Virtual Console games announced
No Base Wars or Mutant League Football yet... :bs:
LOL Base Wars. Man that game was so awesome. In fact, it's still in my closet. I loved how you could bean the other guys and blow them up if their health was low enough. You could just steal bases and kick everyone's ass.

All I have to say is: blah.

I'll admit I wasn't excited over Virtual Console, since I still have all the original consoles. I was going to wait and see.

So far it looks underwhelming and overpriced. And I hope the games are not exact copies of the originals. Many have no save functions (like Toe Jam and Earl). Others, without some sort of online functionality or Wiimote support are just unexciting. While I love classic games, there are a lot of them that just aren't that fun to play anymore.

Gunstar Heroes would have been a brilliant choice...had it not been for the recent GBA game. Am I really going to play NES Legend of Zelda while Twilight Princess is right there? Haven't most of these already been released in one compilation or another? The only thing that seems to be missing is Namco, hawking Pac Man and Dig Dug for the millionth time.

Honestly, what is Nintendo thinking? There should be at least one rare, unusual, or attention-grabbing title in that list to make everyone jump up and want to buy it. I sure don't see one.

It's pretty sad when I get more bang for my buck by finding a cheap copy of Animal Crossing.

does anyone still have the old systems? i still have the snes and n64 with a bunch of good games. some i won't even need to get on VC which will be nice. I still love plugging in the snes and playing some super punchout or contra 3...or turtles in time, yep
I'll counter with my medium dudes!

....wait....I've never used the medium dudes. I think your NES breaks if you choose the medium guys.
There's medium guys? I just called them wussy fat guys.

Wasn't the Gunstar game for the GBA a poorly-recieved semi-sequel, not the original game? So ... that would be a rare/attention-grabbing title, no?

As for overpriced ... *shrug* People seem pretty happy to pay $10 for Doom II on XBLA. Seems to be the going rate.

I also suspect that they won't be EXACT ports. Or do we really think we're going to have to start writing down 16-character passwords when Metroid comes out?

Have they said anything about upgrades to these VC games?

Like no slowdown in UN Squadron/Gunstar Heroes?
Less "fog" in N64 games?

Also does anyone have a link to the Zelda Ocarina of Time screenshots that were running on emulator w/ enhanced resolution,textures,etc...?

I think I remember reading somewhere that Wii will be using hardware/software emulation to run GCN and Virtual titles as opposed to direct hardware emulation or software emu (XBOX360 backwards comp). That means that it'll be spot-on, in terms of controls, music, graphics, pixel/polygon rendering, etc.

Emulations like Final Fantasy Anthology/Chronicles, the disc did all the effort of emulating (ps1 did not have any SNES-like mechanic) so that is why the screen didn't fit fully on TVs and the music, especially the wind effects, instead of sounding "swwisshhh" sounded something more like "vvvvrrrrrrr".

XBOX360 emulations are even worse because they use programs to "trick" the 360 hardware into emulating XBOX titles. That is why you get the more polished look of certain games like Halo 2. It's basically being forced to run on the 360 hardware. In turn, codes and calculations don't always match up.

PS2 did a great job of backwards emulating because it basically had a ps1 core in the console built on with the ps2. It is similar to what Wii will be like, at least to my knowledge.

The one thing that really hasn't been mentioned is that we still haven't seen the December Wii Virtual Console releases. The Japanese Wii release is in December so that may be why their list is more substantial then ours. I cannot understand why Japan gets cheaper Sega games then us.

Revenge against the Gaijin for not supporting the Saturn and Dreamcast.

That's a good point.

My first reaction to the list? Meh. Not terrible, but not blowing my skirt up, either. General thoughts:

- Props to the other guy in the list who was glad to see Solomon's Key. I had completely forgotten about that game until now, but I logged some serious time on it back in the day. I'll be getting it. I think this counts as a surprise title.

- SNES titles: WTF?!

- If you had to pick only one N64 game for the list (and they did), Mario 64 is the right choice. I didn't get a N64 until late in the game and actually never played this classic. I only got through a couple levels on the DS before becoming fatally frustrated with the controls.

- Sega actually kind of outshines Nintendo in this initial batch of titles.

- With 10 titles being added each month, none of this concerns me too much, as everything we want will eventually appear. Soon there will be a ridiculous selection.

I think I'm just buying the original Zelda and Mario64 because I haven't played them before. Maybe Golden Axe later on.

I believe the GC games will be running solely on the Wii's hardware without software interference (remember? "Gamecube 1.5!!1 LOLOLOLOZzzz!11"). The other titles will be software emulated. I daresay the Zelda compilation discs were tests of some of their emulators, and they've likely matured a lot since then. The software emulators, while weaker than hardware, can be tweaked for every title, and patched if things are foudn out to be broken.

I just pray that we avoid the disaster like the offically-released Sega Smash Pack for the Dreamcast. That was some of the worst emulation I've ever seen in a professionally produced product, putout by the company who made all of the original hardware and software no less! Ugh.

I found it odd that they don't have any Zelda titles coming out in America, especially with Zelda: TP at launch.

I never got to play Majora's Mask, so I was looking forward to that.

Well, there's the one that started it all. But I agree with the guy who noted that most folks will have no interest in the old school Zeldas while what is increasingly being haled as "the best Zelda game ever" is sitting there waiting to be played.

I agree somewhat with that statement, but I'm planning on purchasing the original Zelda to play when I need a break from TP.

Those fuckers could have given us Sakura Wars or one of the millions of fantastic Saturn games in the US that they, you know, didn't. Bastards......

HURRRRRRRR.

I recall somewhere that N64 games such as Mario Kart 64 would run quicker, and smoother. I think they also put the idea of improving the graphics of games on the shelf for the time being.

Damn some good stuff there

Will probably eventually get:

Sim City
Gunstar Heroes
Toe Jam and Earl
Space Harrier 2
Bonk's Adventure

TOTAL = $38

Ouch, might have to cut some of those out...
