[Video] CheapyD's Japanese DS Stylus Shootout

Interesting.

I enjoy some Hori extendables I had for the original DS, but now that I've upgraded to a Lite I don't use them.

The finger stylus would be great for Pokemon.

The Hori attachment thing is very cool, and I'm actually quite tempted to order for only $9 shipped.

Thanks for the vid, Cheapy. If I ever find the finger stylus I'll probably splurge and pick it up for Pokemon. And I might be forced to order the Hori attachment soon.

And FYI for other potential buyers, the Hori attachment comes in white, pink and black to match your DS (although black, my color of choice, is backordered right now).

Nice video Cheapy.

I've been using those plastic extendable styli by Hori. I like it quite a bit.. that is until it cracked on the extendo end (as opposed to the pointy end as is the case with Cheapy's.) Now it feels really loose and occasionally breaks apart while in use. :/

Thanks for the review. But one question, couldn't you just grow your index fingernail and that would essentially be the finger styli. Great video quality too, however the shine on your head made it look like someone chewed part of it off. The hori w/pen attachment does look like a slick buy, I might look into it as well. Thanks again for the reviews.

Nice Video Cheapy, Thanks for going out and showing us all of these. Keep the videos coming all of yours are very good.

Personally though I'm sticking w/ my Pokemon Stylus, very big and awkward, but comfy and essentially free.

I remember seeing pictures of the Hori Touch Pen Attachment before it came out, I thought it looked promising, but now that I've seen it in action I'm definitely picking one up.

Right now I'm using the Castlevania stylus that came with PoR, which I believe is the same as the extendable stylus that Hori makes. I'd be pissed if it cracked.

Would the second stylus you reviewed with the metal extension fit in the pen, instead of the one with the plastic extension it comes with? If so, I'd buy both and just swap it out.

Nintendo also sells an official set of the big, beefy, pen-type stylus(es) here in the US. They work really well, have a rubber grip, click to uncover or hide the tip, and i think they run about $5.99 for a set of two. I love them. My wife bought some swoot LED light up stylus... its a piece of crap that washes out the colors on the screen and feels really light and cheap. Denied. Thanks for the heads up.

Just tried it...it fits perfectly.

I grabbed the Hori Touch Pen Attachment a couple weeks ago and I like it a lot. The only major problem I had with it was that whenever I was playing Elite Beat Agents, the top and bottom half would come apart as it didn't snap firmly into place. Got pretty frustrated with that but I said fuck it and glued everything together and now it's working better than ever. I kindof wish that it came as one whole piece rather than three seperate pieces.

Cool video. I don't like the first one you showed, the whole put it on your finger thing. But the other ones seem cool enough.

Hey, with those first stylusses (is that a word?), the ones you put on your finger.....You reminded me of Freddy Kruger :)

Thanks for the rundown. I'll need to look for an equivalent to that click-pen stylus here. Now, when you say "three different styluses," wouldn't it be "three different styli?"

I see it's already been mentioned, but the Hori extending stylii for DS lite crack like nobody's business. They're cheap at Blockbuster Video though and they feel AWESOME. They're made with the original materials used in the standard Nintendo-made DS lite stylus too. Perfect for Elite Beat Agents. I also have their extending stylii for the old DS but these are garbage. When they are this thin, they bend too easily. With no structure, there is no point in extending them.

I'm just going to randomly endorse the death jr. stylus...not that I've used it extensively. Just on the fact that aesthetically it looks badass (it's a scythe!)

pictures later.

Wow crazy, I just got that Hori pen from Play-Asia last week. After looking around for a while at the crap that we had here in American I thought it was an excellent deal for something that did everything I wanted. I was a little disappointed with the actual attaching to the DS part of the pen. I can't seem to get mine to stay put in the little holes, but that's ok. I really got it just to alleviate the hand cramping the tiny gay ass stylus caused. Well, I'm off to play Puzzle Quest some more! Excellent video Cheapy!

You should somehow link product page through CAG, so that way you can get pizzaid by all the people that use youtube as well. Then redirect the funds towards this site of course.

I was leaning towards getting a retractable metal stylus like the second one in the review, but the Hori one looks pretty cool and 2 styli and the pen attachment for $6 seems like a good deal.

Does the Nintendo pen stylus that's available here have a regular stylus inside it or an extendable one? I almost considered that one, too, but I figured there's a pretty good chance it's not all that great.

White one got backordered too(probably Cheapy's fault too :p). Good thing I ordered it last night. I didn't expect it to ship so fast because I added the Hori screen protectors(with its estimated 1-2 weeks shipping), but they got shipped today. Yay.

How about combining the metal stylus with the touch-pen attachment from the Hori set??? WOoooooOOoooo ....

:)

I might actually think about doing that because the regular stylus sucks.

Someone asked about it in the first page of this thread, and Cheapy confirmed it fits perfectly.

Looks like I took too long to order one off of Play-Asia, hopefully YesAsia carries them.
Edit: Yes, yes they do. But they want $8.49 + shipping. I'll wait until Play-Asia gets it back in stock.

I also use this.
I'd recommend this over the Hori since the part that is actually the stylus is exactly like the small ink tube and spring that is in every clickable pen. With this, you can take out the stylus part (if you wish) and swap it into your favorite, most comfortable pen.

the set I bought at Best Buy ($10?) came in a set of two (black and white).

Cheapy, I would highly recommend the Comfort Stylus, available for $5.99 from www.comfortstylus.com. It's flexible and fairly long, so you can wrap it around your finger, and depending on how much you wrap, you change its length, so it's very versatile. So far, I really like it.

OK, I guess I'll clarify what I meant about the Hori extending stylus being cheap in the US (and why I referred to them as "stylii"):

Blockbuster Video GameRush sells them in two packs for just under $5. They absolutely WILL crack on you no matter what* but, at that price, they're practically disposable.

*the clear tube is brittle and inner part leverages against it

So, yeah: Elite Beat Agents will break them quick, but I still won't play it with anything else. What concerns me though is that the cracking problem will not go unnoticed and Hori has probably long stopped supplying them. Better buy them while you can!

Use the 2nd stylus (Hori metal extendable stylus) extensively and it's terrific. My one complaint is that it gets slippery if your hands sweat - which I've only experienced during Elite Beat Agents. The 3rd stylus (pen thing) seems like the best way to play Elite Beat Agents.

I don't own a DS, but I have to say that the quality of your video looks better with your new camera. You should take advantage of the fact that you aren't tied to your PC anymore and record some reviews and features on location at different places around Tokyo. Get a good tripod and just start recording. You can always edit it later. And work on your indoor lighting. That bright spot on your head looks more like you have a huge dent.

Anyone have a link to buy the second extendable one? I found some on PlayAsia that looks similar, but If I'm going to spend money on a stylus I want to make damn sure it's the right one >.>

I'm on Remote Desktop, so I can't check, but do you mean these? $4.99 at Blockbuster/Gamerush for a 2-pack. I feel like I'm shooting myself in the foot whenever I volunteer that because these are kinda disposable because the tube cracks with any amount of use and I may be unable to find more in the future.

Well, my pack of them is almost trashed. On one of them, the clear tube started breaking around the tip end instead of the end where the extening portion comes out and now the part that touches your screen falls right out (and flexes when you push). These are the most fragile stylii ever, but they work so damn well for Elite Beat Agents that I'm just going to keep going to Blockbuster/Gamerush and getting them as long as I can.
