Trade your defective/dead PS3 to Sony get a (refurb) 120 GB for $100

Sony has had this deal for at least 6 months if the PS3 was dead, but now you can just trade it in for a refurbed slim with a working fatty.

The article is also wrong about the price for an out of warranty fatty repair. Its currently $130, not $150 for it.

SD had a thread full of misinformation on this.

I have to wonder though. Why wouldn't somebody who has a working fully BC system just resell that for $200-ish on their own and then just buy a slim brand new instead of taking a chance on a refurb(even one from Sony)?

I could see if it's completely dead/fried, since then it's more or less just a brick, but trading a fully working system AND paying $100 to Sony makes no sense to me.
I'm pretty sure they've been doing this for a while now. I'm shocked it took people this long to post online about it.
It was posted online back when the slim version hit retailers. I know someone who had 60GB model die and when he contacted support, they told him he could trade his PS3 in for a "new" (recertified) 120GB model for $99. When he asked what was wrong with the slim, he was told that they have to classify them as recertified because they open the box and ensure that the units are in working order before shipping them out.

A lot of people might not know and just do it to save themselves the effort, no matter how minimal.

Since I did try to get a bite here on the trade/sell forum (I even asked $180 with no takers) I was going to do just that, right now just thinking I'll keep the refurb, buy a slim and use it, getting tired of sending that darn thing back and re-downloading all of my stuff over and over, plus deactivating my accounts too...

I've been asking $125 for a 60gb I picked up last year sometime from someone trading it into the one local shop. Only problem is the outer shell is beat to fuck(scratches galore) and whoever had it originally took out the screw to open up the top of it and never put it back. So most likely they had cleaned the laser on it and just said fuck it about putting the screw back in.

So unfortunately it's definitely not in 'like new' condition. But when I tested it after buying it, it played everything great and was actually quieter than I had thought it would be.

But I'm fairly certain the scratches and sliding 'lid' on the top of the console would be deal breakers for many people.

I even tried offering to buy an old outer casing from another 60gb that the one Gamestop store was using as a display for their refurb PS3's. Unlike the one time I tried that prior there were no internal components even left in it, so I figured I could offer them $20 for it and swap out the cases to get a nice looking 60gb for around $80 total. No dice though.

traded in my 60 g model for a 120g. Sony actually sent me a 160g model instead with newest revised chip set. $100 is pretty reasonable for a trade in.

Can anyone answer if they will take a ps3 that has been worked on before, I had mine fixed locally once just to have it die 3 months later. The seal is broke where the screw is that pops the cover open. I thought I read somewhere they won't take it if that sticker is broke. I would just call them but I'm at the hospital tonight for my wife's cancer surgery and forgot my phone at home. Thanks guys

Honestly, I think the only time they care if the system has been worked on by someone other than them is if it were still in-warranty as someone besides a Sony repair person opening it during the warranty period would void said warranty.

But I don't think it should matter.

If I had the extra $$$ I'd probably just dump the 60gb I bought and get a refurb slim from them, though my one buddy had them send him a number of refurbs last gen when he sent in his PS2 for replacement and each one was worse than the last. So test those refurbs immediately when you get them in.

Yeah I did a reflow on my launch system and they took it with no problems.

That's why I'm not messing with this new refurb that much, not sure what I want to do with it. I used the 2nd one and it died in less than two months (Uncharted 3 killed it  ) so I know I need to stress test this unit, just haven't taken the time to do so yet.

I know it's not a game for everyone, but try out GTA IV with it. That made all of my PS3's have their fans kick into at least the middle setting. Get a lot of stuff going on on screen(explosions, etc) and that should give you an idea if you have a winner or a dud.

I think it depends on the system. I got my 60gb fixed for $80 when it crapped itself and then I sold it for $300 after I pulled all my data from it including my ps2 saves.

Could be useful for someone who has all their data backed up and doesn't want to hassle with fixing it. Some people on SD were saying they got them to take the 40/80gb.

BTW thanks for the price update, I went ahead and edited the article.

