Using Edge stored credit online

Apologies if this question has been asked before, but is it true that when you use your Edge stored credit at Gamestop.com, they charge you tax? I thought that they weren't supposed to charge tax when using store credit.

It varies from state to state. I believe in the Republik of Kalifornia, you are charged tax no matter what you buy and how you pay for it. In Ill-inois, you only pay tax on any outstanding balance that is not covered by the credit.
 
Thanks for the quick response, I live in NY and was just wondering about the discrepancy- using store credit in store did not add any tax to my pre-order of pokemon, using store credit online always seems to add tax regardless of whether it's a gift card or Edge credit.
Not a huge deal, just curious overall.
