two questions about Computer Voice Chat

Hey all, I'm about to begin a DnD campaign with some friends who live a couple states away. We are going to use virtual tabletops for graphics and we're trying to decide which online phone service to use for talking. Right now I'm thinking Ventrilo or Skype, although any free service is fine if you guys know of a better one.
The one thing I'm hoping to find is a service that allows you to perhaps click a button on the PC and only send your converstaion to one person for a brief time, can this be done?

The second question, do you guys have any suggestions for cheap-reliable headsets. Doesn't have to be too cheap, or too good, but something affordable with good quality would be nice. Or just tell me the cheapest one I won't get frustrated using please.

oh yeah one more question, does it matter if it's a USB connection or just a plug into the hole one? I mean does quality get better by using a USB connection?

I believe teamspeak is free to use. One word of advice though, set a hotkey for the mike, dont leave it on voice activated. nothing is more anoying than listening to someone breathing deeply, burping, or coughing on the mike.

Both Ventrilo and Teamspeak offer private conversation one-on-one.

Both are good although their interfaces are a tad different. Go wit TS to get used to it then Vent when you can afford to host it.
