5:
Sure. I decided to have him pay for the first trial month since he used it, and i'm gonna just keep it.

You've made the offer of splitting the cost, which is generous, and at this point, you should stick to that. Clearly this is a child with whom you are dealing -- someone who does not concern himself with how his actions affect other people.

I second that. Since you have made the offer to split the cost, stick to that. If he refuses, have him send the game back.

That's the thing, while you are changing names you're not changing cd-keys which are linked to the game and the free trial. Thus it's one trial per box/copy of the game.

Edit: Since he has indeed already signed up for an account at this point (I guess assuming that I would pay), I doubt that he'd be too willing to send back the game. Feeling more and more screwed as the time goes by.

If you did decide to pay for part of it, did you wait until you got your side of the trade? This guy sounds like a jerk, but I guess you can't blame him for trying (as it worked, lol).

I wouldn't have paid unless you hinted at it beforehand.

Okay, here's my response to his request for money. I sent this out on Saturday after he got the game and emailed me.

I'm having a little trouble with paying for your first month since that
wasn't a part of the original deal. However, if I did send you the money I
would want you to send out your game first. I trust you but I'm a little
apprehesive about you having both the game and some money and me still having nothing. Would you be willing to split the cost of the first month?

This is all I said about it though. I did not say that I would definitely do it. But this was all that was said about the matter.

As for getting my part of the deal before sending the money, that would still be the plan if money does in fact need to be sent. However, he still hasn't marked the game I sent him as received yet, much less sent me my part of the deal.

I say he made a mistake buying it if he wanted a free month. You should just let him pay for the month himself, I mean why not, do any other used things come with free things too?
