Update 7/12:

There are going to be eight pinatas in the game, four of which were on display today that are all fan favorites; Horstachio, Fudgehog, Pretztail, and Fizzlybear. The pinatas look just as they did in Viva Pinata and with good reason. Rare shared all of the assets from the game with Krome Studios. They came on giant hard drive that, incidentally, also had some Banjo assets on it (Confirmation of more than a CG trailer for Banjo existing!).

So Viva Pinata: Party Animals is part Mario Kart clone and part Mario Party clone. The racing segments are broken up with a series of mini-games. The length of the game can be adjusted to fit your time constraints by adding or removing race and mini-game segments. After each segment, points are awarded based on what place you come in which tally up on an overall leaderboard.

The racing segments are kept simple. This game is meant for the children after all. The right trigger makes the pinata run. The A Button jumped, X used a weapon (of which you could store up to two) and the B Button can be used to do a skid move that makes cornering a bit easier. Items can be snagged and used to slow your opponents progress such as honey jars that leave a sticky trail, another power-up to boost you along, and a sunflower that appeared to do nothing at all. First place is the goal.

We also tried out a few mini-games with varying success. Again, these are all simplistic and require only a few button presses or a single button and an analog stick to perform. Belching a raft across a pond was done by chugging a soda through a rapid tap of the A button. Once you drank it, alternating buttons flashed on the screen that, when hit, would cause the pinata to shake and exhale a nice, ripe burp. Another game we played called for eating apples quickly. This was done by slamming on the A button to much and using the analog stick to rotate the core. Our favorite was a version of hot potato where you got points for holding onto an explosive without having it go off in your face. It's a classic, but it never fails.

Sounds fun so far...it has the "rotate the joystick" games like Mario Party 1 & 2 used to have...

Am I the only one excited for this one? I love party games, haven't gotten enough of Mario Parties...Loved Fuzion Frenzy, though part 2 lacked the options that made part one golden. I have high hopes for this one though, it does remind me of the classic Fuzion Frenzy on XBOX mixed in with some Mario Party goodness.

Oh yeah...this should be out by this holiday season.

I don't know...I was SO excited during the press conference I was like ZOMG NEW VP! Then I saw this...if its a cheap retail game, I'll pick it up.

I am excited for this, I like party games, and Viva Pinata even more. Though, it not being developed by Rare worries me, as all Rare games are a must by for me now, and Rare is the one that made VP so fun. I hope its still $50 when it is released, hopefully soon followed by a deal, so it will be a no brainer.

$50? I'm hoping less than that at retail, but probably for no good reason. (There's no way they release this at $60, but probably also no way at $40). My kids LOVE VP, so this is a no-brainer if it is halfway decent (will depend entirely on reviews for this one). They also love the Mario Parties, so the mix is perfect.

However, MS and Rare need to get on the ball and release some DLC for VP - and I mean *real* DLC like new Pinatas. Wasn't there talk there would be some coming?

Also, I don't want to see anyone who is looking forward to this game make snide comments about the Wii being a minigame-only machine .

I was stoked for pretty much any Pinata announcement and I then I got this.

Party game? Pass.
No Rare? Pass.

Come on Rare, where's the DLC?

Here's some gameplay clips:

Looks good enough to me even though Rare's not working on it...The Burping game to get the sail boat across the finish line looks hilarious.

Who is the audience for this game? I think they are going to confuse the casual gamer. The first game looked cute for kids but was really a sim for adults. Now any adults that liked the first game may think this is similar and be dissapointed by a mini game collection.

I dunno, my kids handled the original game just fine. My 7 year-old son nearly has every pinata and all the achievements. Sure, I had to help him with some of the more obscure romance requirements, but he could certainly control and handle it all himself. I see this game as being for him and fans of the show, though, more than the adult VP player. I just hope it is a *good* mini-game collection. I'm certainly skeptical about the whole thing, so I'm definitely waiting for reviews on this one.

I'm just glad they're not having Rare waste time on this, the minute I saw it I was like "FUUUUUUCKK!!! NO RARE DON'T DO IT!!!!", and then I was very happy when I noticed it wasn't being developed by Rare.

Viva Piñata was the best game of last year, this crap looks borring and tired as hell.

Hope the demo has a few minigames, and isn't completely limited (like the FF2 demo). Definently want to try it out, to see if it is really any good.

yeah, I checked my cousins gamer card and asked why he had a lot of points from VP and he said it was his kids playing it all the time.

I downloaded the demo (found under Bringing it Home), and I found it to be pretty fun. The mini-games were pretty good, and the demo did last a little while. Much longer than the FF2 demo, and the game seems way better than FF2 as a game. I probably won't get the game right away, but will probably jump on the first deal for it.

Thats good to hear, Im really hoping this game turns out to be pretty good and fun.

This game is horrid compared to Viva Pinata 1 (yes I do know that this isn't a sequel)

It has none of the ;) humor/Rare whimsy from Viva Pinata and the minigames just aren't fun. There was a foot race (kind of like Mario Kart), breaking pinatas (tap or hold A), racing paper boat by burping (tap a to fill the meter then a combo to burp), and a version of Hot Potato (hold it as long as you can to get coins)

That was about as much as I could take before turning it off.

Getting it now. My kids will be playing this afternoon I'm sure. I'm still not sure I'd get this at release, but we'll see... It doesn't sound like something I'd want to pay any more than $20 (in credit) for.

