Two years and no official Arcade Stick!!!

Will D Thrill

CAGiversary!
Get with the program MICROSOFT!!! It's going to be two years since the 360 launch and still no official Arcade Stick!?!? WTF!!! I've been needing one ever since launch practically. Anyone who has played Zuma a lot can attest to the wearing out of the left analog stick on a controller that is designed for precision gaming, this is not acceptable.

The reason I'm even making this thread is because of a great game called Pac-Man CE. This is one of the best Pac-Man games ever made yet we are left to play this game with ONE THUMB on an analog stick. This is not a game that you can pause every time your thumb starts to slip off or crrep towards the edge of the stick. I had the same problem with Sony's analog sticks in FPS's because they are mushroom capped that further promote 'thumb creep' across the analogs tip.

I don't know how many times in Pac-Man CE I have pointed DOWN and have went BACKWARDS or any other direction than the direction that I THOUGHT I was pressing. I need an arcade stick that I can get a nice PALM on and jam into the direction I want to go. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!! This precision zone is perfect for FPS's and other modern games but is too small of a control radius to play these classic titles with.

There's only ONE arcade stick on the market and it's a joke. What us gamers need is a full size fighting stick with TWO JOYSTICKS (one on each side of the buttons) and throw in a medium sized tracking ball just for a bonus. I would easily pay up to $60 for this controller and I wouldn't have to ruin my 360 controllers to play arcade titles AND I would have a better gaming experience because of it.

Thank you for allowing me to vent, I feel a little better now.

You are never going to get a a fighting stick with two joysticks and a trackball...it is not a realistic request.

There is the DOA4 stick

and the VF5 stick coming this year:

This is the PS3 version:

Isn't the DOA4 stick hard to find?

The VF5 stick was at E3 too, right? I remember reading an article. It looks sorta small and compact, but it looks like it'll do the job.

The DOA stick is really hard to find. And while the buttons and stick are good, I really don't like how... not quite sturdy the stick feels. Woulda preferred something more like the Tekken stick.

But yeah, we need a decent fucking stick on the system because the controller is completely worthless for anything that requires precision.

That DOA4 stick is so Rare it's ridiculous, in fact I've never seen one in real life. I do agree that the VF5 is easily more feasable (which I'll probably pick up) but it's still not an official Arcade Stick for XBLA games. Ever since launch it has just seemed so obvious to me that MS could really exploit/deliver on XBLA accessories. Instead they did a less than half assed job at face plates and wireless headsets but was able to put out an impressive yet nicely priced force feedback wheel.

On top of that they've jumped on the Wii craze and developed that five button Scene-It controller (which I think is a good idea BTW) but still showing no user interface love the one of their (supposedly) biggest branch of the 360.

EDIT:
Oh and that VF5 sick is made by Hori (which is awesome BTW) but it's still an outside party. I would love it if MS could make a deal with Hori to make a custom XBLA controller since they seem to be way too busy with their software titles and console hardware issues at the moment. Hell they could even have a XBLA bundle that includes the stick and the XBLA insert volume # here at retail. These bundles usually don't sell well but it makes consumers want to purchase more of that companies product at retail when they see these things on the shelves (at least it does for me).

Just strap yourself in and perform your cabinet shaking moves just like at the arcade!

huh? what's the difference if hori or MS via Hori makes the stick? Hori is a great company, the best U.S. distributer of arcade sticks, hands down. the doa stick (and VF5 stick, since they're the same thing) is great for arcade titles. just wait to get a VF5 stick.
Is their an adapter for the 360 that lets you plug in PS2 controllers? I have a killer Namco arcade stick I would love to use.
I was just thinking the same thing.. I have one of those two.. great controller. :)

there is, but it's $80. I forget what it's called.

In regards to using the VF5 stick for arcade titles you are instantly limited to games that use one joystick. Any kind of dual stick game like GeoWars type gameplay instantly are off the list although those aren't even a big deal to me.
What about this thing?
That's the piece of crap that I don't want. I've never played with it and I can't remember the review that I read about it (don't remember it being great though) however it's basically a PVC pipe stuck over top of the current analog stick whith no controller surface area (I could modify my current controller for 10 cents and achieve that). I need a joystick and some surface area. :D

It seems that the VF5 is going to be the best bet although not perfect.

