I don't usually frequent this part of the board, but a few buddies of mine got into an argument about which series (as a whole) is better, and I felt that it would be a great discussion topic for those familiar.

In my opinion, I felt that Metal Slug is better by far, due to the intensity level that increases as you go through each game (obviously a coin-op technique to steal quarters, but I love it anyways). I think that Metal Slug has had more consistency as a series for quality, and even though Contra has some amazing games, Metal Slug 3 is better than all of them (individually of course). I had also played Metal Slug 7 recently (never got around to opening it until lately, and instantly I was hit with the same feelings of intensity as I was when I turned on Metal Slug for the first time.

Also, Id appreciate if this argument/discussion was kept to people familiar with both series. Thanks

i grew up on contra hell i even beat the game with my cousin during a family reunion and i know the 30 man code by heart. that said id go metal slug. its basically contra on steroids that doesnt take itself seriously. all of those ms games are very fun and ive wasted tons of money playing them in acrades and would like to see them released either in a complete package or at the very least at a fair price on psn with online mp.

to be honest i think snk had better 2d fighters too id pick kof or samurai showdown over street fighter anyday.

Contra all the way.

Contra does so much crazy shyt like riding on missiles and dinosaurs and hellicopters and shyt.

Metal Slug is a lot more ordinary, and the boss patterns arent as fun and interesting or as epic as Contra

I Always lean more toward Metal Slug. Contra is awesome and all, but there was just more charm in Metal Slug (like how eating enough food gets you fat or when you die and enemies are celebrating and laughing).

Yup.

I like Metal Slug as well, but I have such fond memories from playing Contra with friends. And I have just always enjoyed Contra more so than Metal Slug.

I vote MS. Contra is great too, but Slug games are more charming. I'll often get killed because I was checking out the soldiers animations. There are just soo many little touches to Slug games, animations that are pointless gameplay-wise, but add to the atmosphere and experience.

You can't go wrong either way imo.

I'm torn, they're both the best of the genre. But Metal Slug inches ahead just because every entry holds up so well. The first one still looks spectacular.

I picked up the Famicom version of Contra a few months ago and it is much better than the U.S. version we got. If you're a true fan of the series I highly recomend playing it. Simply put it's an enhanced version, almost like Contra 1.5

The thing that set Metal Slug ahead of Contra for me is that MS launched at around the same time Contra entered its incredibly ill-conceived "Contra with primitive polygons" stage. A stage that lasted throughout the entire 32-bit generation. Although Contra has rebounded with Shattered Soldier and Contra 4, those dark days of the late 90s still haunt me. Metal Slug has had a couple miscues (4 springs to mind although I still enjoy it) but the results were not nearly as dire as Contra : Legacy of War.

Metal Slug has it's dirty little secret too. It was so bad that it never saw a release outside Japan:

Yeah, I know about Metal Slug 3d and although I have yet to try it (probably never will barring inclusion on some future SNK super-compilation) I'll give my left nut if it isn't at least a little better than the 32 bit Contra games. Both series have their mistakes but I don't think Metal Slug shat on itself as badly.
