Updates may be causing three red rings
My friend and several users on GameFaqs are getting bricked consoles. Just stay away as long as you can.
Here's the thing the 360 has a huge failure rate. Then someone does an update. A few hours later console gets th ring of death. They then think "must've been the update." Bottom-line every time an update comes out people say it bricked their console.

I updated, and I'm running fine.
Oh and PS, the PS3 does have some small known errors. Yes they don't happen often but if they do, what can you do? Where can you go? Nothing, nowhere, you're left out in the rain until you can save up 600 more dollars to buy a PS3 .
Not to whizz on a good rant, but the PS3 warranty's one year. (It's a switch from the other Sony warranties... but hey... always an improvement.)

Yeah, I was about to post something about that but I decided to stop and shut my mouth about Sony hardware and that kind of information because I really don't know what I'm talking about in that area.

Then again, it was also a terrible argument in general because even if your PS3 is out of warranty and you get that problem chances are if you bought a new one you'd never get that the problem again. The console hasn't been out for so long though. It could've been a problem that Sony fixed but never acknowledged, the world will never know.. ( besides Sony ).
No. No one forgot. It's just that at this point we've all realized that updates aren't always the things bricking 360s. There are more variables to the 3RL situation. And there are more situations where the updates aren't bricking the 360s.
so what's your fucking point? People are reporting that after this update they are seeing the RRoD. Just like after other updates, more people than usual started seeing the RRoD. .It's a fucked up console, anything can happen to it. If you want to talk about variables, well, here's one that can be isolated--that's why it's post worthy. I may just not sign into live until I trade mine in for an elite...i'll just turn it on to copy my saves and play offline.

That last part just pissed me off to no end. Microsoft is not fucking getting away with ANYTHING. You're making it seem like we are all sheep here, sitting back and thinking that our 360s are going to live forever, or actually giving Microsoft sympathy for releaing a console that wasn't up to snuff the time it came out and years after it was first released. We KNOW this shit. We've KNOWN this shit. Microsoft is working to fix the problem, so they haven't gotten away with shit. I hate to throw this number around, I really do, but 1 billion dollars tells you exactly what Microsoft has gotten away with this console generation. So don't fucking tell me, on a forum where a thread about 360 repairs and support has reached 86 pages, that ANYONE on this forum who has bought a 360 is letting Microsoft get away with ANYTHING.

 (it's funny when people get heated on forums...even funnier when they're totally wrong.) yes, when people are denying that the update isn't causing any extra instances of the RRoD and saying that it's the users fault that they somehow got it after the update, there's denial in the air. i'm not saying you personally. all I came to claim was that it's worth making a post about and is a big joke when people deny the update can potentially cause problems. past updates have caused problems-- it's useful for everyone to know if a current one is and what the extent of the problems might be. who knows, the op could've been followed by a bunch of people saying they had the same experience.

and yeah, the extended warranty lets them get away without being sued.

what? where the fuck did that come from? i'm glad you acknowledged the warranty in your next post...but playing the fanboy card is just a sign of weakness and insecurity, imho.
Hay guyz, I see this ring - is this a problem?

Yes!!!! Classic!!
updated....no problems while playing NFS:MW except that I got busted *sigh
Zero, didn't know you played for the Cincinatti Bengals?
My launch console is still going good.
Better knock on some wood ;)

Updated my console, played some Carcassone and zero problems.

Not playing the fanboy card, and I wasn't referring to you. I didn't just throw that in there as a " fuck you" to Sony or anything. Somebody had mentioned something about wishing that the PS3 had better games or something like that, and I'm really sick of people even mentioning the PS3 in the topic of the 360 and reliability. We've heard it all before. The 360 breaks a lot and the PS3 doesn't. Yes, I am a bit insecure about these things. Thats just one of my problems. The last thing that I want to see in a thread about 360 failures is the PS3. Not saying it's a bad console at all. You didn't say anything about the PS3 so....