I use the VF5 stick with, well VF5 (and Tekken) on my PS3 and I can attest that it's _THE_ controller to use for VF5 and fighting games in general.

I love the thing, and it's built like a tank. Well worth the price. (It does have its non-fighting limitations, but most sticks do these days the way the controllers themselves have evolved.)

It takes very little time to get used to it, too. If you've played any arcade games in your lifetime, this stick becomes second nature after a few rounds.

Thanks for the quick review/recommend.
No problemo. I have found that the controller is woefully inadequate for some moves in VF5 (and I can only assume it's the same for the upcoming 360 version). They're not impossible to pull off with a standard controller, but the button layout of the VF5 stick makes it _so_ much less of a pain... and when fighting, it's always best to concentrate on fighting, rather than futzing with weird button-presses. :)
I was just thinking the same thing.. I have one of those two.. great controller. :)
I started a thread about such a product in this forum. its called the 'XFPS 360'. Lets you use PC Mouse & KB or any ps2 controller or peripheral.

The Hori stick doesn't cut it if it's not wireless.

OP is totally right. Get with the damn program Microsoft.
And fix the DPAD while you are at it.

They'll never fix the dpad. :) They think it's good enough... it's survived many iterations of the original XBox controller... and now it's n the 360. I guess they're leaving it to the 3rd party folks to fix it.

The Hori stick has a long enough cord that it's usable... I don't mind that the Ps3 one doesn't have wireless (would've made it a bit too expensive, I think.)

This stick is not going to be in danger of getting yanked out of the USB port... if it is, you've either fallen out of your chair, or you're superman. :) It's a big stick... A surprisingly comfortable lap-sized controller. ;)

And since it's so large, wireless really isn't going to enhance the portability of it at all... I don't see anyone roaming about the room playing VF5. :)
OP is totally right. Get with the damn program Microsoft. And fix the DPAD while you are at it.
Well that was my second rant but I decided not to include it with this posting. Just trying to take baby steps ATM. Hey, if Sony can add rumble to their SixAxis I'm sure 360 owners can get a D-Pad upgrade. "Hey MS, call SEGA and let them teach you how to make a great D-Pad." Actually that goes for the industry as a whole. Call SEGA, Genesis D-Pad FTW!

Nah, not the Genesis D-Pad, the 2nd Gen Saturn D-Pad. I've used that thing for 4-5 hours at a stretch playing X-men vs. SF and never had a problem or a missed move.

Back on topic though, the last "official" arcade stick I can recall came from Sega for the DC back in 1999/2000, I don't think MS is looking into it. The Hori one's are more than adequate.

I'll buy a wired Hori stick but I won't be happy about it. I hate fiddling around with wires.

Sega D-Pad is good and IMO the one on the Wii Classic Controller is also acceptable.
Never liked the Sony ones though. Maybe MS figures 'Hey if people were OK with the Sony ones WTF?' :)

I don't know if I need a new arcade stick, but I need something. Not exactly a fighting game fan but even doing things like spells in castlevania piss me off when you just can't get it right on the DPAD or the Analog Stick. Idk if a fighting game stick would help for that or just a third party controller. I'm kinda into fighting games so....

IF the controller had a decent DPAD, a lot of people would just use that and not need a stick. But there is nothing wireless with a good DPAD and if you are going to get the wired Hori controller you might as well get the stick when it comes out instead.

....wired Hori controller?
Anyone know whether there are gonna be two hori sticks? The GS site lists a VF5-branded one, as linked by Cheapy, but Hori showed one at E3 with general 360 branding/coloring (this would be the closest we'll get to an official stick, I'm guessing).

Either that guy has large hands or that's one small joystick knob. I know, I'm being extremely picky but these things just seem like common sense to me.

MS just thinks it's going to be used to give squad commands or change your goggle vision so I'm sure they put no effort into it as a working, fully functioning control input.

WORST CONTROLLER EVER

I don't know about you guys but i'm buying this for Lumines... damn d-pad sucks and the analog is even worse for lumines... that being said it probally will improve all my arcade games... except in Bomberman, stupid trapping myself in with my own bombs.

I don't suppose the Hori stick has any kind of reverse switch so you can use the stick with your right hand. That's what I'd prefer for XBLA games like Pac-Man.

Lefty's all over the world would rejoice and would have to break their right handed playing bad habits.

Got a screwdriver? You can prolly flip that stick around in about 5 minutes.
