Trade-in folly at EB - Double-check that receipt!

This is a longish post, but here we go...

I go in yesterday to trade a couple of Wii games on the 2-for-new and get rid of some 360 titles since the bonus $20 for 3 games is in effect.

There are two employees working the registers, and the guy tells me I ought to be looking at around $70 credit for the 360 stuff. I traded in the 2 Wii games to get Pokemon Battle Revolution for my boy. $70 is cool, so he helps the girl running the other register get it started.

She rings me out and gives me a receipt with $46 in credit. I aske her what happened that I'm getting $24 less. She says that it's correct.

Me and the boy are getting hungry, so we head down to the food court for some Sbarro's. We get done and head back to EB. I show the receipt to register guy, and he agrees there is a problem.

He has to re-run the transaction, but I end up with $66. That's cool, so I'm out the door.

I wasn't really mad at the girl. I know that the register system at EB/GS isn't the most intuitive thing, and that the associates have to hand-correct things, but just a caveat to all of ya - pay attention during the transaction, and double-check your receipt! I've had this stuff happen there before, and I've been double-rung for items a time or two.

Finally, they pushed me damn hard for preorders - I had to say "No" four times. I know that corporate is probably breathing down their necks for stuff like this, but corporate ought to visit a store sometime to see how stuff like this pisses customers off. There was another guy in there that was close to walking out, he was getting so pissed at having to say "No".

They don't care if it pisses customers off, and if one employee won't push it, there's millions of nerds that would love to work at EB and they know they're easily replacable. I'm glad GC doesn't do this. A simple "Anything you want to preorder today?" and them saying 'nah, that's alright' once is enough for me.

Yeah. GS is REALLY pushing people to reserve / order Madden '08. I had to tell the girl at the counter like 4 times that I'm not gonna do it. She was nice though, but GS / EB is really expecting people to push for preorders.

I always tell them I have modded systems so I would never buy any games. It usually shuts them up pretty fast

About as bad as the one I went to a few days ago. Bought a couple of used games which was a Xbox game, a Gamecube game & 2 PS2 games. Got to the counter got the lecture about Madden 08 coming to Ps2, said no thanks, then he mentioned it's also coming for Xbox & Gamecube(BTW, it's $10 less for the Xbox version compared to the PS2 version) and turned it down. Then before going back to the games, shoved a binder with a list of games to preorder for PS2. From what I saw, there was nothing worth pre-order. I then used the line I've used for awhile that usually shuts them up, that I'm waiting to get a next gen system before buying new games.

I my self also HATE GS employees shoving pre-orders down my throat. but surprisingly today, when I bought games from a GS the guy behind the counter never asked if I wanted to pre-order anything or even apply to get a discount card. At the store I work at (it's an independent video game store called FX) we don't have discount cards and we hardly ever ask if you want to reserve anything, if you want it, ask and we'll hold one for you, no down payment necessary :)

My daughter offered to make me a t-shirt that says "NO I DO NOT WANT TO PREORDER ANY GAMES TODAY" for my next trip to EB. I may take her up on it.

when they ask you to preorder something say, 'no but i would like to cancel some preorders today'

can you do that? I always thought once you pre-ordered something you couldn't take it back....

lol ive been told
*i can only change it to another preorder
*a preorder is a binding contract that you cant break
*if you cancel you lose your deposit
*you need your reciept to cancel
*only the dm, who is never here, can authorize a preorder cancel

of course you can cancel it but it screws the monkey who punches it into the computer. i wouldnt reccomend it though, since the last time i cancelled a preorder (i was told the halo 3 figure w/ controllers would be a gamestop exclusive) the guy has an attitude problem with me and tries to guilt trip me into making more.

You mean like I did last weekend with my Transformers PS2 pre order. I know, I know, the game already came out, but aside from a movie poster, they had crap for pre order bonuses for it. I got the poster when I plunked my $5 down, but I don't really like the design, so it's sitting in my room in the corner all rolled up still.

That reminds me, I still have a God Of War II pre order at another GS brand store, but it's much further away than the TF one and I get to that area maybe 2-3 times a year IF that.

Ahhhhh well, I got some good guides outta that store anyway for my preorder, so I'm happy.

Oh and definitely, you CAN ask for your $$$ back, which they absolutely hate you doing, but if there's nothing on the horizon that has a good pre-order bonus I don't wanna waste even $5 on it, specially if I can't get that bonus NOW and just cancel before the game comes out. LOL
My daughter offered to make me a t-shirt that says "NO I DO NOT WANT TO PREORDER ANY GAMES TODAY" for my next trip to EB. I may take her up on it.
There used to be an awesome shirt for sale online that said, "No, I do not want a strategy guide with that," although I guess GS doesn't push gudies like they used to. Reserves are the new guides.

And no I am not interested in giving the Gamestop Corp a $5 interest-free loan out of my wallet, thankyouverymuch.

And yes, the OP is right, ALWAYS check your receipt before you leave the store. Since I buy a lot of scarce/rare titles, what tends to happen is that the price has gone UP since they stickered the game. Legally they have to sell it for the stickered price, and so I've had to do more "return/rebuys" for the adjusted price in recent months than I would like. It annoys both me and the employee.

So what have we learned?

- ALWAYS check your reciept, and condition of used games BEFORE you go home.

- Gamestop Clerks are poorly paid to harass customers with preorder requests.

I would be like, "Why? They're just going to release another edition next year."

The ones I go to had a hard time reading my credit card....I had to get a newer one and it still didn't work quite right.

Not only that, but one employee told me their processing system is still on dial-up.

It's really hit-or-miss w/ GS, and depends on the employees. Some of my local stores are better than others. I went to one yesterday to pickup a used Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth & use the $5 off coupon. Guy took the coupon & edge card, didn't give me any hassle, and rang everything up correctly. Asked me once about pre-orders, I told him no thanks, and that was that.

This was definitely the exception for GS - but it's the way things should work. ;)

I still haven't had a problem with being pushed preorders yet, maybe I would go with the modded systems line or tell them that I have an R4 for the DS (I really don't have one though).
