UPDATE:Sony's version of Smash Bros coming

I'd been wondering about Sony doing this for years now, and I'm pretty surprised that it only just now may be coming to fruition. Definitely has potential to be a quality title, if done correctly. I call dibs on Toon Drake!
I can't wait to see what kind of characters we get in this. I'm hopeful for at least one Final Fantasy character.
I saw a "rumored" list including Lightning.

Honestly, I can't imagine many characters (and their movesets) that would be as imaginative as Nintendo's characters. I can see some character like Sly being unique, but characters from shooting games like Killzone or Uncharted seem too plain.

Oh, come on... Sony's got a ton of them!

Ratchet
Clank
Sackboy
Jak
Daxter
Kratos
Sweet Tooth
Sly(as you mentioned)
Cole Macgrath

Just to name some off the top of my head. I'd imagine all of those to be pretty diverse. The you could have:

Helghan Soldier
Nathan Drake(I think he'd be a great character, if only for the one-liners alone!)
Chimeran Soldier
Snake

Plus, then you could have some FF characters, some characters that are a part of cross-platform games, and characters from the past such as:

Cloud
Lightning
Tifa
Parappa
Spyro
Ape Escape monkey
Prince of Persia
A character from the team ICO games
Lara Croft
Crash

And the list could literally go on and on... The more I think about it, the more I think it's an excellent idea. I really hope it's true!
Id love to see a game like this from sony but i see it not being that good :(
I think they learned from the move heroes failure as what not to do with a good idea.

Yeah honestly, Saints Row 1 2 and 3 copied the good elements from GTA and finally got it right with 3. They kept the good and got rid of the shit.

I don't know why more companies don't do this. Just copy elements from a popular franchise, make it your own by keeping the parts people like, and get rave reviews for it (after a few iterations...)

LOL @ peoplle thinking Snake or Final Fantasy characters are going to be in this. Konami and Square-Enix aren't going to "lend" their characters out to an unproven, amateurish studio. You're only going to have 1st party characters, just like Move Heroes.

Depends on how much money Sony is willing to give them.

BTW, an obvious one that was missed is Nariko from Heavenly Sword. As far as I know, Sony owns the rights to that character.

It's just possibilities and speculation... Just as everything is at this point. I think what we were all saying is that it would work and it's something that we'd like to see. I don't think there'd be much of a problem with characters being lent out. The relationship is strong between Sony/Konami/Square so that's going for them, and I don't think Square would really care about quality at this point, just as long as they see profit. I mean, I'm a fan and all, but even I will admit that their quality has taken a nosedive as of late. Also, Snake's already been lent out once, so there's that.

It's funny that you mention that, because I had originally thought of that and wanted to put her on my list, but I thought maybe that was too obscure of a character for some. Either way, Heavenly Sword sword was great, and if such a game existed, she certainly deserves to be a part of it.

you guys forgot the classic guys.

Crash bandicoot & all his buddies
Spyro
PaRappa

maybe even old snake
modnation racers characters

if you look at the trailer on the webpage the op posted there is the metal gear mk2 walking around for a few seconds. So mgs4 characters are definitely in it along with who knows what other 3rd party characters

edit: there also seems to be a final fantasy sphere in the money pile also? Am I right or mistaken? Also some different type of guns from different games, killzone, resistance, uncharted, rachet & clank, others i dont know..?

edit: scratch all that I think that was a promo video for a general playstation commercial cause I found out a longer extended version with a crap load of third party characters in it (tekken, bioshock, cod) and was posted in october. So i guess that video isn't related to this. However still a very cool video. search "Micheal ps3 long live play kevin bulter version" to see it.

For the other companies this is actually a VERY GOOD THING as DLC money grabs for costumes & if there's overwhelming demand for one of their characters this could help rekindle interest in older franchises. Not to mention if a game like this really excels your going to see sequel after sequel. I just hope they get it right.

Hell yeah! And add in some Legend of Legaia, throwthemonthepsoneclassics, and I would buy it!

Well, just going through the list of Sony Developed games in the past 15 years or so:

Spike (Ape Escape)
Arc (Arc the Lad)
Buzz (from the various Buzz Games)
Kratos (God of War)
Cole McGrath (Infamous)
Spyro (Spyro the Dragon)
Ratchet and Clank (Ratchet and Clank series)
Sir Daniel Fortesque (MediEvil)
Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper series)
Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
Vahn (Legend of Legaia)
Dart (Legend of Dragoon)
Sackboy (Little Big Planet)
Jak and Daxter (Jak series)
Gabe Logan (Syphon Filter)
Alundra (Alundra)
Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot series)
Toan (Dark Cloud)
Nariko (Heavenly Sword)
Parappa the Rapper
Jaster (Rogue Galaxy)
Tomba (Tomba)
Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal)
Ico (Ico) or maybe Wander (Shadow of the Colossus)
Genji (Genji series)

I know that's probably more characters than what would be in a game, I would say (by going through the Sony games) these would be the best chances of who would be in the game.

I guess there's always the Helghast or Chimera, but I can't really see them being in it. Then of course there's the chance of Final Fantasy characters (Lightning would be my guess since Sony seems to be using her quite a bit) or Solid Snake (give me Cyborg Raiden if anything).

You're reaching for some of those characters. There's no way this will be as recognizable as SSB to anyone but the hardcore PS3 fans. I would expect to see characters like Crash and Spyro highlighted... Sackboy, maybe Snake, but Sony really needs to stick with more Mascot-worthy characters for the main event to get this to have any significant sell-through

A very interesting idea to say the least. The only thing is some characters might seem out of place though like Sweet Tooth and Kratos. When I think of Kratos, I expect to be ripping off some giant ass creatures head or something, and if this is just a Smash Bros. Clone, it will be odd.

It works for Nintendo because I mean for the exception of Fire Emblem, and Snake, Nintendo games don't really have a lot of killing involved.

Now what I would like to see is this be a combination of sony, square (highly unlikely because of Dissidia), Konami, etc. Basically make this game be Smash Bros. but everyone else.

For your information see... DreamMix TV World Fighters (developed by Bitstep and published by Hudson)

I have it and it isn't very good btw, even with all of the cool franchises present Optimus Prime vs. Solid Snake vs. Simon Belmont, without all of the fun you'd expect...

Except Sony doesn't own Crash or Spyro (while they were pushed into Mascot characters in the PS1 era) Universal owns them lock, stock and barrel. Which is why you'll never see Insomniac and Naughty Dog use the characters ever again (I have mentioned this before long ago), but figured I'd bring it up again for those not familiar with the ownership of either IP.

Edit: There's always Tiny Tank not sure if Sony owns the IP even though they published it.

C'mon, Wander from SotC? In the new HD version he can hardly hang onto the first colossus. He would get his ass kicked by even Sackboy.

It's a good idea and hope it's a good game but I hate smash brothers. It'd be interesting to see all the characters though.

what I fanboy dream about this game is the stages. Fighting on the back of a Colossus? Fighting on a airship from Patchwork Heroes? Dodgeing home runs in a MLB The Show level (lol)? If it is real I hope Sony leaves no IP unused. Parappa the Rapper. Demon's Souls. Flower. Wild Arms.

Who needs Final Fantasy characters when the lineup is already so deep.

How about Yuri from Shadow Hearts changing into different demons or Kevin Butler having different powers (depending on which department he's a VP of)...
