$6-$9 to cover an expensive media format (as compared to a DVD), licensing of the movie, packaging, marketing and vendor mark-up?

They should of used regular dvds from the getgo. They sell alot more PSPs if they did.

If you have a Sam Goody closing near you check it out. Mine had a ton of umd flicks left on clearance.

Ummm yeah - that would just still leave the slight problem in FITTING DVD's into the otherwise small form factor of the PSP !?!?!?!

What the fuck are you talking about :) ? Regular DVDs on a PSP.

If it was too expensive to make profit by selling at a cheap price like that then they shouldn't have bothered to begin with. I already don't have enough room for my dozens of dvd's. UMD's just would cost me more money and take up more space.

And many people can't afford $60 for a new release Xbox 360 game, and many people have full shelves of Xbox 1 games they own... so they shouldn't sell 360 games at all?

This thread has suddenly become full of random compleletly senseless remarks.

Well, technically they could've used the MINI DVD's. You know, those smaller CD's that are about half the size of a normal DVD. However, UMD is just WAY overpriced. I'm glad it's the death of UMD movies.

have you ever heard of a thing called mini dvds? of course they would hold less, but still wouldve been a cheaper alternative.

Hence "from the getgo", they could've made it a little bigger to accomodate a wildly popular media type. It's not like a PSP is so small you can fit it in your pants pocket anyway. They should've spent more time designing a way to use dvds in as small a form factor as possible instead of creating more designed to fail proprietary crap. With all its other features, I would've bought one long ago.

Yea, but. How long would it take for someone to modify their PSP to eject razor-edged DVDs?

Plus they couldn't do that AMAZINGLY AMAZING commercial where everyone threw the PSP at each other like it was a diseased hot potato! OH THE HUMANITY!

Gotta agree about the senseless remarks as this is one of them. This comparison doesn't fit. People, myself included, will not purchase a DVD for a portable system that is $5 more (hell, $5 less even) than the standard side media. That's just insane and was/is a horrible marketing strategy.

I have to say that if the prices don't drop to $10 or less, most people will not purchase UMD movies in the same light as they do standard DVDs. For example, I just picked up King Kong yesterday for $15. There's no way I would pay that for the UMD since it a) limits the viewers (not may people would crowd around to watch it) and b) my setup at home helps warrant a $15 experience. The UMD would only (for me) be used when traveling a distance long enough to enjoy the whole movie.

For me, I'm going to purchase a 2 or 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo and copy my movies over and watch them when need be. This way, I have the comfort of enjoying them at home or, if needed for travel, can have the luxury of taking them with on long trips.

Just my $.02

I can fit my PSP in any one of my pockets easily. Dockers, Jeans, Cargo pants, it's a easy fit.

Bite me

UMDs should have come bundled with the standard DVD for a $5 markup or something. They would be flying off of the shelves!
UMD movies were the most stupidest thing ever yet didn't they still sell well?
Actually I think GBA videos were a much worse idea. Wow, $20 (initially) for two episodes of a cartoon!

That is good idea that one anime company did. I forget Anime it was but for 22 bucks you get a dvd, umd and the soundtrack.

i kind of like UMD movies, they're too expensive but if you're going somewhere you can carry more video and at full native resolution than you can even with a 2gig memory stick. That said i only have one UMD movie but I'd love to grab some on clearance if any of you CAGs can give the heads up that would be great.

They should have bundled them with the Xbox 360.

But only the premium edition.

Was this supposed to be funny? :whistle2:s

I don't know, this sentence comes a close second to "the most stupedest thing ever".
Was this supposed to be funny? :whistle2:s
It was sarcasm....a joke on how the 360 was only being sold to people if they bought a bundle and/or a bunch of shit with it....

I personally like UMD's on my PSP. I agree they are a little pricey, probably why I only have Snatch and Wedding Crashers, but bring on the price drops. There are about 10 more I would get at a lower price.

If Sony's smart enough, they should gather up all the big movies companies and open up a download service for the PSP akin to Itunes. It already has plans for Dloadable games, why not Movies and Music. Now that could be huge, if it was done in the correct manner.

I saw dumb & dumber UMD today @ the clearence BIN... $6.99

Luv the movie, but the whole UMD video is just stupid... I don't know many people with PSP system, but I can say non them own a UMD movie... when price drops to $1-$2, I'll pick up some anime...

Where about ?

I agree they are overpriced but not stupid they look great on the system and encoding and actually getting something that looks close and retains audio sync etc is problematical.