I'd pay $30 for this. I DL/d the demo and I really enjoyed it! It's no Mario Party (and I stalk Mario Party), but a party game on the 360 is kinda refreshing!! It was pretty fun, and didn't have any control problems with the demo (very generous demo, IMO)

I'll be picking this up, but only at a $30 or less price.

My kids had a blast with it until it FROZE. So that's a bad sign right there. I've only ever had my 360 freeze 3 or 4 times before. I didn't get a chance to play it myself yet.

What the fuck? Viva Pinata is great but it sold like shit didn't it? No offense meant to fans or the brand but what the fuck? I guess it shows Microsoft does show loyalty to struggling IPs.

Well, there is other Viva Pinata stuff including an animated show. So, overall the IP might still be successful. Only time will tell.

The show is actually kinda entertaining in a very stupid way. I watched it one morning awhile back thinking "Isn't there a game about this?". Now my nephew watches it.

And it is all about image. It is clear Nintendo has won the casual crowd. This is just another notch on MS belt for variety. You can't appeal to the casual market if you have no casual games. Not every game needs to be an FPS or racer.

I know your post is a couple months old, but Rare has gone on record saying there will be no DLC for Viva Pinata.

Tried the demo last night, it was pretty easy going against the CPU but the games were fun. Reminded me a lot of Mario Party minus the boards, I'll pick it up after the holidays since I'll be too busy with CoD4, Halo 3, Mass Effect & GHIII

Just tried the demo and I really enjoyed it. Probably alot better with other people as the CPU was pretty easy. Im not sure how long the demo is but at some point a message popped up telling me the disk was dirty/scratched and had to exit.

Yeah, definitely need to get Fergy.

Linkin, no need to cross off "selling" because I just bought one. I got a Kids Meal and then bought a second toy for $1.29.

They only had Franklin and the Sheep so far (would have liked to have just bought all 8 and not have to go back again). The toys aren't bad quality. I was a bit worried when I went in because the display just showed pictures of the super-cheap looking insides (they didn't have the toys in the display yet I guess) and I thought maybe the picture Linkin posted was a promo one or something. The "inside" toys are nothing special, but the kids will just like having the plastic figures. Just note that not only did my kids like the game, they love watching the show, so this is perfect for them.

And what is up with Paulie (the Pretztail)? He seems to have been dropped from the new season shows and doesn't have a toy - guess he really is gone.

The achievements are up for this game; exclusively at: http://pinataisland.info/viva/Party_Animals_Achievements . They were postedover 2 weeks ago, but I only randomly went on the site today. Looks like it could be rather easy for 1000/1000. Still haven't see a Fergy toy yet at BK, need to see this week's toys though; so far I have seen Cocoadile, Horstachio, Elephanilla, and Sparrowmint :(

Yeah, still looking for Fergy also. ALL I see now are the Sparrowmint and Elephanilla after getting Franklin and the Goobaa the first week. They keep telling me it is 2 per week but they've had the Sparrowmint and Elephanilla for 2 weeks solid at 3-4 different BK's I check. One store gave my kids the display versions of the Cocoadile and Horstachio, but they still want the real ones with the toys inside.

We picked up the MacaRacoon and the Fudgehog today. Just need to find the FizzlyBear, Goobaa, and the Sparrowmint. It's kind of sad because our favorites of the toys are the Goobaa and the Sparrowmint.

Plus I picked up the Viva Pinata faceplate from Kmart today for $1.40 and we're currently rocking the Viva Pinata theme.

Thanks! Hopefully the same toys are available all around the country. But, I also hope that they keep the extras from past week, so if my first thought is true, you can still get the Sparrowmint:)

Well, I went out today and they did have Fergy and the Macaraccoon, so now the kids have them all though they still want "real" versions of the Cocoadile and Horstachio. Ship, you may have missed out on the Fizzlybear and Goobaa as they were the first week. But I'm surprised you can't get the Sparrowmint. That is all I can fucking find everywhere I go. I'm sick of those bastards!

For Fergy (the Fudgehog for those who don't know the show) and the Macaraccoon they dug through the back to find them. They are probably supposed to be next week's toys. But then I bought 2 kids meals and got the Elephanilla and Sparrowmint yet again. The good thing was she just gave me the others for free ;).

What I don't get is they skipped right past the Cocoadile and Horstachio. I've been going to this particular store every 3-4 days and it has been all Sparrowmints and Elephanillas from nearly 2 weeks ago through today. And now it looks like they are going straight to the last set (the other ones I got) and skipping the Cocoadile and Horstachio. Oh well...

As for the Viva Pinata faceplate from Kmart, I got that as well several weeks back and it is now on my Elite ;). It looks a little goofy, but the kids like it. They are also using the theme. My youngest son does nothing but play Beautiful Katamari on his Viva Pinata-themed Xbox. I love it - just wish there was more of this kind of stuff on the console.

Hmmm, odd. I think it was two weeks ago from tomorrow, I went to BK, and asked for a Fudgehog,(then I described it as the "green" one, because I wasn't thinking), and the guy comes back with the Cocoadile and then brings another, that being the Horstachio. Rally hope I can get a Fudgehog tomorrow if I go, or at the least a horstachio, as now I regret not getting it before.

me too!

[quote name='buterbals']So did anyone pick the game up today? IGN Review is up, got a 5.6. Im still on the fence on whether or not to buy the game as I really enjoyed the original Viva Pinata, plus the lack of party games on the 360.

Wait, it's out already? I think I'll have to rent this for the kiddies, but no purchase till it's on clearance at Kmart for $7 ;).
