used 360 consol (want to purchase, not selling one)

I had posted this in the gaming discussion thread, but I guess that was wrong, so I am trying again here....... if this is the wrong place, tell me where to post it.


I have been listening to the podcast for about 6 months, I think i first found it through digg..... I have really enjoyed listening to the personal banter and stories. It is one of the highlights of my week.

anyway, I have long known that I wanted to own an xbox 360, but just have not gotten on with it - and now that GTA 4 is coming out - i want it now!

I am looking to save some cash by possibly buying it used, craigslist has some great deals (and no tax/ shipping).

the only potential problem that i am facing now is the reliability issue/ warranty coverage. With the failure rate as high as everyone seems to say it is, I don't want to get screwed in 3 months with the ROD. Does any one know if a warranty is transferable on an xbox 360? Does it all depend on the age of the system?

The best thing to do is purchase a 360 at Target and then get the 3 year protection plan. It should not be more than 40$ for the plan, but then again it is worth it on ANY expensive electronic you buy.

If it breaks, you take it back to target and they give you a whole new console.

no one else has any idea if buying a used Xbox 360 will have a warranty? if i needed repairs would i need the original receipt?
 
i bought a used 360 from a yard sale for 85 bucks. brought it home and yes, it RROD'd on me. i can't say for sure if it was previously registered, but i sent it off for the repair, and everything went fine, no one balked at it. that was months ago, and it still works great. considering how many used 360s are on the market, even at the retail level (GS, GC, etc.), maybe Microsoft doesn't care what name is on the registration; perhaps they just check the manufacture date on a given system and repair or deny based only on that?

Retail stores usually have some type of return defective policy just call them up and ask...as for sending a 360 to microsoft they might ask for an original retail receipt. Buying a used one disqualifies you from the warranty IF THEY ASK they might just let you send it after it is registered. Some things you need to pay more for if you want to be covered.

they definitely don't need a receipt. i've sent in both of my 360s without having to provide any proof of purchase. and the used one i bought certainly didn't disqualify me from the free repair.

Go to costco and buy it from their. FREE LIFE-TIME WARRANTY!!!

You can even exchange it in 4 years (when the next new generation of consoles come out) for a full refund!

I love COSTCO!!! (I only took advantage of them with a VCR/ DVD combo that I bought a few years ago, it broke, came in there with no box no receipt, got my monies, and bought the same thing for half the price) other than that I never did anything like that.

due to frequent abuse, Costco's policy has changed on this recently, and it's been discussed before that stores are now taking these types of returns on a case-by-case basis. the days of worry-free lifetime returns are, for the most part, over.

OP, if you go this route, be sure to ask your Costco what their exact return/replacement policy is on the 360 specifically.
 
all right, that was more like what I was looking for.

i think i am going get a used one, there are some deals that say how old the systems are, so i will keep an eye out for newer ones.

well, i went with a new one.... i called and emailed like 12 people of craigslist, only one was interested in selling and he would not come down on the price. I am not going to keep wasting my time contacting people that are either not interested or to lazy to take down their listings.

I just bought the one with the 20gb hd at target... also got the 3 year warranty - but i opened a target card and got 10% off, so that just covers a little more than sales tax. thanks for all the advice!
 
Craigslist is NOT a 'flea market' type enviro for ALL of us. Some of us like to make the actual amount we place ads for our stuff on there for.

I've had a newer pc(tower, keyboard and mouse)for sale for $250 for the longest time now. Every last slappy who responds is either a no show asshole who says they'll stop by to see it in person and never do or someone thinking I'm going to let it go for $75 just to give them a deal.

You want a flea market deal, go to a flea market. I look at CL as free ad space for my stuff that's in good shape that I wanna get some decent money for still.

Same deal with my Transformers, I had people from FAR AWAY from me responding to my ad on there, offering me HALF of what I wanted right off the bat.

It's just plain insulting and I bite my lip every time to not say 'fuck you' to each and every lowballer. Honestly, I wonder what these same people would think if someone did the same to them if they were offering something they were 'firm' on their price for.
 
if you have "price firm" in your ad, as i know you do, then yeah, i'm not gonna bother. but if you don't put that phrase in the ad, i'm definitely going to try to haggle.

and for the billionth time, IATCG, we all know you don't bend on your prices. i think it's in the TOS when people sign up for Cheapassgamer.

But, I just got a kick out of the fact that the poster above me felt like he could bargain with the CL posters who did respond to them. Many just treat the site like I do, like cheap/free ad space to try and sell our stuff for the price we want.

It's just outright insulting when the first reply to a CL ad is 'I want your item but how about this amount instead of the price you listed?'. At least be cordial and say 'hi I'm interested' and strike up a dialog before trying to be an ass and steal the item(s) from the seller for what YOU feel they're worth.

That's the main reason why I sold most of my guides to the local shop, since I received quite a few 'I'm only willing to pay $3 shipped per guide' PMs before about them. People aren't out to lose money to give someone a deal at THEIR expense.

It is the opposite for me. I made reasonable price on CL for people selling it at over ebay price. Too many people start using CL that it is not really worth my time.
 
I have had my share of those attempted scams pop into my inbox too, dmdragon. I just think it's sad too that so many will fall for them. I liked what the one person did to the one scammer, which a few people linked in the one thread about CL. The article was called P-p-p-p-p-p-powerbook or something along those lines.

As for me, I try to put in what I feel is a reasonable price, but I find that so many feel I'm being unreasonable. I had my 98 or so last gen games listed on there for a while, trying to sell them AS A LOT. I received so many responses saying 'I'd like to buy Baldur's Gate: Dark Alilance 2 and Futurama from your game lot. I'll give you $40 shipped for both. Or at least something along those lines.

I definitely don't mean to be repetitive about saying how insulting it is to be haggled in the first response to a CL ad of mine, but it's just so true and I wish there were a way to STOP IT.

they get the scammers back and try to get their names.. one guy even got the scammer to send back naked videos of himself holding the money or something. It's freaking hilarious

Also, haggling is one thing, but if you offer half of what someone wants, that's an insult. Most people who post there are expecting some kind of haggling, even if they put that it's firm they know people will still try.
 
I know people WILL try, which is why I'll add another $50-100 to the cost of the item(s) I'm trying to sell on CL sometimes. It gives them 'haggle room' and let's me say 'well, I could let such and such an amount go from the item' and still get what I want for the items.
 
if u dont mind refurbished ones a lot of sites like ecost.com sell them for under $250, but you should definitely consider buying a new one, cheapest is the Arcade. Atleast you know yours did not get the RROD. Even places like craigslist and ebay sell refurbished ones so I'd imagine you wouldn't know this unless they told you.
 
well, the guy that did not want to come down on the price was asking the same price as new but with COD 4, he did not have the receipt, and it was not a newer model. I just thought that it was not a great deal. i didn't try to haggle with everyone. i guess what could have helped would have been to offer an extra $5.00 or something for the seller to hold it for me - i think that would have created more loyalty. But, i didn't want to wait anymore.

One guy I emailed about his sale sent me a link for shit he was selling on eBay, that was the last straw for me. I do understand though about not wanting to barter, especially if you specify you wont in the ad, this guy didn't. Anyway, I am happy with my purchase and will keep using CL to look for local used games.
