Really good Impact. Not a lot of great wrestling on it due to the short match times, but Daniels-Sabin and Joe-EY were short, and good, with one building up the Daniels vs. X division angle and Joe FINALLY looking strong with this new look.

Kong-Kip was short and just about perfect, with the first man vs. woman match in Impact history coming off very well since Kong (obviously) had to dominate, which makes Angelina Love look like even more of an underdog. If Kip's coming back, then I guess the chair shot was a way to protect him, but if he isn't, why not just have him get squashed without weapons? It would make Kong look even more dominant and make Love seem like an even bigger underdog.

The 3D promo was really good and made a decent case for the TNA tag titles being the most important in the world. Although I'm sure New Japan would have preferred that their belts not be on-screen while they effectively buried every other tag title in some way. The British Invasion beat down was cool, although I could have done without a camera cut after every single blow. That was just distracting. Bashir's group casually strolling by to observe the aftermath of the carnage ruled - it's a shame No Limit's gear is so cheap-looking, as they looked awesome in those suits.

The Daniels-Suicide stuff concluding made me happy, and everything DW said tonight about it ruled. I hope we get a segment or two with him going to visit Leslie Nielson to do an investigation about it. Booker-Holliday was perfectly fine, but didn't do anything to make me want to see the PPV match it was building up - unlike the Kong deal from earlier in the show.

The Jarrett-Foley stuff was excellent. Despite there being a lot of Jeff Jarrett on this show that Foley built up as being Jarrett-less in some way, I liked it. The Asylum tour reminded me of the Von Erich tour of the Sportatorium, with Jeff sharing some deeply personal memories about the building, while the Cross the Line videos for Jeff did a great job of humanizing Jarrett. Plus, they provided a bit of comedy, with Jeff in tie-dyed shorts, and then him being proud to be on a wall alongside Merle Haggard (good), Jimmy Fallon (um...), and Larry the Cable Guy (yikes). Part of the comedy there was seeing the drop-off with each successive guy they showed. And the deal with JB needing money for nude karaoke was somewhat funny, along with it being said that this happened on Tuesday, but had to be at Impact "tomorrow", which would be Wednesday, for a show that happens on Thursday and that they always treat as being live anyway. The Sting sit-down interview was his usual great work on the mic, but didn't make his career possibly ending seem like a big enough deal for my liking. Still, this was a good show in a lot of ways and it made me more excited about the PPV.

Quotes for the "Nightmare at the Asylum" edition of Impact -
Foley - For the first time ever, in no way shape or form, will Jeff Jarrett be part of Impact. (crowd boos)
Steiner - Kurt’s in Hollywood filming a movie because the Main Event Mafia’s the hottest thing going and everybody wants to cash in! In his absence, he left me in charge. (Booker and Nash glare at him)
J.B. - You?
Steiner - YEAH ME! SHUT UP AND HOLD THE MIC! Everybody knows I’m a Rogue Scholar from Michigan. Graduated hakuna matata!
J.R. - Isn’t that from Lion King?
Steiner - What? I’M THE LION! I’M THE KING OF THE JUNGLE!
Tenay - Don West, I know I can’t convince you otherwise, so here’s your chance to rant about how Daniels has been masquerading as Suicide.
DW - Well, listen to his denials. THAT JUST SAYS IT ALL! DENIAL DENIAL DENIAL! Just be out here at the same time as Suicide!
DW - THIS IS A FRAUDULENT SITUATION - DANIELS IS TRYING TO GET TWO PAYCHECKS!
Tenay - You’ve got all the answers, so what’s on Mick Foley’s MYSTERIOUS DVD!?
DW - I don’t know, but apparently, they were filming another “Day in the Life of Jeff Jarrett” thing in Nashville today. Like we haven’t had enough of that with the DVD ON SALE! He might be tired with all of the DVD stuff going on with the King of the Mountain!
Kip - When my girl calls, I come. Kong, you’ve been stretchering people out of the ring, and they’ve been my girls! Tonight, you’ve got a stretcher match, but it’s AGAINST ME! And that’s just Kippin’ it real!
Ray - The reason we left THAT OTHER COMPANY three years ago is because we were sick of wrestling the same tag teams night after night. In TNA, you got fresh teams and new teams. (the British Invasion comes in and beats them up, and then a Jeff Jarrett video plays)
Waiter - Look at the company you’re in - Merle Haggard, Jimmy Falon, GIT R DONE Larry the Cable Guy, and there’s my boy right there, Double J!
Jarrett - Good company!
Jarrett - I gotta get home - gotta be at Impact tomorrow!
J.B. - Jeff, WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!?
Jarrett - What are you doing here…(points at big NUDE KARAOKE sign)
J.B. - Um… Tuesday night, Nude Karaoke…
(after Suicide enters via their desk)Tenay - WHERE THE HELL DID HE COME FROM?!
DW - CREEPY!!
Tenay - HOW CAN YOU MAKE THAT CONCLUSION?
DW - Someone who’s watched as much tape as I have would know. Watch his moves and mannerisms.
(after Daniels comes down to save Suicide) DW - I think there’s still some confusion! I still think it’s Daniels in the Suicide costume! BUT WHO’S THIS GUY WHO’S IMPERSONATING DANIELS!?
Tenay - YOU ARE SUCH AN IDIOT AND YOU CAN NEVER ADMIT WHEN YOU’RE WRONG!
DW - Well first, let’s not rush to judgment. I think that’s the worst thing we could all do. We all did that at the OJ trial and you saw what happened there. Secondly, if it takes my own money, I’m gonna start an investigation. Christopher Daniels is covering something!
Foley - Guys, when I so go, or something to that effect, play this DVD. Keith, I loved your work in Dallas. Dave, I loved your novel, you raised some interesting points, but if you don’t do what I say, you’re gone!
(after brutally beating Jarrett in the Asylum)Foley - You learned a very important lesson, Jeffrey - sometimes, you can’t go back home…
Do you really believe that this is why they didn't appear?