How was I completely wrong? And I don't recall me ever saying that this didn't deserve a thread. I was just saying that at this point maybe you should consider that something else caused the 3RL ( while considering that the update did it ) as opposed to jumping to conclusions at first. One of the main reasons I'd prefer that is that it causes panic among the whole community for something that may or may not have a negative outcome. I know I freaked out ( the insecurity thing ) when I read the first title as I had already installed the update. And your original statement said something about our poor memory letting Microsoft get away with broken consoles. Then you say that the new warranty prevents lawsuits ( letting microsoft get away ...). Don't think we had a choice in their warranty, so our goldfish like memory didn't exactly play a part in that. Unless I was told to go to a meeting that I forgot to go to.

PS. I am also weak :)

Ecks Dee.

Oh, and on topic though. For the first time, I thought an update may have ruined my 360 but it didn't. Like a few others mentioned, when the console rebooted, it stuck on the logo screen for a bit, but after about 30-40 seconds, everything was smooth.

I played on mine for a while after I downloaded it. However right after I downloaded it my system turned off, otherwise haven't had any problems.

Same happened here. Worried me for a second.

Yesterday I downloaded the update and everything was fine. But then my wife walked in and told me she was pregnant...coincidence?

Oh, and after downloading the update I had trouble connecting with a CAG for a Mario Strikers match. Beware Wii60 owners, beware!

See that children...READ THE EULA!!!

for some reason I go to update and it says that I failed to connect to xbox live. Tells me to go to support to figure out my problem and I go to settings and everything passes EXCEPT connecting to xbox live. When that happens is prompts the update which I click GO and of course the FREAKING thing says it can't download the update ARGH!

EDIT
Seems like MS has pulled yesterdays update. Ruh ROH

Yay. My coffin will be here in 5-7 business days. My 1 year warranty expired in July, so hopefully this is red ring related, and not some bullshit failure.

And I just got 2 games in the mail :(

service.xbox.com. You can get all the information you need there without having to call xbox hotline.

Maybe it's "support.xbox.com"

dl mine...had some studderance of logging in, and going from the green xbox logo to the blades screen but besides that it worked fine
Some people are just retarded. Seriously. How many consoles were going to get the 3 rings today anyway? Now when those people download the update and get it shortly after, lets blame the update? Did they fart sometime before the 3 rings too? Did they order pizza too?

DON'T ORDER PIZZA!!! IT GIVES YOU THE 3 RINGS!!!

It's a coincedence. Get over it.
So true.

I updated without problems.

I'm not hating on MS at all, been a 360 supporter since day one.

But I updated, console rebooted, and instant red rings. :whistle2:k

Yeah if you can get your console to show up on there. I've tried and even called them cause I get an error when I try to link my console on there and they told me, Sorry nothing we can do, but you don't need that site anyway, just call us.

My gears did freeze for the first time since nov after the update....

Its frozen for Splinter Cell and RS:V before but never in gears!

Right after I downloaded the update, my 360 could not recover my gamer tag. I was on the phone for about 2 hours with microsoft to see if they could help. Well they could not! So they are sending me a coffin for my 360, and I hope they can revive it.
The Sky Is Falling, also known as Chicken Little or Henny Penny, is an old fable about a chicken (or a hare in early versions) who believes the sky is falling. The phrase has also become used to indicate a hysterical or mistaken belief that disaster is imminent.
I know correlation doesn't necessarily equal causality and all that, but come on. This particular update didn't brick my 360, but after I downloaded the first Guitar Hero II update, my console starting freezing up immediately thereafter, and after about 3 restarts started giving me 3RL. I think it's a reasonable conclusion that the update is in some way responsible.

Are there any theories as to why this might be?

The 360 is a cheaply made console with cheap parts, poorly put together. Naturally they are more prone to breaking then a ps3, this is coming from a current 360 owner.

Wow... Since I've been enjoying my PS3 my friend has my 360 and it passed without a problem. :knock on wood:

I expect my 360 to last maybe a year or two while my PS3 I don't know how long but it will be a long time.

Oh yeah...

PS3 > 360

Oh yea, I get that they're not all too sturdy, I was just wondering specifically how an update may cause the system to brick.

Mine's updated just fine and I've been playing Forza 2 and F.E.A.R. since the update along with the usual XBLA tomfoolery.

I am curious. All the people who had red rings, did your system reboot after the update properly? I know that alot of us thought our system froze, but it just took about 30 or so seconds for it to fully reboot. I woud imagine that aybe something was being applied durring the "freeze", and maybe turning off the system killed it?
