Voice communication question

So I just started up my xbox live account tonight and I'm not sure how to get the voice chat to work properly. I tried playing Gears of War and I could only occasionally hear some muffled murmuring of teammates, but it wasn't coming in loud or clear at all and I had the volume set at full blast. Is there soemthing I'm missing here, or is the voice communicating always that crappy over xbox live?

I managed to halfway solve my problem. After an hours worth of research I realized that my headset was not plugged in all the way. Hey, I've never used these things before- I didn't know it had to snap into place.

But even once I figured that out it was still fairly muffled. This may have been partially due to the fact that I was playing with Germans who live halfway across the globe and have accents, but even when I started playing with Americans it was still harder to make out than it should have been. I guess I was expecting phone quality voice communications and it wasn't up to that level. Does it perhaps make a difference how close you are to the hosts? And if so, is there a way to see where the host is located? thanks

I went from an Xbox to a 360, and noticed a HUGE drop in the quality of voice communication, especially in Halo 2. I suspect it has to do with the controller being wireless- its probably a lot easier to pump a good quality headset signal through a wire than a 2.4 Ghz wireless connection. My guess is they cut the voice bandwidth, which reduced the quality.

Those bastards, cutting our bandwith lol, I haven't used my original headset for some time. I got the Turtle Beach X2 Wireless Headset from Christmas and it freakin rocks(uses infrared instead of 2.4Ghz freq so no interferance and I can hear perfectly).
