On May 25th, Adam Mapleson of Essex was shot in the chest after fearlessly pitting himself against two armed robbers. On-lookers on their morning commute were amazed by the bravery displayed by this man as he struggled to save the life of a female security guard, but here's the clincher; This man plays violent video games, listens to metal, and was wearing a PurePwnage clothing when it happened. Let's see what 'ol Wacko-Jacko has to say about this.

I'll be honest - I'm not much of a general "news" kind of guy. Oddly enough, reading about tragedy and injustice sort of bums me out. But in this case the image of the man who was shot grabbed my attention and made my heart fucking drop - he was wearing a Pure Pwnage hat. Immediately I re-read the headline and image caption, admittedly slightly panicked at the idea that I may have misinterpreted it and some Pure Pwnage fan had gone out and shot up a mall or something crazy that Jack Thompson would inevitably blame on my monitor humping adventures. Thankfully, the gamer in this case was the hero.

I'm no journalist, so I'm not going to tell you the story. You can read about it here or here. I'm posting about this because nowhere have I read, nor would I ever expect to read, a headline such as: "Man saves security guard, video games credited for heroics". Yet somehow if the situation were different, and Adam had instead been some ball-less metal-listening commuter-shooting robber, someone would be up this story's ass in a Nintendo-second with claims equally as absurd - I'd bet my original gold Legend of Zelda NES cartridge on it. "Completely insane fucker shoots people, video games obviously at fault...... lack of frontal lobe was not a factor, says local moron". Both perspectives are ridiculous but only one gets printed regularly, so I'm here to help balance that out. I'll save the whole "art influences" tirade for its own blog post.

Of course, video games don't actually have anything to do with what happened. It's one thing to fantasize about being a hero and another entirely to make a heroic split-second decision in real life. Adam didn't intervene because he has mad headshotting skillz in CS 1.6, or because he has good taste in music. He did what he did because of Pure Pwnage he's genuinely a good person. Adam, you pwn RL. The cast and crew of Pure Pwnage, along with our entire community, are wishing you the speediest of recoveries.

Brave Adam Mapleson, 24, was gunned down as he raced to help a terrified woman security guard.

Fellow commuters watched in horror as two gun thugs — who had held up the woman as she loaded a cashpoint machine — shot the IT consultant outside his local rail station.

Cabbie Steve Frost said: “There was blood all over the floor and all over the wall. There was lots of screaming. People panicked and started running.”

Julia Hickey, who had been heading to catch a train to work, said: “There was a young man lying in a pool of blood. He looked in a very bad way.”

Adam, shot at close range, was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

Last night he was fighting for life with parents Michael and Carolyn at his bedside.

But today, a British Transport Police spokeswoman said Adam's condition had improved.

She said: “Adam is in a comfortable and slightly improved condition.

“He has regained consciousness overnight but remains in the high dependency unit at Southend Hospital.”

The woman guard escaped shaken but unhurt — as did a male colleague who was driving the security van in Rayleigh, Essex.

The robbers — wearing scarves around their faces — fled with a security box belching red dye. Their haul is likely to be worthless.

Witnesses told how Adam tried to block the thugs’ escape.

Darren Flowers, who was working on a nearby building site, said: “I heard somebody screaming in pain and shouting for help. It was awful.”

Det Supt Michael Field — leading the hunt for the raiders — said: “The young man was attempting to stop the robbery. He was very heroic.”

Police said two shots may have been fired during the robbery shortly after 7.15am. The raiders were armed with a handgun.

They escaped in a white Ford Escort — found burnt-out less than a mile away in Eastcheap, Rayleigh.

Det Supt Field said: “These men are very dangerous. They have no regard for human life.”

Graduate Adam, who lives with his parents and has an older brother, works for the London-based Highams Group.

His MySpace website talks about his love for metal music and computer games.

A shocked childhood pal said: “You would be hard pushed to find a nicer, quieter, gentler man.”

Last night Adam’s condition was “serious but stable”.

A spokesman for security van operators Loomis said: “We hope he makes a full recovery.”

Had he not been playing video games he wouldn't have recklessly endagered his own life due to video games teaching him that he can just use an "extra life" if things go wrong.

In the end he helped the robbers get away due to his selfish and foolish act.

I'm just guessing here, but awesome story :)

Terrible/great news.

Hope Jack doesn't say anything about him. If this guy were my child and Jack said summin' about him. . . wooh. I don't know.
