Hey all, just got an email saying I won the house of blues contest that gets you a signed cd, a t-shirt, and a ps2 and psp game. problem is, they require social security number, and a signed word attachment. I don't know if that is legit (I feel it isn't, cuz with a SS and sig. they can go for identity theft.) The email is as follows:

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

You have won a PlayStation DualPlay prize pack including:

(1) PlayStation 2 Videogame (at Sponsor’s discretion), (1) PlayStation Portable Videogame (at Sponsor’s discretion), an autographed lcd soundsystem CD, and a House of Blues T-shirt. The approximate retail value of the 1st Place Prize is $135.00. All prizes are non-transferable and no substitutions or exchanges or cash equivalents will be allowed except by sponsor.

All winners must be over 18. To obtain your prize, please fax to 323-769-4792. a signed affidavit (attached), SS # required, and a copy of photo ID (drivers license preferred).

Please make sure to initial the bottom right hand corner of each page of the affidavit. Also make sure that the copy of your photo ID comes through clearly through the fax, a tip is to lighten up and enlarge the copy.

i think someone else won the same thing here and got around about sending in the SS number
 
Personally, I wouldn't touch that with a 50 foot pole considering they would want my SSN. I was pretty pissed off that my undergrad school used my SSN for everything under the sun and tended to print it out on receipts that they would just toss into the trash before they started shredding them due to student outrage.

I'd probably toss that prize offer in the trash, myself.

Was this email just out of the blue, or did you actually sign-up for the contest?
 
check it out, but don't divulge your ss. As slidecage pointed out, someone else posted an e-mail like this less than 10 days ago.

I did sign up for the contest, its just the whole ss # thing freaking me out. I didn't find any other posts about this cuz I searched for Dual Play, not Dualplay... woops. Hmm, seems legit, but I don't know, also, the number's in friggin california (I think so at least), and I'm in illinois. hmmm
 
Cell phones have free long distance, most plans at least.

I wouldn't give my SSN# to claim a prize seeing as their is no need. Unless you are applying online for a loan, credit card, etc, there is no need to give your SSN# online at all.

I'd call them and tell them you are not willing to give them your SSN#, I'm sure you could still claim the prize.

Hmm, where did you sign-up for the contest? Was it at their official website?
 
I got the same email, and yes, I did sign up for this. I think I'll give em a call and see if there's a way around the SSN.


Edit: I dunno, this feels legit to me.

yeah, it was the official site. I've won other prizes in the past, that didn't require anything other than address, and the stuff they want is perferct for identity theft. That's what threw up a red flag. I'm gonna try calling them and see if I can get it w/out the ss #.
 
I got the same email last week. Another gamer on this site hs gotten his package. I will let you all know when I receive mine. Or if I dont. I did call the number and got a office building. I believe it was some sort of a lawers or something.
 
hmm, seems legit here too, but I just don't know if I'm being paranoid. I called, and the girl I talked to said that the SS # is required in case the company gets audited, so they have proof they did indeed send them out. I'm trying to find a number for house of blues I can call other than the one in the email though, to double verify and such.
 
The last winner told me it took about 2 weeks to get your prize. If they gave you enough time wait and I will let you know if I received it. It's been a week already.
 
SS #could be needed for report to the IRS that you won stuff and you need to report the value of your prize on the tax return.
 
Heh. I just won the exact same thing today, too. I also signed up when that drawing was here on CAG. I'm still a little paranoid. I'm thinking of writing a fake SS#. I realize it would basically throw me out of the contest, but I think it's worth a shot. (I do not want to give it out...)
 
It would take an awful lot more than a couple random games, a CD, and a shirt to get me to give my social security number to anyone. Good luck, guys. I'm staying far away from this one.
 
well, I called the local (Chicago) House of Blues and talked with the manager. He confirmed that the email address I recieved this from was indeed on his corporate list, and then he gave me a number to call if I had any questions, which is the number from the email. Thus, I now feel confident this is legit, and will do it. All others who got the email could probably do it as well.
 
Damn a lot of CAGs won this contest eh? Well you're lucky they emailed u about it today because they decided to email it 2 days before my deadline. I almost missed the damn deadline because of that. I think its legit. I got the email from the same person also.

I just received the email today and was kinda freaked out by this thread. After some research everything seems legit.

the SS# requirement is complete bullshit. They may need it if the prize is over $400, but if not, then they don't need anything more than a proof of identification such as a driver's license.
