Unofficial Wii DVD Playback Now Available!

It looks like DVD playback is finally available for Wii, but it doesn't come from Nintendo and it will require you to have a modded console —like those Nintendo doesn't want you to have. Team Symbiote's hack looks simple, but requires you to start up from a CD and then change to the DVD. Not very practical but if it works as claimed it shows Nintendo can do it. So why the Big N doesn't give us DVD playback on Wii? Our thoughts and a poll after the jump.

The only reasonable explanation is that DVD playback will make the Nintendo more expensive or their margins less juicy, as it will require them to pay licensing fees. However, if it's possible to do this in software, one way to do it would be to release a DVD Channel in their Shopping Channel and get the final user pay those fees. Easy and painless for everyone, but

Hmmmm... when is the obligatory Wii Ware download coming?

Everytime I read these threads people jump in and start saying "The Wii doesn't need to be a DVD player" and "blah blah blah, you can buy a cheap one" or "I got 7 already".

Personally, I would love for them to release official software to allow DVD playback for the Wii, I'd buy it in an instant. I only have one dvd in my room and that is on my computer. I become a little worried when I have tons of wires from my tv so I don't have much hooked up.
Has any one tried it yet? Does it work?
It works. I have no reason to have my Wii as a DVD Player so I won't download the file.

Don't really care, I have a PS2 and a DVD player. It'd be nice I guess, but it's a stupid reason to hate Nintendo or the Wii.

Who cares.
It would only be able to output 480p if you have component cables. DVD players are dirt cheap and are built into nearly everything nowadays.

Like previously said, I don't feel like a game system needs to play movies.

I don't think i've ever sat around thinking of how nice it would be if my DVD player could play games. (other than Space Ace and Dragons Lair that is)
it is so ridiculous that the wii cant play dvd's

another reason i say fuck nintendo
Dude...

PlayStation 2
PlayStation 3
Xbox
Xbox 360

That's four consoles that can play DVDs. Add in that basic computers these days have DVD playback and that DVD players are dirt cheap these days.

Is it REALLY a necessity to have the Wii play DVDs if just about everything else can? Nintendo wanted to stick with their plan of keeping the Wii cheap. DVD licensing fees would up the price. Had this happened back when DVD was starting out, sure. One could complain. But when you have SEVERAL options to play DVD, it really doesn't matter anymore.

You all have good points...Plus I plan to buy a XBOX360 and the HD DVD Player to go along with it around christmas time, hopefully they'll have plenty of stuff on sale on BF.

I think it was more ridiculous that the gamecube didn't play DVDs than the Wii. At this point I don't really care. Sure, it would be nice as it'd be easier to bring to a different tv in the event you needed a DVD player somewhere, but it's not a huge deal.

Eh.. no biggie. I have an PS2 that I've repaired twice because that damn console is prone to breaking, but it can play DVDs mediocrely (sp). I have an Xbox and a 360 that both can play it. Multiple computers, a separate stand alone DVD player, an upscale DVD player, and several other standalone DVD players. You can go and find DVD players for $20 at this point. It's not hard to find one. They're all over the place.
