Well it's that time of year again the Tax free weekend. If you don't know what it is the commonwealth to help parents allows stores to sell back to school items Tax Free (From the VA Dept. of Taxation)
  • In 2007, the Sales Tax Holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 3, 2007 and end at midnight on Sunday, August 5, 2007.
  • During Virginia's Sales Tax Holiday, purchases of school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and articles of clothing, including footwear, selling for $100 or less per item, will be exempt from sales tax. All retailers selling these items MUST participate in the Sales Tax Holiday. Sales tax exemptions do not apply to items selling for more than the amounts listed.
  • Retailers may also choose to absorb the sales tax on other items during the Sales Tax Holiday, but they are responsible for paying the tax themselves to the Department of Taxation.
However many stores use the last point as a way to get business. Last year Best Buy and Circuit City both had the whole store as tax free. So think about it your saving 5% (VA Sales Tax) so a big ticket item say a Laptop, HDTV, Or Gaming Console is "cheaper". One of the local Wal Marts has a Flayer advertising Computers and some LCD TV's as Tax Free items. Keep in mind the Sunday ad on what may already be a good deal now got better. I have no information on How BB and CC are going to do it this year if the whole store will be tax free again or just some items but this weekend could be the right time to get a good deal while sticking to the man.
