usb 2.0 cards

So I am gonna get a USB 2.0 card installed in my computer since the stock ports are only 1.1. Now I'm wondering how hard this is to do? I know absolutely notihng about the workings of a computer but I'm fine with following instructions. Now USB cards fit into a PCI port, right? IS there any specific brands I should look for or stay away from? Thanks
 
Bump, cause I might do the same soon, now that I have a 20gig mp3 player, and USB 1.1 is noticeably slow. I wouldn't think switching the PCI card slot is any more involving than changing a video card, which I'm ok with...It's the front 2 USB ports (I think it's a "hub", whatever that is) I wonder about, like if I can change those at all. They are at the bottom of the front of my tower.
 
Yeah, they're usually just a PCI card. Very easy to do. Sometimes there are drivers, but often XP will just recognize it.

Humidore, are you asking if you can somehow change/replace the current USB slots on your motherboard to 2.0? If so, I don't think that's possible.

You know how some PC towers have USB ports on the front for convenience? Those are the ones I mean...They don't seem replaceable, but yeah, I was hoping...Ah well, thanks.
 
Installing a PCI USB card is a piece of cake. Just turn off your comp, open up your system, find a free PCI slot, stick it in, screw in the latch, then start your system up. Drivers may or may not be required after installation. Regarding the front USB ports, I think the only way to change those is through the motherboard. If you get a new motherboard which supports USB 2.0 they will often have jumpers you can connect to the front USB ports of your case (with a wire that runs from the case USB ports).
 
Going to Circuit City today and I was wondering if brand really matters. I was thikning of picking up this IOGEAR one for $20 but I want to know if it maybe won't work as well as some others. I heard somewhere that some cards will crap out on you. Thanks for the help.
 
I went to CC to get a USB 2.0 card in june, cost me about 40 bucks, only one they had. There pretty easy to install, just put it in, boot up and let it install it's drivers from the CD and done. Takes 5 minutes. Brand doesn't really mater, I got a NEC USB 2.0 card (If that's even the brand, I threw out the packaging a while ago).
