Not a very sexy topic but mine just died. Now is when I wish i had a conusmer reports subscription. I'm looking for recomendations or ones to avouid. I need one that does both hardwood and carpets. Thanks.

got a dirt devil reaction dual cyclone from target for $74 bucks on clearance last week...so far it works great and very easy to use...normally $150

Everyone I've talked to who uses vacuums regularly says Dyson is superior. The Hoovers are nice, but mine, which was $300 quit vacuuming after four years, and I only vacuum my basement and a couple area rugs, because I have hardwood everywhere. Not a good value. Dysons are guaranteed longer.

I have a Dyson, and it's alright. I replaced an Oreck, which was phenominal.

P.S. The vacuum cleaner is the ONLY thing I buy a product replacement plan for. I go through one at least once a year. 3 kids will do that and I like clean carpets.

Really? You liked your Oreck that much? How much do those run? Like I said, I only have a basement, which is the equivalent of two large rooms and a couple area rugs upstairs, so I don't need tons of attachments.