From out mine ass I can give you two better reasons why they didn't appear:
  1. Turner divorced himself from the wrestling business almost ten years ago and has MANY better things to do than go meet with the tinpot billionaire about DVD commentary.
  2. Bischoff either:
    • Was pissed that Vince's revisionist view of the history of WCW didn't align closely enough with his revisionist view of WCW, or
    • $$$$$

And I'm not willing to rule out some combination of a + b for the Bisch.
Bisch already appeared on Monday Night Wars, though at the time he was an employee of WWE... I can't think he's going to go for the "integrity of history" angle NOW.

He is. This is from his Twitter

@SteelCity1981 Chose not to participate in WWE's latest revisionist history initiative for many reasons including the obvious one.

I watched the Jeff Jarrett King Of The Mountain DVD set today, great watch.. really put well together out of all of the docu's I've seen. It was cool to hear his side on the whole "screwing" McMahon over at the PPV when he was IC champ and his contract had expired.

Smackdown was pretty good tonight. I didn't catch the Jericho/Edge match, but everything else was pretty solid.

What revisionist history? You can only sugar-coat shit so much, and it still doesn't take the stink away! WCW had one good year, two tops, and while they found subtle ways to get a few of the little things right, they (Bischoff) were clueless when it came to running a big time wrestling promotion long-term.

I am a firm believer with enough money anyone can make anything successful for a brief period of time, but eventually you have to know what you're doing, and Eric Bischoff did not.

Why didn't I ever have him join the Kiss My Ass Club!
That sounds like mark talk to me.
Eh, I'm pretty much with him. Nitro got big off the nWo and bringing over guys that got big in the WWF. When that angle was ancient and bogged down with what seemed like 20+ members, no one at WCW had an answer.

That isn't to say that WCW didn't put on some compelling matches and feuds but they tended to always fizzle out in the face of something infinitely stupider. The one that springs immediately to mind is the DDP/Raven feud. It built up well, they had some good matches, and when Raven finally beat DDP for the US Title at a PPV, he jobbed to Goldberg the next night at Nitro.

WCW actually started turning profit with Bischoff before the nWo came in, so Bischoff was doing his job. Not to mention even before Hall and Nash came in Nitros ratings were head to head with Raw every week.

Based on what Bishoff stated during the Rise & Fall of ECW DVD I can completely understand why he didn't want to do a WCW DVD. He is trying to save face but I have no problem with that.

ITT why you don't get married.

Flair said his main impetus for joining ROH was trying to help his 21-year-old son Reid establish himself in the business. But those plans -- as well as a Ric Flair reality show that was being filmed -- are on hold after Reid was recently arrested for heroin possession.
Gee THANKS Flair.

I'd like to ask the writers who got over, who bought a ticket, who continued to watch, whose character grew...what the fucking point was of Borash begging for $100 outside of a nude karaoke bar.
Related to this, some fat guy on the internet from NoDq.com was asked if edge winning the belt 6 times and having short title reigns took away prestige from the belt. His answer was that he agreed with Russo in that the belt is just a prop.

