So I stopped in Ultimate Electronics today with the g/f to check out TV's in my never-ending quest to get a big-screen TV for a reasonable price (I am convinced that if I wait long enough, the deal will come to me).

I ask the guy "When is the best time to buy a TV" and reference black Friday as an explanation of what I meant. The guy says "Well, right now actually - since we're closing this store in June and all of these TV's will be probably be gone within the next couple of weeks".

According to this guy, U.E. is closing 1/2 of their 60+ stores. He claims to be authorized to haggle prices, especially if you want to bundle a surround sound system, DVD, etc. IMO, they are WAY overpriced to begin with, but I plan to do some research on what they have and see if I can get a reasonable deal.

Anybody here work or know someone who works for U.E.? Anybody know how much they can haggle? Seems like there is a new "where can I get a cheap big-screen TV" thread every couple of days, so I officially (unless someone else has already posted) unleash the hounds of CAG to pester and badger Ultimate Electronics into giving away their giant TV's for CAG prices!

I was wondering myself if Ultimate Electronics will be having a fire sale since they are going out of business. I'm looking to purchase an audio receiver and speakers, so I'll probably check them out this weekend.

Ultimate Electronics is closing many stores.

This is sad, because they are a (imo) a top notch place compared to Best Buy and Circuit City.

Also, they are not overpriced. Not even close. Everytime I went to buy something from them I would be able to get it magnitudes cheaper from them over anyplace else. They even beat most of the internet prices I could find. They may seem overpriced because they carry higher end equipment then Best Buy or Circuit City.
i dunno about UE, but this is a nice deal on a big screen tv:

http://www.outlet.philips.com/b2c_redesign/b2c/menuHandling.do?query=30PW850H99&shop=OUTLET

359 shipped for a 30 inch phillips HDTV widescreen

not bad, its been going in and out of stock for the past week.
Nice price. But it's not a new TV and I refuse to buy Phillips products after purchasing a DVD player from them and the would not stand behind the warranty they had created. I had to get the BBB to straighten them out.

I have never actually bought anyhting from UE, but they are a better service to the industry. They have very knowledgeable employees and do have very competitive prices, if you compare shop, and will match any price you can find. They just don't sell the customer grabbers like DVD's and Cd's or lower end equipment. Their advertising is very lacking as well. Them filing for for bankruptcy is bitter sweet, since I can now haggle for nicer price on a TV they are one less competitor or BB and CC which are retail whores.
