this was a Craigslist deal. it's not extraordinary, but i thought it was cool getting a brand-new, newer release for my used (though mint) CoD2.

i considered that. i drove to his house to meet him, came inside and hung out for just a couple minutes. he was playing 360 and had a long row of games -- almost all of them open, save for 2: Dead Rising and a CE Prey. i figure if they were stolen, he'd have like 50 of them all in a row. he seemed to legitimately want to just trade for something else. i don't know, but he didn't appear to be the type that loves to swipe, so... yeah.

LOL He wouldn't have 50 of them. How could he steal that many? Still though it seems werid he would trade a brand new release game for something old and used. This game was even 34.99 at CC today and tomorrow. Granted this dude was no CAG :)
EDIT: By the way your avatar scares me :(

well, not 50, but if he's swiping them, i figure there'd be 2 or 3 of some titles, and more of them would've been sealed. if it was stolen, then he's a dirty, wretched dick. i'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt in this case, though. looked like he had a job and money, and he wasn't a teen or anything.

and the avatar's a topical thing (wouldn't my face be red if that was me!). i figure once enough people complain about it, i'll switch back to Heather from SH3. but i love anything that "promotes".....

Let me get this straight.. you saw a deal on an online message board that you thought was too good to be true, so not only did you go to his house, you also went in this dude's house and hung out for a minute? Wow.

Well, good deal either way.

too good to be true? no way. as evidenced by my original post ("it's not extraordinary") i merely found it to be a decent deal and took advantage of it. i had to go somewhere to meet him, and his personal residence was as good a place as any. we could've met in the mall or something, i agree, but i had his home address, rang up my parents (who live about 5 minutes from it) and gave them the address and phone number, just in case. i scoped out the street carefully before exiting my car, and found many people outside -- a couple washing their car, and a guy working in his garage, literally next-door.

i knocked on the door and the guy (about my age, mid-20s) answered it. we exchanged games at the door, but i pointed out to him that he might like to test the game before i took off; he said he trusted me, but invited me in and said he'd check it real quick anyway. everything was set up in his living room, right by the front door, and after the title screen came up, we talked for a minute or two more about 360 games, and i thanked him and left. i didn't grab a soda and relax on the couch, if that's how it sounded.

nothing made me nervous or suspicious at any time. if anything, i had 25lbs on the guy and my AFCK in my pocket if things really went south, so if anyone should've been doubtful, it was him. he was a nice guy, and everyone was happy.
Well, the good thing is that you're alright and you got a great deal. Enjoy Dead Rising, it's awesome.
Agreed, he could have raped you. for the game.

XD

Did the guy, by any chance, look like this?

Well, if you decide you want to get CoD2 again before the end of the day, Circuit City has the GotY edition for 35 bucks. Or grab a CC ad and price match it at Wal mart. I PM'd N3 because its on sale too.

"Is that CoD in your pants? Or are you just happy to see me?"

I hope your being sarcastic. Because, a new Scorch would really scare me.

are you coming on to me? 'cause i don't have CoD2 anymore.

An AFCK? (Googled=knife, like anyone knows what that is off-hand), chances are he would have a gun if he wanted to rob & rape you.

The trade is funny in 2 ways:

1. If he had more copies of it, do you really think he would have them out for you to see? He probably got an extra copy so he tucked his away during your visit, not that there's anything wrong with that. (LOGIC TIME: if I have an open mint copy of a game already and acquire an extra sealed copy, I'll trade the sealed one to get a better trade offer).

2. If it was stolen, do you really care? Should we really care? I wouldn't care. If "don't ask, don't tell" works for the U.S. Army, it should work for retail, too.

yep, knife, and i don't carry it for self defense, as i'd just end up getting killed. never hurts to have a last-ditch option though! if he did have a gun, i'd be boned, but i'm still here so yay!

and if it were stolen, and i knew it, i'd be mad. i don't condone theft, and i'd rather not be a party to its proliferation. and if you saw the gigantic row of various titles he had, you'd agree that yes, if he had more than one of several games, they would be there in plain sight.
With all the 'interesting' posts on CL you never really know..
You have a point. I read an article somewhere that a certain city (forget which one) was having a problem with people posting "deals" only to set it up just to rob people...

yep. it's actually happening all over, apparently. they tell you to meet them somewhere public (but not populated), and then they rob you (usually at gunpoint). meeting on the corner of such and such at 11pm should be a tip-off, but some people don't care, i guess. it also has to do with the deals: a $50 Xbox 360 is probably going to end bad, etc...

Its not suprise that its happening more and more often everywhere. If I dealt with someone for a deal thri Craigslist, I'd make it a really public place.

yeah; for me personally, i gauge each deal on a number of factors. for instance, i bought a GBA SP w/Final Fantasy Tactics for $10 (quick deal brag!) from some lady on Saturday. we spoke in e-mail, and then on the phone. i brought 3 other people with me (though not because of the deal, but because we were already hanging out) so that made me a little more confident. found her apartment complex (there were literally 20-30 people hanging out, mostly kids running around and a few supervising adults) and knocked on the door. she dealt with me at the door, and didn't ask me in, which was wise of her. not that i'm some psycho, but i very well could have been.

CL is like anything really. you can't be afraid of everyone all the time, and there are still good people out there. you just have to use your best judgement and take precautions where you can. hell, people get robbed/shot/killed/raped coming out of their house when they leave for work/school in the morning, but you can't just hide inside all day.