This is related because I disagree with the guy, and I believe that when belts mean as less as they do in TNA you get the kind of content that you just mentioned. You simply can't screw up 2 guys feuding over a title, but when you add all of these ridiculous angles and over book it, BOOM, Sports Entertainment. Nobody should ever have to ask themselves why a certain angle is on TV or why it has to do with wrestling.

Also, the guy mentioned the times where the belt had a high importance ( which HAPPENED to be the most succesful times in wrestling ) were different. That the business has changed. Even though the X Division title USED to mean something and was hands down probably the biggest draw for TNA, the belt is just a prop. Just like it was a prop when Russo put it on himself and David Arquette ( even HE thought it was stupid ) and nobody bought tickets or watched.

Anyways, I *JUST* bought Fire Pro Returns for the PS2. What can I expect, wrestling thread?

A Dot Net reader who asked to go by the name of "Ricky Suave" (for confidentiality reasons - not to mention the name rocks) passed along the following notes regarding a recording session he participated in over the weekend in Los Angeles for the WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 video game.
I just went to a voiceover session for the new Smackdown vs. Raw game. Although I didn't see anything from the game, me and about 150 other people were recording the sound for the audience. It was real fun, and we did about eight pages of chants and stuff like that for the matches and wrestlers. I just figured I'd tell you some of the people that were cool that might end up being on the game due to some of the names we had to chant.

Listed:

Ricky Steamboat, Bruiser Brody, Evan Bourne, Vladimir Kozlov, Trish Stratus, Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, Dusty Rhodes, Christian, Jack Swagger, Kofi Kingston, Santina, Goldust, The Brian Kendrick, Primo, Carlito, Macho Man (Chant was "Let's go Macho, Let's go"), Orton, MVP, Maryse, Big Show, Matt & Jeff Hardy, John Cena, Edge, Jericho, Mike Knox, Great Khali, Ezekiel Jackson

As always, take with a grain of salt.

Firepro - A ridiculously steep learning curve but underneath is the best wrestling game ever made. Fireproclub.com can help you get started with FAQs and saves.

It's a great game, but it has a huge learning curve. You can't just mash buttons. The gameplay is about timing. The menu controls are also a bitch to get down, but they feel natural once you get used to them.

If you're playing it on PS2, I suggest you get an Action Replay or some other type of save-copying device. There are TONS of great edits on FireProClub of classic wrestlers. You can make your own, but tweaking logic and the sort can get tedious.

Overall, a great game once you adjust to it.

I grew up on Fire Pro on the Saturn and Fire Pro D on the dreamcast (which I still play). It is the greatest wrestling game ever. Not to mention tons of wrestlers available already and to make your own.

Did anyone else ever play Tecmo World Wrestling on the NES? I put in ridiculous hours on that game back in the day. The funniest part of the game is that the Northern Lights Suplex was called the Northern Right Suplex. Gotta love Engrish.

EDIT: Ha, the Suplex deal is referenced in the first paragraph of it's Wikipedia page.
Bruiser Brody in a WWE game? That's just wrong.
The assumption I made when I read that was that the names are really just the generic CAW names that you pick for the announcers, not actual wrestlers.

Like how LoW had 'Mr. Macho'.

On that note, I take ANY mention of Legends in 2010 with a grain of salt until we have confirmation on whether there's going to be a LoW2 (even with that bizarre fucking DLC for 2009).

Eh, no real interest for me. Mysterio/Jericho is the only match of interest and this feud isn't at full steam yet.

I'm with Matt Young on this one. I think I'll just wait for the results. No sense in trying to watch streams that'll be shut down every 10 minutes or so.

So did CM Punk get hospitalized after Umaga beat him or could we be seeing a cash-in tonight? Too obvious?

At this point, I want Jeff Hardy to win only to have Punk come out, cash in and turn heel in Chicago.

So Cena beat Show, eh?

Ha.

Flair and Triple H returned to side w/ Batista tonight? Well, that's a shock - but let's be real. ROH fans who thought they would see Flair in an ROH ring *wrestling* were fooling themselves more than they ever had before.

The PPV was pretty boring. Chicago crowd sucked.

The Miz was hilarious. I love when anyone makes fun of the Cubs.

Morrison/Shelton and Y2J/Mysterio were pretty good. I hope Jericho and Rey have a rematch.

Watched the stream tonight at first on justin tv, till WWE took them all down. Found another on some other website, I'm glad I did not buy this PPV. It was basically a weekly show on PPV. Y2J/Mysterio was good though.
It was basically a weekly show on PPV.
Seriously. I mean, a DQ finish to a world title match on a PPV.. what the hell?