I prefer to just transfer a DVD over to keep the aspect ratio perfect. I have a few UMDs that I got on sale and they do look good, but with no extras that the DVD has, adjusting the ratio so it fills the screen - I would never get one at or even near full price.

Um, I hate to be mean, but what the hell do you think a UMD is?

It is a mini-DVD in a plastic shell, dumbass!

mini-dvd's are 8cm and have a cap of 1.5 GB
UMD's are 6cm and have a cap of 1.8 GB

so they are obviously not the same thing.

Those GBA videos (pokemon, etc.) actually did quite well, even at that price.

The only UMD set I own is the Family guy Season 1 and 2: mainly because it's relatively cheap at Best Buy, includes all of the extras as the DVD set, and it's something I'll actually be compelled to watch random episodes of (as opposed to a movie that I'll watch once).

Yea, Family guy vol 1 & 2 would probably be the only UMD's i would buy if i didnt have them on dvd. Best Buy has the DVD for $40.99, or the UMD for $29.99. Probably the only case you'll see for a while where the UMD is cheaper than dvd.

Just got back from Sam Goody, all their UMD movies were on sale for $6 each. Also, gamestop had Family Guy Vol 1 & 2 for $24.99 used, and BEavis & Butthead Mike Judge Collection (24 eps) for $9.99.

UMD's only sold well at the start because it was something new and fresh, and we all know how the general public reacts to most things "new and fresh"

Once the novelty wore off, people realized that there were better and cheaper ways of getting movies on your PSP (1 gig memory card for example), and watching a 2 hour movie on the PSP wasn't exactly the greatest idea ever.
Has Wal-Mart dumped UMD already? I was there tonight and couldn't find them in their usual section.
They were moved over to the DVD section somewhere. Mine just dissapeared. I expect to see them re-appear with cheaper prices.

Can someone tell me if this applies to Fye's too?

You can get a nice deal on UMD or PSP UMD GAME
by using the $10 off Google checkout.
I bought some new released UMD from dvdempire for $13 shipped
and X-men 2 PSP for $24 and $14 for Virtua Tennis PSP from CDuniverse
Can someone tell me if this applies to Fye's too?
Nope, it was part of Suncoast/Sam Goody's out of business sales.

For a handheld device using DVD would be like attaching a five pound fidhing weight to each unit. It would severely reduce the usability as a portable.

Mini-DVD isn't a solution either. It lacks sufficient capacity and is still too large.

Also Mini-DVD, like DVD, is designed to use without a shell (or caddy as we used to call them in the early CD-ROM days) and that requires greater durability of the disc itself. Consequently the disc is heavier and takes more power to spin. Reducing power draw was a big part of the UMD design.

The big problem with UMD is that Sony simply believed there was a far biger market than actually is for people who spent a lot of time on public transportation but have the money to spend for this form of entertainment. A full price game with high repeat playability is a far better value.

Part of this mistake was trying to promote UMD with the glamour of simultaneous releases alongside the DVD version. If UMD versions trailed the DVD by a year the studios would have much more modest profit goals and that would allow for reasonable retail pricing. A single feature film on UMD should be $9.99, which the DVD market shows as being perfectly viable for a property that is long since in profits and whose DVD sales aren't going to affected much by UMD's presence. Things like a TV season box set could run higher but again has to limited to things that seen a major price drop on DVD. It would be too soon for 'Lost' but recently the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' box sets are supposed to have seen a big drop. They made huge money on those who had to have it at the higher price and are now seeking the wider market.

UMD movies should follow the same path and be looked upon as an additional format after the title has done all the business it can at the higher DVD price point. Now that the novelty is long worn off, there is little point in offering the latest releases on UMD for that tiny wealthy audience compared to the response the same titles draws on DVD.

There is nothing inherently wrong with UMD beyond the price. The NES Classics were ridiculous at $20 but did well at $10. (And being tiny, still profitable.) Majesco's GBA Videos did a good amount of business as the cost of ROM made them profitable at around $10.

$10 these days is the price of novelty purchased on whim or a worthy investment if it means keeping the kids quiet for a long car trip. If I were in Sony's position I'd make $10 the price target for UMD movies and try to load up with titles that have good repeat viewing attributes. If Hong Kong would start producing combination kung fu/porn movies, that would be perfect. Level III stuff that can found is far too mild by our standards.

So the only places with price drops on them are Sam Goody and some other place?

Any places online/B&M offering sales/discounts on them.

I could go for some season stuff, like family guy, or anime.

But im a cheap-cheap ass gamer. I'm looking to spend $0.01-$5 or so a UMD.