I'll do that or just wait until I get Uncharted 3 back and tax that mother, thing is I'm getting tired of D/Ling all of my PSN content over and over. Even with a really good connection it still is a ***** to grab 25GB of data. I might explore Ebay (unless someone has a better option) and try to get as much as I can out of it or just give it to my brother and get my slim later down the road. =/

That's the only thing that annoyed me about switching from the 40gb to the 120gb slim I had when they first came out with it. I still haven't re-downloaded everything I used to have on my 40gb or even my 120gb on the 160gb I currently have. This includes at least 1-2 PS1 classics, Rag Doll Kung Fu and a buncha other crap.

I gave them my 40gb and paid $100. Unfortunately they just refurbished my system. I was hoping for a refurb slim because it has built in wifi, but this is better than nothing.

I'm pretty sure the 40gb models had built in wifi on them, since I used to use my 40gb upstairs in my house on my wireless connection I had set up at the time.

I just find it funny that Sony is excluding the non BC models from this $100 swap program. I guess maybe they wanna get the fully BC models all back via this method so they can continue with gouging on the PS2 re-releases, eh?

I'm guessing that it costs more to repair a bc model than it does a non-bc model. My most recent refurb lasted a month and I'm getting a slim this round.

Thank you. I didn't even realize that. That kind of made my day now. :)

Yes, this deal is definitely still alive. They've upgraded to give you a 160gb ps3 slim instead. It only works for 60gb and 20gb, and some 80gb models. I JUST sent mine in today. They're going to make sure it's not all messed up and send me a 160 for 100 bucks. check out the slickdeals thread on it.
They're going to make sure it's not all messed up.
What does that mean? I thought the exchange was for a defective/dead PS3.... so wouldn't that mean it's "messed up"?

By messed up, i mean they're going to make sure that everything is there. the serial number hasn't been modded, the original hdd is in there, and there isn't excessive modification inside the system. There's some people that have reported that sony accepted the exchange even though the warranty stickers were removed. My stickers were removed, we'll see how this goes.

Hey guys I was searching around on the internet and saw this post, not sure how reliable it is but the person is claiming that Sony will replace your ps3 if it is broken for a 160gb slim console for 99 bucks, not sure but its worth a try if your ps3 is broken, ill paste what the post said here. Hope it works for some of us CAGs too.

"My original, 40GB PS3 crashed a few weeks ago, no Power whatsoever.
I called Sony Support and they offered to fix it for $179, or REPLACE IT no questions asked for a 160GB Slim PS3 for $99.

The rep said this offer is valid for ANY existing PS3, working or not and it includes shipping your old PS3 (in a box provided by Sony), and the replacement PS3 both ways. I was especially surprised that the turnaround time from first call was only 8 days (with overnight shipping for each of the steps).

Called Sony at 800-345-7669. "

They will replace it for a new one or a refurbished one? I'm guessing you send the body only, and they give you back a refurbished body.
It's a refurb. You'd never get a new system with this "upgrade", and it's only covered with a 90 day warranty.
Bummer then. I have a 60GB that I had fixed by GopherMods. That gave me an additional year which wasn't too bad but I'm going to break down and just get a new one.

Heck, I'm more concerned with moving saves over. Are there any decent articles/tutorials on moving content over?

copying saves is the easiest thing to do. Hit triangle on the save file and then hit copy. If you have a HDD device hooked up you'll see it as an option to copy it to.

My 60GB which I sent to Sony in July of 2008 for a disk error repair just gave me the YLOD today. I got a lot of use out of it since 2008 but I really play a lot of PS2 games. Could I still opt for getting a 60GB refurbished model? When I sent it to them in 2008 they sent me my original system back but This system is now almost 7 years old. I'd like to take my chances with a 60GB refurbished model if I can...

what was offered to me was either 170 or 180 or so to repair my 60 gig or get a refurb or I could pay 99 for a 120 gig. I opted for the 120 g but actually got a 160g system with the newest chips.

So let me get this right I send in my broken 60GB ps3 and 100 dollars and i'll get a refurbished slim? but will they pay for shipping that is my main question?

Yes, shipping is included.

There's a huge thread about this on slickdeals. Better more current info over there. Yes, they now give out new 160gig and just recently started accepting the 80gig MGS4 (though the price is $129 instead of $99 like all other eligible models)
